Preview Changes: Round 3 v Essendon

Nothing to do with changes but just on the long bombs inside 50. Forwards in particular Fritsch need to take some responsibility here and now when to lead up the kicker or try and get out the back. The only time fritta leas up was the opening minute of the game the rest of the time her tried to get it out the back.

One instance in the 3rd quarter melksham makes and handballs to Jones (poor choice to start with) but the fritta leads out the back to his left instead of leading on a 45 to allow jones to kick it to advantage. Fritta forced jones to try and impossible 55m hook kick on his left.

TMac is just as bad to.
Good points. Fritsch is never going to be a good grappler but is a good mark on the lead.

This is something Hunt actually does okay at as a forward. His first goal was from a straight lead at Rivers who just put it in front nicely. His third was from running to the back as Jackson/Fritsch lead up and Tomlinson nicely put it out the back. He seems fairly smart at getting into space as a forward but we rarely make space properly or deliver it there so it's wasted.

I can't really blame Hunt for his form drop after half time. Carlton rebounded everything every time we tried to go forward. Our backs and mids are to blame for starving our forwards of opportunities.

I think we need to give the spine a chance to gel. TMac doesn't get service, how is he supposed to do that much?

We have to be taller vs the Dons. Their backline towelled up Sydney's smaller forward line tonight. Francis is a physical match for Petracca if he rests forward; we need to occupy Hooker and Hurley.

Weideman comes in so we can get taller. We had Gawny drop behind the footy plenty vs Blues(seriously...the ****ing Carlton forward line who will collectively kick 80 goals this year generously). So I'm assuming that's back to being part of our gameplan. In that case, Jacko in the ruck; we need two actual tall forwards to crash packs. Smith is more than capable of switching down onto a Stringer/Langford/Walla if needed IMO. It appears like 7 talls, but with how versatile May/Smith are, with Gawny dropping back...it can basically act like a regular backline, Gawn and Lever being the "talls."

I'm honestly switching Viney to forward pocket, dropping Nibbler. Viney has played the same way for years. But our midfield group has outgrown tunnel vision crash and bash. Trac/Oliver/Gus may not know defensive positioning if it slapped them in the face(neither does Viney btw), but offensively those 3 + Gawn have the chance to be the best in the competition. Vines can rotate into the guts when Oliver rests, either up forward or on the bench. I would not mind seeing Tomlinson in the centre circle just to actually hold position opposition goalside of the stoppage; in these cases Milkshakes or Bennell can get onto the wing. We can also use Harmes in the guts around 30% gametime with how good Rivo looked R1.

I actually don't know what Chunk brings to the team anymore. Rivers/Salem/Lockhart all more composed downback, Chunk doesn't give you much one on one. He's cooked in the guts. He's out for mine.

My side:
Ins: Weideman, Pickett
Outs: Nibbler, Chunk

B: Nev May Smith
HB: Rivers Lever Salem
C: Langdon Oliver Tomlinson
HF: Melksham Jacko Bennell
F: Viney TMac Fritsch
R: Gawn Petracca Brayshaw
B: Weideman Harmes Pickett Hunt

Hunt is a decent kick and actually leads up at the footy, two things our forward line lacks. I want him in; one of him/Hannan is in our best 22 IMO.

If Vanders is fit, he comes in for Hunt or Bennell.

I think Tmac needs to spend some time closer to goal. Fritsch switching to play further up the ground with Melksham.

Going by this weekend games just winning was amazing. Especially after playing only none and a half quarters. We’ll give the bombers a run for their money next week.

Not opposed to bringing Weideman in and keeping Jackson. Probably need to bring Kozzy in to. ANB was ok and doesn’t deserve to be dropped but reckon he could be. Jones wasn’t great but if we have to drop two players and Jackson isn’t one then it’s possibly Jones.

IMO Weideman comes in for Jackson. Kozzy for ANB.

Nah at this stage Dees Crows Blues a pretty clear bottom 3 for mine.

Dons, Swans both organised WAY better behind the footy than we are. Actually funny; those are two solid but not great sides and they make us look elementary in terms of communication and positioning. Do way better at adjusting too when the opponent breaks a line.

We are the worst tactical side in the comp, by a fair bit. **** I hate this team sometimes. Offensively seems we are getting better but the defensive positioning is just so horrid. How long until Goody corrupts Tomlinson's positional discipline?

The Dogs, Blues and Crows are comfortably the worst in the comp for mine, with us in the bracket just above.

If we are a bottom 3 side then Goodwin has to go. I think we’re a side that’s around the top 8 to around 12.

Probably any competent coach would find a way to turn the Gawn/Petracca/Oliver/Gus combo into at least one flag.
We have the key cogs in the machine. Goodwin contracted until 2022. In the current environment probably not going to see too many coaches paid out. But I he can’t get us going Consistently by next year get Ross Lyon in. I guarantee he’d get us to be a Contender.

Ridiculous how our best 22 likely doesn't have Lockhart Chunk Hannan Weed Nibbler Hore. All could do a role off the bench for a finals team.

Sparrow could get a game for a few undersized mid groups too IMO, like maybe Carlton/Dons. OMac we shit on but he honestly is not that bad, Aliir Aliir still plays games off the back off two separate stretches in 2016 and 2018 where he wore invisible gloves and clunked some marks despite having no positional nous.

The list is honestly pretty solid IMO. KK might be done, Hibbo too Josh Wagner... less said the better(Rivers a much needed pick but we need one more solid general defender in the Luke Ryan mould). Not sure what Kyle Dunkley brings at AFL level. Jordon we haven't seen much of.

But far out, given we were getting genuinely reliable footy from Bugg and Pedo in 2017; IMO we've got around 30-35 guys who are AFL calibre based on their skills and athleticism. We just clearly don't know basic defensive principles.

Dogs will make it work. Bevo usually does some weird stuff in the first half of the season where they start slow.

If we're in the bracket above we are right at the bottom of it. A prerequisite of playing in the AFL should be knowing that 4 guys don't fly at one footy to let the opponent crumb it out the back without resistance. If you gave Longmire this team he'd be challenging for the flag; as in any coach that preaches basic defensive structure.

Enter Ross Lyon. He’ll have us arranged defensively.

The defensive structure is really annoying. Especially when everyone says lever and May are very good organisers. Everyone wants to fly for the ball.

Lever was actually pointing last year and filling the hole behind defensive contests.

That should be Nev or Salem honestly; we need Lever in the air.

But I think Lever is a pretty solid leader. Obviously all of this means squat if we've got the same defensive structural woes in 10 weeks

Well in defence of may generally he was holding his opponent down waiting for someone to come over the top. Problem is it seems like we've told everyone to back themselves rather than having a designated 3rd man in. That one in the last when Lever and Smith both missed the ball was classic Melbourne.

I think that's pretty clearly Smith's fault. Hopefully that's something ironed out in a few weeks.

Lever knows when to go for the grab and when to spoil generally.
