posted this before but for some reason it did not compute.
our smalls.
king edwards white foley houli nahas and helbig.that is assuming everyone would consider these players our smalls who are getting a game atm.

13 games between them this yr. averaging just 12 possesions each and just 7 goals between them.

of those possesions far too many are ordinary or used unwisely. only two are reliable kicks. so we are in the main playing a heap of smalls who lack quality and dont get much of the ball. as a collective group they are very poor.
bloody hell betts would have kicked more goals by himself than the lot of em combined.
i always thought the bulk of your smalls were supposed to be skillfull smart quick and genuine accumulators of the ball.

how many negating small forwards do we need especially when a case can be made you dont need any.

the difference between us and the two teams we have played they have small forwards who kick goals. in the main they dont have small mids.and those small mids they do have win plenty of ball regularly.the difference between our smalls and other teams smalls is stark.
murphy at 180cm must average 25 plus possesions week in week out scotland curnow and simpson at 182cm against us collected a lazy 24 24 and 28 possesions. their two small forwards betts and garlett kicked 5 goals against us despite garlett being well held. eddie found the ball a lazy 17 times compare what carltons smalls gave them to us.

look at the saints game their two smalls yep just two genuine smalls milne kicked 4 and should have kicked 8 and had 24 possesions geez i can just see the raptures on here if we had a small player capable of that.steve baker had a poor one but usually has a tag job interestingly unlike us they only have one small run with player or tagger.
some will say clint jones but hes a medium and is an accumulator he often has possesion counts around 20. jones with armitage both 183cm were the next smallest stkilda players jones played just one quarter and armitage was the third highest accumulator on the park.

the last few yrs this has been a common theme, i know some will say possesions mean jack shit and in many circumstances i would agree. but for me as stated we dont get enough of the ball. we dont use it well and we lack quality. this si especially true with our smalls.
as a collective group playing all of them together we exacerbate an existing problem.
simply put we just cant afford to play all of them at the same time because it puts enormous pressure on others.

for me king forward houli and foley as mids and helbig for experience. thats it. we want a tagger use jackson. want wingmen use anyone who can kick well make good decisions and get a bit of ball. straight away that excludes nahas and white and a few others on the list.

anyway just a few observations i have no doubt there will be those who take it to heart and jump up and down.

to me there is a very strong case to include tuck ball winning or getting enough of it has been a problem in the opening two games.another is finding goal kickers and getting a good spread from our forwards.
i will give king his due while getting very little of the ball at least he snagged a couple of goalls.

Foley seemed to struggle to have an impact on the weekend. He'll be a massive boost when he's back to his best. Just lacking a bit of match fitness at the moment or out of touch from being out of the game for so long?

Santa you make a valid point re the effectiveness of our smalls In particular titch and nahas
Dimma will give them and houli another week to prove themselves before swinging the axe

Axel will be much better against the hawks which will be a fair effort given he hasn't played much footy in 18months

As for tucky I feel for him He is an honest contributor who goes in hard every game and gets the job done I like tucky and would like to see him as a forward option but you get the feeling his days are numbered simply because of his age

I think you are spot on Santa. Have been thinking about this for a while and am pretty sure that it is no accident that we don't have any small forwards of quality. I think FJ and CC have been targeting other positions in recruiting and will now look to get in some silk in the next couple of drafts. Similar to Hawthorn when they drafted Cyril in the year prior to their premiership.

Looking at our list we have McDonald, Nason and Hicks coming through. All better footskills than most mentioned above but still wouldn't be surprised if we used a first round or the Tambling compo pick on a classy small forward/half forward in the next 1 to 2 years.

edwards will be on notice to pull his finger out before a spell in the ressies, only a few valuable contributions late in the game has saved him this week for mine.

thursty for mcguane
and Id love to see grimesy for astbury, the big fella is struggling BIG time. does not know when to hold and when to fold right now...go back to ressies for at least a fortnight for a decent dose of leather poisoning and shot of confidence

In:
Thursfield (has the experience),
Grimes (in form, needs the experience),
Nason (forgotten? had a good game),
Webberley (in superb form),
Miller (kicked 3 goals for the burgers, could add to our 'unpredictability', otherwise I don't know why we drafted him.)

Out:
McGuane (susp.),
Edwards (has had two poor games)

B: Grimes Thursfield Conca (although I'd like to see him tried up the field)
HB: Newman Astbury White
C: Deledio Martin Grigg
HF: Cotchin Vickery Nahas
F: Morton Riewoldt King
R: Graham Jackson Foley

Int(from): Batchelor, Helbig, Houli, Connors, Nason, Webberley, Miller

Deledio to play on Mitchell/Hodge
White to play on Burgoyne
Thursfield on Roughead
Grimes/Astbury on Franklin (the other will float in defence unless Hawthorn play two rucks which ATM is unlikely.)

Bring it on. We won't be easy beats. I thought we'd beat the sainters, before the game even started, and again I BELIEVE!!!

Out:
Houli - our most ineffective player in the last 2 games .Give him a spell to try and regain some touch, hunger, whatever
Edwards - not quite as bad as houli, but because of needs and form of Webberly and Tuck give him a spell
McGuane - suspended

In:
Grimes - one of the best last week, due a stint in seniors as reward for effort, and due to requirements
Miller - has played as a KPD previously was handy last week. We need some experinced strong bodies down back so we don't too easily overrun by the hawk fwd line
Webberly or Tuck - both have been good over the last two weeks. Would maybe give it to Tuck because of his flexibilty re positioning, and would provide a much better rotation for cotch, martin, foley, grigg, etc

My 2 cents worth.

Gourdis and Thurst in one of which will be a sub.
Webberley's game last week demands a call up.
Tipping titch is in for a holiday in the 2s as well, purely to get leather poisoning and find the touch again. ;)

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but there is a Coburg match report on the RFC website with stat's from each RFC listed player on the weekend.

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/6301/newsid/110912/default.aspx

Will Thursfield (5 kicks, 6 handballs, 6 marks)
Was solid in defence, with nine spoils and 10 team defensive involvements. Provided good support to a young backline and used the ball well offensively.

Shane Tuck (11 kicks, 12 handballs, 4 marks)
Was very good at stoppages with his strong bodywork. Impressive work-rate throughout (had 10 tackles), showed good leadership in the tight last quarter, and certainly had an impact on the game.

Ben Nason (10 kicks, 7 handballs, 4 marks)
Started impressively, kicking two goals in the first quarter. Finished the game with a total of 17 possessions and used the ball efficiently.

David Gourdis (12 kicks, 4 handballs, 6 marks)
Played deep in defence and did a solid job in denying the opposition for the majority of the match. Got involved in offensive chains and provided run out of the backline.

Jayden Post (8 kicks, 5 handballs, 5 marks)
Was used forward and in the ruck throughout the game. Had an impact in the last quarter, taking a strong mark and setting up a couple of goals.

Matt Dea (9 kicks, 13 handballs, 6 marks)
Played a more attacking role in defence. Accumulated 22 possessions, with seven handball receives, and was involved in several offensive chains. Looked strong around contests.

Jeromey Webberley (17 kicks, 5 handballs, 7 marks)
Very good performance. Used the many possessions he gathered to the team’s advantage. Worked hard right throughout the game, running and linking up. One of the team’s best on the day

Dylan Grimes (7 kicks, 4 handballs, 3 marks)
Had another strong defensive game. Also provided good spread and attack from the backline.

Pat Contin (12 kicks, 6 handballs, 9 marks)
Started the game slowly, but had a significant impact in the final term, kicking two goals and setting up some others.

Goals - Coburg: Carnell 4, Nason 3, Miller 3, Tuck 2, Contin 2, Lawton, Post.

Best - Coburg: Webberley, Grimes, Tanner, Tuck, Nason, Carnell.

To be honest I can't see us going with just 2 KPDs on Saturday. Astbury will play and Thursty will come in for McGuane but Grimes or Gourdis has to come in too. Buddy and Roughead command probably 3 between them anyway, but then there's Hale and Renouf who will both spend plenty of time forward. Given the defenders we have out, we'd be silly to think Clarko won't try to stretch us. And I can't think of anyone else in the 22 at the moment who can go back and play on a key forward. Lids just isn't quite up to it, neither is Newy or Jackson.

I don't think Edwards WILL be dropped, but I think he SHOULD be, for Grimes.

How about we just make the one change and make them worry about the match ups? In- Thursty Merc, Out- McSwan. If they play 3 talls (hale, roughy, buddy) deep forward, without cyril i think they will struggle to keep the ball in their forward line.
Astbury takes the big role on Franklin (show confidence in the kid), Thursty takes roughead or Hale when he pushes forward. Big risk because it may require Batchelor to play on roughy when all 3 of them are down there.

Use Delids on Franklin when he goes to the wing (he played a fair stint there v melbourne)

Nahas deserves his place. was one of best performers in the pre-season and is, along with matty white, one of few on the list that can break the lines and take the game on. Dont bash him because of one bad game.

If Dimma does want the 3 Key Posi Defenders then grimes has to come in for edwards. Edwards may have been our most improved last season but his foot skills and decision making have let him down thus far. Crucial turnovers. He will bounce back though

I dont want to see too many changes

By the way Tuck may help us out in the short term but he isnt going to be much value in the long term so i would much prefer to get games into just about anyone else under 23 on the list.

Houli has been A LOT better than Edwards this year. I'm surprised people are calling for him to be dropped.

Interesting those going for the Goo, as he was very ordinary on the weekend. Disposal was sub standard.

I fully agree bazzar and thursty wasn't much better but at least he has more experience.

Houli has been A LOT better than Edwards this year. I'm surprised people are calling for him to be dropped.

First half of last week Edwards was ordinary, but in the second half he showed enough flair and effort to warrant another go.

IMO, Houli just looked like another Jordan McMahon on the weekend.. just ran the lines... that's about it. Perhaps i'm being harsh??
