Changes Round 4 vs Bombers

In: Jones or Dolan
Out: Hynes

I’m on record as not a fan of having both Sanders and Hynes in our forward line, they’re far too samey and we don’t need two of them. Sanders is well ahead at the moment. Hynes needs to figure out how to impact in that role.

I didn’t watch the VFL, but these two seemed to put up good numbers and received positive comments in the GDT. I think either will be a valuable point of difference to what we currently have up forward.

I think we need to give Jones an extended run of games and would have played him against Adelaide

Obviously played a lot when he first came in in 2023 and while he was promising with his pressure work he really was a net zero offensively. Think he has clearly improved that part of his game and is more rounded now but hasn't had much luck with his body in the years since

Had an awesome preseason and was super unlucky with the concussion. Would like for him to get a month or so to see what we've got with him because I really think he could be the perfect complimentary role player as a small forward. Change would probably be for Hynes

He’s very strong aerially as well for his size and leads hard. I definitely don’t think he’s just a crumbing small forward and would definitely prefer him to Hynes at the moment.

I’d be curious to see how the team looks with Dolan and jones in over Hynes and Davidson just for their pace especially at marvel, but not sure defensively if 2 lighter players are what the coaches want.

So perhaps just jones for Hynes

Hynes deserves to be dropped on this clip alone.

Given the context of the moment, Adelaide had built some momentum and to try a miracle pass to Jacques at CHF with 5 Crows around him just shows a lack of composure. Just needlessly handed them a goal after winning a free kick that should have been a pressure release.

Read my mind. Was screaming at the TV after that. Was a Billy Gowers like brain fade given the context of the game

Hynes and Davidson didn't contribute much defensively anyway.

Davidson‘s mix of height, speed and endurance is pretty useful for a utility. I wouldn’t be quick to discard the options he gives us during a game.

He lead our team for distance at speed (tied), number of sprints and repeat sprints on Friday night. I prefer getting that out of Davidson to Vandermeer at half forward.

Separately, Freijah was the other that lead our team in distance at speed, but also total distance covered. So many strings to his bow for a 20 year old. He’s like a goal kicking Finn Callaghan.

Hopefully if Davidson keeps his spot he spends more time on the wing. His attributes are much more useful there.

I think Hynes goes out for Arty. I would keep Croft in but he did very little could get a confidence builder against the bomber It was good to get the win with Darcy, West and Croft quiet. Shows we have room for improvement.

He did when Williams went back into the defensive rotation when JOD was off for 20 mins.

And there lies the value of Davidson - a utility whose running and size matters in the 2nd halves of close games.

He's not going to be the cleanest player in the first 5 mins of games where everyone from both teams are fresh and playing in their optimal positions before tactics, fatigue and rotations set in.

But in the last quarter of games, where coaches from both teams are making adjustments, fatigue and injury are impacting games - you can place the extremely great endurance runner and utility Davidson wherever on the wing or forward line (matching the other coach's tactical moves) and know he'll beat them to the contest in time on in the last quarter. He certainly did when he kicked that last quarter go vs Brisbane.

I'd rather just keep him on the wing. There are enough players on the team that can be shuffled around.

I have not seen anything in the first 3 rounds that would justify Cooper Hynes keeping his position for round 4. We have too many blokes who would provide more playing seconds for Footscray, starting with Treloar, Artie and Dolan.
Hynes is big and has used his size to stand up in physical contests. I get that his form is poor and we might drop him for someone smaller, but it is actually a bit tactical shift if we replace him with a genuine small forward rather than Hynes who has done a job using his big body at stoppages when (e.g.) Kennedy has had a short rest and we need another player to have similar size there.
