Please match committee do not turn to Gardner in round 19 when we need to settle on our best structure and lineup for the run to finals. If that is sticking with the two KPDs and improving the structure / 3rd talls around them, then fine, but we have seen that Gardner while being a great bloke and very solid VFL defender, just is not the answer to our woes at AFL level. Please I beg you...

So what would you suggest?

I took from todays presser that we'll be playing an extra KPD, the vibe I got was that it's Buss first, then Gardner with Jones third in line.

Personally if Jones is still underdone and not available for selection, I would bring in Selwood who is a big body and can intercept and play on 3rd talls. Would leave Coffield in and have Truck, Coff, Sellwood all rotating through helping the KPDs in the air and providing run the other way.

I would look to change the structure a bit to provide more support for the defenders and less situations where they are one out or battling against a fast counter attack. Part of this is not turning the ball over as much up the field, but that's an obvious for whatever structure we go with. However instead of having an extra come up to the contest as frequently, I might look to have one drop back in a sweeper role or if Brisbane get a bit of a run on, try to have a loose player back at times to gain some ascendency.

If we haven't believe 3 KPDs is the answer most of the season, I don't think it's going to be the answer this week when the only available option to bring in is Gardner. Now if Jones was fit and had some good form behind him, then he could have come in and drop off one of Sellwood or Coff from above to allow JOD / Lobb to play a bit more of an intercepting 3rd tall role.

If he picks Gardner then he deserves everything the Korn gives him.

Buss, Buku, Jones, Selwood or bust

Looks like it's going to be a bit of a wet Gabba Friday night. We haven't had too many rain affected games this year which we are normally pretty good in, so may suit us a little more as the underdog.
Friday ...

Brisbane area

Cloudy. Very high chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon. Light winds.

The weather has been fantastic for the last week ... but a Brisbane version of quite cool in the evenings

I thought his mention of experience leads more towards Gardner. He openly said Jones is under done and Buss seemed like an after thought, at least to me anyway.

Considering the way we leak goals over the top we can't have slow types like Gardner chasing tail, Hipwood will eat him alive.

Yeah each day it looks like the forecast is dropping so may not get too much rain now

Watched Bevo's pressor.

said we'll need experience and a focus on tackling, experience, and physicality and that there will be a few changes.

that rules out Buss, Hynes, and probably Dolan unless sub.

Harmes plays if he can overcome illness. i think Jones will play as well (maybe thats wishful thinking on my part as i dont want to consider the experienced alternative)

Whether we bring in Buss or Gardner or Khamis or Jones is less important than whether we fix two big things:
  • our defensive system - the current version has repeatedly been found wanting
  • tackling and pressure
In particular if we can produce swarming, suffocating tackling pressure throughout the match I have no doubt whatsoever we will win. Unfortunately very few sides can maintain that sort of pressure for 100% of a match. It's exhausting. It requires real mental focus and physical endurance, not to mention good tackling technique (which is a bit of a query for some of our players).

Of the players being talked about for omission I would be more inclined to retain Hynes because he has the aggression and physique to lay tackles and play a physical game. Against Brisbane I'd leave Dolan out of the starting 22. Harmes would be good for pressure, but not if he's still recovering from a bug.

We've had the flu rip through our family and you're down for 2 weeks, can't even comprehend playing sport in the 3rd week. Influenza is bloody everywhere at the moment.
Same here. It’s been well documented across a number of clubs that a lot of players have been struck down with the flu, but most have returned after a week. It must’ve hit Harmesy pretty hard. Poor bugger
