Changes Round 5 vs Hawks

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Gather Round is just a neutral game

Home and away team is just to figure out which jumpers teams wear and which change rooms they enter. In the past it was just a coin toss to decide

It's not a big deal and it has happened in the past
Thanks for that information.
Being a lifelong Dogs supporter I am pre-programmed to a default position of “ the AFL is trying to screw us out of a home game”. I expected us to be drawn against either Crows or Port so getting Hawks threw me completely.

Those are the teams who probably have a fair gripe. The ones who just suddenly get a 12th away game

Even then it's probably overstated. Just because you get drawn away to an Adelaide team it doesn't mean you can't beat them

Don't think we've ever worn white (or red) against Hawks.

And if our wearing of blue, rather than white against Adelaide earlier this year (where we've worn the white, ironically, in all of our losses against them over there between the two times we wore blue between 2010 and this year), is any suggestion, we're not that keen on the white clash anyway as we have been since 2010.

Correct, we've never worn an away jumper against the Hawks, 2 out of the last 3 times we've played them, they've worn variants of their heritage (pre-1950) jumper, and even though they were our home games, I can't recall the topic of a jumper clash coming up.

I actually think Croft can break even enough in the ruck to do 50%ish of the time and not mess up Darcy or Lobb too much (they should still do a few stints). His endurance should see him contribute around the ground a bit too. If so Emmett into fill Crofts normal roll could make sense.

well I think our midfield should be able to cope without english's hitouts since English himself was never that dominant till this year. So if who ever replaces him can cover the marking around the ground then we should still somewhat be competitive. Also big test for Sanders and Freijah.

This is my thinking, the past 3 times we have played them the ruck/midfield mix just hasn't worked so will be interesting to see what we can serve up. The Hawks are way too good defensively to try break down with chip passing so clearance will be so important.

Having watched the VFL game and the first VFL game there are significant flaws in your statements.

Firstly Emmett played as a forward and back up ruck as demonstrated by his 3 goals one and the majority of his marks in the fwd line.

Smith played mainly in the ruck and was in the backline more early as this is where most of the ruck contests were.

Smith had 3 times the hit outs to Emmett and 4 times Hit outs to advantage.

Smith can handle the physicality of Meek.

Emmett should be in for Croft as he is playing that role better but first ruck is either Lobb or Smith and given the Hawks forward line the last area of the ground I would be weaking is the Backline
Yeah but Smith is a plodder and there is zero chance we pull Lobb out of a blackline structure that is playing well and that he is generally the lynch pin of, in order to play 50%+ time in ruck.

I didnt think Tim was dominant, the dogs are currently equal 7th with the Crows for Hit outs to advantage, and 10th in Hit outs to 1st possession.
Lachy or Emmett just have to provide a contest.

The Bont, MKennedy and Colonel are excellent as the 1st midfield rotation, racking up 105 possessions on the weekend.
Fridge and West will have to step up as the relief midfielders.

Chol absolutely shredding Gardner last year still gives me chills. Also of note Sam Darcy didn't play last year.
One of those four Chol goals was from McNeil kicking 40m backwards to Gardner inside D50

That's still my biggest WTF moment in nearly 30 years of watching footy :$

Whoever the selection panel agrees on really only needs to break 50/50 on taps. We still have Bont, Freijah, Davidson, Sanders and Kennedy. All can break a game open on their day. With that crew I still believe we have a more potent middle than the Hawks on paper. Plus, if Darcy and Naughton have a good first half. West can rotate into the square to add a bit of mongrel if needed.

Less than 48 until teans come out, you wait ages for a game then two come along in quick succession..

Another example of shit fixturing, the Hawks had an 18 day break then have a 5 day turnaround. We have a 16 day break & 6 day turnaround. Not ideal for either team.

16 days off followed by three 6 day breaks in a row.

So club initially announced Libba to miss 1-2 games.

Now have him listed as 2-3 weeks.

No timeframe for Ed or Tim yet

Also treloar not on the injury list.

Club is terrible with injury transparency
You do realize that injuries are re-assessed weekly? And set backs, plus slower than expected improvement, can cause injury time frames to increase from the original. I had a "one weeker" injury, that ended up being a month, despite following correct recovery procedures. It happens.

Also they only got scans done yesterday, they then have to see specialists, and plan out a road map across the next few days before they can release a time frame.

Doesn't happen the moment they see the scan and be "right, that's definitely 5 weeks". Those who do the scans just identify the issue, then forward it to specialists later on, who check it themselves to see the full nature of it, then engage with the club, and sometimes other specialists. It's a process that takes days. Perhaps weeks if you're just a regular person like everyone on here.

Have no issue with how the club handles it, fans are a little to harsh and expect answers instantly and 100% accuracy. We are better than certain clubs that's for sure.

Hawks are great value at $1.61. They should be bigger favourites than that. They seem to beat us every year regardless of whether we have injuries or not. If we keep it under 40 points that'll be a win imo given our outs.

If we do beat them. It will be by far our best win in years tbh. Missing a bunch of starting caliber players, vs a team considered one of the 2 or 3 favorites for the flag.

Hawks were still $2 on Monday morning despite everyone except Ed being a certainty to miss this week.

Your opinion he is a plodder does not make it a fact.

Far from a plodder at VFL level.

Biography from AFL .com from last season

Biography

Another fantastic season of growth for the bullocking ruckman and an AFL debut shouldn’t be too far away. Played all 21 matches for Footscray and lifted his averages to 14.4 disposals, 33.9 hit-outs, 4.7 clearances and 4.6 tackles and put in a terrific shift in the VFL Grand Final to contribute 15 touches, 35 hit-outs and seven clearances. Ran riot in the qualifying final against Frankston with 22 possessions (16 contested), four marks, 39 hit-outs, seven clearances, six entries and a goal. Only signed a one-year contract but looks the goods.

They should be slight favourites but if we win it won’t be the Eagles beating us from a few years ago.

Hawks board are confident Meek & Reeves will destroy whatever we put in front of them. And that Nash will mostly tag Bont out of the game .
