Changing a few magnets around unfortunately won't fix our short comings but as i see it 2 changes to be made for next week. Dolan was exposed up on the wing and although he may be able to play there in time his frame doesn't allow it currently needs to be in as a small forward or not at all unfortunately.

Out: Coffield, Dolan
In : Sellwood, Harmes.

Although he won’t get dropped, Vander is a liability most of the time. He needs a rest, and I agree with Dolan who will be a good player but was totally out of his depth today, and Coffield who is too slow for afl football.

We need a big key back to play on the monster forwards and Liam needs one last hurrah if he fit to help out lobb and O’Donnell

I think we learned a few things from Adelaide tonight:

1. You can play three tall forwards if they get out of each other way - they played clear rotations that would not be complicated but kept out of each others way.

2. How important three tall defenders are - especially when one goes down

3. The rules have changed but maybe we haven’t been told?

Ins: Khamis for Hynes - I really like Hynes and think he will be a star but we need three tall forwards. And Khamis can get on a roll and kick a few but more important- he can both lead out to create space and jump in from the side. A selfless roll that Tex played.

Ins: Jones in for Coffield. We need a genuine third tall. If not then Buss. I thought Coffield was better tonight and played OK on Tex but if he can’t take interceptions marks we will get stitched up. He is a bit in between - at 191/2 he is too small and doesn’t play tall with leap but tries to use strength. He was drafted because of his speed but appears to have lost it. I think Williams is better at the role he is playing but I also reckon the structure is wrong.

Both Buss and Jones are fullbacks - yes TillT would have kicked goals on them but he did on Lobb - marking almost every time and dragged Lobb back to the square cutting out his key strength as an intercepting and long kicking CHB. He was almost AA level in that role but bog average as a FB. This also allows JOD to run and use his athletic traits. Dale, JJ and Bramble. Williams. Friejah and Red to roll back in rotations.

Ins: Harmes in for Dolan. I like Dolan too - he is a find but Harmes is just better at this stage of his career.

Hard to see us winning this up there especially Sam gets a week which he should not, open handed push cannot believe caused a punctured lung.

Possibly outs Hynes not ready, Dolan ditto, Coffield not good enough, Garcia just does not get enough of it.

Ins Jones, Harmes, Scott, Karmis

Can't argue with, makes perfect sense. Perhaps only that we can recruit the crows forwards coach who has them perfecrtly structured with good leading patterns, excellent delivery from the midfield. I think Dolan will be a player just might find the lions a bit tough and experienced, but need to get games into him. Harmes comes in if he is available.
On today's performance.... Coffield, JJ, Garcia, Poulter...meh.

What did Garcia do wrong? No turnovers, no clangers, 5 tackles, 4 centre clearances (2nd most behind Bont).
Many should go before him.

Getting sick of the VFL team having a bye every three weeks. Spots up for grabs and no one gets a chance to put their hand up

Have no idea what to do but I don't particularly like the make up of the team

Coffield really should be out. I was hopeful for him, he was great in 2020, but all the injuries seem to have taken a toll on him. Just doesn't really offer anything, doesn't have the speed or kicking abilities to be a strong rebounder, hasn't been able to defend talls or smalls, has taken a few intercept marks but none have been real notable ones. Feels like he is just playing because we want to play smaller, but he's not bringing any of the advantages of playing smaller. Who replaces him is a better question? Seems to early for Sellwood (would like him to build a body of VFL work before throwing him to the wolves), so should be a tall. Shouldn't be Gardner but who knows, they wouldn't play Busslinger when he was in form so that seems unlikely now that he hasn't been playing as well, think they just need to play Jones and hope for the best.

Harmes should also come in if fit. Thought he was solid for the first half of the season and is clearly best 18 in my view, real lack of continuity lately but if he's right to go I think he needs to come in.

Wouldn't mind seeing Khamis back in but not sure it'll happen. I thought he was solid enough and like the versality he can bring if there is any mid-game injuries. Even if the plan is to sub him in the third quarter every week, I feel like he offers something. Naughton's form turnaround essentially matches when Khamis moved out of the 22. Feel like its just a coincidence but there could be something there. Think Naughton was getting the opportunities but was just down on confidence, the turnaround seems more that he has got his hands working again rather than Buku giving him more space

Need to give Sellwood a crack. Coffield/Gardner try hard but they’re not long term solutions for us down back.

Time to see what we have in Sellwood.

I’m a massive fan of Josh Dolan but not on a wing. Think Harmes for him is an easy change given they were playing similar roles.

Agree with Moj on the Sellwood, Harmes in and Coffield, Dolan out.

Worth persisting with Garcia and Poulter can fill the sub role fine.

Some how got a 3 year deal.

Just for the next time we vs Adelaide, how in the world we meant to combat Curtin. He’s going to be so much better the next time we take them on. IMO there’s only one player on our list built for it (actually naughton probably capable but I’d rather not try) and that is Croft. We need to do what Adelaide did with Curtin and play him as a winger or at least a half back. There is no reason for him to develop as a key forward when there is no spot for him there.

In: Khamis, Harmes
Out: Poulter, Dolan/Hynes

VFL Bye is at an awful time otherwise I'd have one of Sellwood/Jones in, both need a longer run before stepping up

Harmes for someone, otherwise no change because the cupboard is bare.
Old Mother Hubbard didn’t have a cupboard as bare as ours. We keep going back there knowing full well it’s completely empty. Apart from Jacques it only contains ingredients we have tried before but found they are not up to it. I get that Hynes and Dolan need time to see if they can make the grade. Ttime for a replenishment of that cupboard at the end of the year.

The cupboard most certainly isn’t bare.

Our defensive structure appears to be stubborness at this point. The coaching staff have Liam Jones, Buku, Sellwood & Busslinger to work with. It’s up to them to come up with a plan and winning formula.

It may or may not work but they certainly have options to try. They’ve trotted out the same for the past 8 weeks with the same results.

Honestly who cares, let me tell you the script regardless of team selection.
  • Dogs dominate possession and squander many opportunities through poor disposal under pressure
  • Lions feast on our turnovers
  • we kick 10.16 and lose by 13 points
  • bevo laments a patch of footy where we didn't execute how we'd like to, but remains optimistic despite 1-8 record against top 8 sides

Cheers
