Changes Round 5 vs Hawks

The only thing people might not be really factoring in for the ruck position is the around the ground defending and running that we require our ruck to do. For that reason I think Bevo will lean on Lobb to play ruck as he has the tank to be able to push forward and back hard to help out the defenders, and give an option up the ground. I don't think Smith is able to yet and also missed a big chunk of the pre-season, so probably not fully there tank wise yet after only 2 VFL games.

Emmett he may trust to split the running with Croft, but a huge ask from a first year tall. Bevo may go with an extra tall and have Lobb ruck with Emmett and Croft splitting that third tall / backup ruck role on 50-60% game time each. Gives us flexible to push Lobb back if needed and then sit Buss if it's not working or sit Croft if not playing well and go with Emmett in his role. But might just be one tall too many, even with the 23rd man role available.

I trust in Buss to come in and hold down the fort down back with JOD and Buku, he showed some decent signs last season and has been solid at VFL level so far.

My changes:

In - Buss, Hynes, Emmett (if not too many talls) or maybe Gags for another runner

Out - English, McNeil, Arty

The injuries suck, and it's a real downer, but good news is that so far they appear on the minor end so could be back within the month. And it's a great test for our depth and to see what guys like Hynes, Buss, Emmett etc have.

If they are 4 weeks they would miss this big block.

4 - 4 and we are scrapping. Need to win 2 somehow.

One person who could absolutely do the running part of the role is Croft, and I wouldn’t put it past Bevo to throw caution to the wind and just play him in the ruck and let Darcy et al relieve.

It’s not what I’d do, but when it comes to the ruck Bevo pretty much never does what we would.

" Tendon behind the knee" is that PCL? Hmm...I guess we'll find out midweek
PCL is a ligament not a tendon. Could be a distal hamstring tendon, proximal gastrocnemius tendon, or maybe popliteus tendon.

Smith spent more time in the back pocket than in the ruck yesterday. I’d be amazed if they went that way, especially given the way Emmett went (I’ve been amazed before though). I imagine it will be Emmett with a mix of Lobb, Darcy, & Croft rucking as well.

Buss wasn’t great from my view yesterday, the whole backline seemed to struggle.

Even IF we lose, will still be 2nd with only Swans or Suns able to realistically leapfrog us (maybe also Freo with a big win).

Getting beaten in the ruck is less impactful than getting beaten at KPD. Keep Lobb in defence and keep our continuity at each end.

Smith or Emmett in for English
Hynes in for Jones

Darcy can spend a bit more time in the ruck if needed.
Brett Goodes as an SSP on Tuesday, lining up for the first centre bounce on Saturday.

Wow there is a lot a negative comments on our team injuries.
We are top of the table with the best player in the comp, our defence structure has been the best it has been for years, and we are playing almost half our team with under 50 games.
So much to be positive about.

Ed is a massive out for me along with Libba.
However The Bont, MKennedy and Colonel are excellent as the 1st midfield rotation 105 possessions on the weekend. Fridge, westy and Cooper coming in as the 2nd midfield group.

Timmy is a loss, but the dogs are only equal 7th with the Crows for Hit outs to advantage, and 10th in Hit outs to 1st possession.
Against Meek, LSmith might be an option only due to his physicality, but restrictions on rucking in the middle of the ground due to his limited cardio and experience. 2nd ruck is Croft, with expanded ruck duties in the fwd line.
Lobb to ruck down back.

Im gutted that Artys body has let him down again, just an electrifying player. He's best 22 if his body holds up.

Out Ed, Timmy, Arty
In Hynes, LSmith, Billings or CCP( reward for VFL form)

Is Billings and CCP on our list? I didn't think they were

Yeah he is a known great runner with a big tank, but his low game time so far makes me think Bevo won't be super keen to elevate him to the running and physicality required to be a #1 ruck so soon. But we shall see, each option comes with a clear negative so no easy answer.

Our options are either go with Smith, who is our VFL 1st ruck, or some version of rucking by committee.

I don't think Bevo will be "set" in deciding who any of Emmett, Darcy, Croft or Lobb will do the most rucking before the game, should he decide on Smith not playing. It's likely he'll just adjust during the game itself depending on how the game evolves, what risks we can take tactically, and how well each of the four of them are evolving.

Of course someone will have to do e.g. The warm ups as the nomial first ruck, but I think Bevo will be more than happy to make a change if they clearlu lose the first 3 centre bounces or whatever.

Out: Arty. English
In: Hynes, Emmett

Emmett to share ruck duties with Lobb, Darcy and Croft. Can also see us bringing in Buss in place of McNeil to free up Lobb more
