McGovern was poor tonight prior to injury. Was at game Mackay played alot better than people give credit for. TV only shows the ball carrier, you don't see the players that work hard to provide an option that aren't always used. In the first week the VIC commentators thought Mackay was very good, and watch last week were they also sang his praise on the TV broadcast. Footballers who understand the game unlike most on here

God you post some shit about Mackay. And back to the, "if you don't think Mackay is good, you didn't play footy". You're really quite attractive, aren't you.

MOD EDIT: personal abuse is something you should do in the privacy of your own home, not on this forum

What? A brave Essendon player coming back from an unjustified forced year off. Gill would already have provided match revie with their finding.
Inconclusive footage, careless contact to the body, low impact. $1000

Nearly responded to the Gov v Otto speed statement, but I've realised this is just dry humour. Noboy who actually watches our games could possibly think that. I bet you reeled a few others in though.

LOL.

The actual impact of Otten being slightly slower is MASSIVELY overrated on this board.

Gov is a slightly faster. Otten is clearly smarter. Otten would get to every contest that a third tall needs to get to.

Otten would struggle to replace Lynch adequately. He would have no problem replacing McGovern, and would do it better than Menzel as he has much more impact in the air than Menzel, which is McGovern's ACTUAL strength.

Has our performance this year not showed you how important speed is?

Not commenting on smartness, better lookedness or any other comparison. Just mentioned your ridiculous assertion about their relative speed. Nice to see some backtracking though, at least you're aware how dumb that statement was.

Otten's the best kick for goal in the team other than Betts.

He's also one of the smartest players we have.

Don't have a problem with throwing him back but you'd wanna have a ******* good reason to take him out of the forward line right now.
Can you fit JJ, Gov, Tex, Otten, Lynch in the one forward line?

I'm not sure if he's better looking.

My comment was "you're kidding yourself if you think the Gov is MASSIVELY faster than Otten."

There is absolutely nothing about that statement I need to backtrack.

You obviously feel Mcgovern is MASSIVELY faster. How much is massive? Is he getting to contests that Otten isn't getting to?

And he still might be I might add. If he gets an injury free run he's still young enough to have a great career.

I really rated Otten's game, I love his comeback story and his current form is great.

But does playing him alongside our fully fit defence and forward line (Talia, Hartigan, Lever, Kelly/Cheney + Walker, Jenkins, Lynch, McGovern) make us too slow at whatever end of the ground he plays at? Is he truly a best 22 player?

We haven't had this problem yet. So far, Otten has filled in for one of our defenders or forwards in every match

What a feel good story would it be if he plays in a premiership with us?
If we get there, he more than most deserves it. Thommo probably tops the list but it looks like he's just along for the ride.

Handy problem to have.

Its a worry. The kid oozes class but it is the kids that can take a hit that win the flags and we cant afford any more soft ***** with skill in the side and it isnt fair in Rory.

At this stage if we are looking for a spot for Brouch, Mileras is the one.
Dmac at least puts his body on the line, as feeble as that may look at times.
I agree, with Milera, Rat and at times Smith or Brown squibbing it we cant carry anymore.

The only thing I thought we were short in last night was mongrel. That's a big reason I like Hampton, Sloane, Brad Crouch and CC. All can play inside and out, but tackle manically.

I recall Milera laying a good bump this year and ironing out Hopper in 2016. So not sure he is afraid of contact per~say (The Rat I can't remember hitting anyone hard), but he may be uncomfortable opening himself up to tackle or get the pill. I. E. He needs to fully brace for impact.

We really need to try get that out if him

Another interesting week at selection, although I suspect we'll go with a minimalist approach again. The easy selection will be if Jenkins doesn't get up, to simply go with Menzel for McGovern, if Jenkins gets up I suspect we'll go with him for McGovern, the questions becomes can Otten adequately fill McGoverns spot? I suspect that's the way we'll go.

Milera certainly hasn't been up to it the last week or so, but at present I'm seeing similarities to last year with Atkins where he was useless the first 3-4 games, but Pyke stuck with him and he blossomed about 4-5 games in. I think I'd give him 1 more game before dropping him to pick up some confidence and touch. Trouble is we've had 3x massive, hard fought games against tough opposition, pretty tough as a young outside mid in those games and at times he's looked overwhelmed. Tough part is the easier games are to come where he likely could build some confidence.

Mackay once again back to his usual tricks, apart from the superb goal, was largely unsighted, I suspect he'll get another game, but any more games like that and he should be out of there.

Kelly for mine stays until Cheney, or someone else presses for that medium defensive role.

So really I expect:
Out: McGovern
In: Jenkins/Menzel

What do people think about giving Milera a challenge next week. Pick one of the young Essendon mids that is about the right size for him and say 'right... you're going to lock him down and take him out of the game, then you're going to run off him the other way every chance you get'

Just let him play a 1 on 1 contest in the midfield.
