Changes Round 5

Every report I have read and have been told by people attending the game all from different forums have been saying the same thing about, except for maybe the odd person wearing the rose colour glasses.

He got out marked in 1 on 1 situations by Thornton on maybe 4-5 different occasions, and I'm not talking about lead marking but standing under the ball side by side and not being able to punch it away.

On the other hand Post who was having a very good day by all reports marking everything that came his way including a speccy, had to be shifted into the backline and Gourdis had to be moved forward to stop the bleeding.

Gourdis also shanked a couple of easy kicks out on the full, so I cant see him getting a call up yet.
so you actually havent seen the game for yourself then.
seems there are many conflicting reports on jusy how well or poorly he went.

Wasn't anyone else impressed with Thursfield? I thought he did his job on Dawes, and beat him on numerous one on one's

However Moore, McGuane, Rance need to come in...

No, but I got the information from 3 different websites and each report basically said the same thing about Gourdis.

He might be one dimensional but he gets the job done and is a smart player who finds space and provides an option for our defenders looking for an out and he does not make mistakes. As for him being one sided, maybe, but its better then being no sided. I mean are you suggesting you have seen Titch ever use the left peg? He cant use the right ATM FFS.

Our downfall has been the first link out from defence. More often than not, the mistake is made just outside our defensive 50, automatic pressure cooker stuff. We need a safe cool head to make one of those links safer , with minimal errors. Webberley to me is the man for that. He runs to the right spots that offer an easy out for us coming out from defence. ;)

I tend to agree with you here Cogga. I was watching the Pies game again last night and when we were coming at Collingwood, Edwards made at least 3 poor mistakes that directly affected our chances of getting closer. 2 out of bounds on the full under not much pressure and a poor handball or other kick (can't remember now) that I thought really wasn't good enough. He was getting to the right spots but those errors made me think of DH's demand for recruiting. We only want guys who can use the ball well. Right now, Titch isn't doing this and someone else should get a crack.

Edwards - Dea (Edwards was mortifyingly putrid and Dea has had consecutive solid efforts at the burgers, can match-up on the smalls and could free up Deledio)

Astbury - McGuane (Astbury is tiring, large workload, long season and in my opinion hasn't been too flattering - needs a rest)

Grimes - Rance (Rance has been good and will come straight back in - Grimes has been good, but needs to earn his spot instead of have it given to him, Thursfield is still our best KPD IMO)
Houli - Webberley (Tough call - Houli has been consistent but his disposal has been a bit of a letdown, Webberley generates more run and and with NMFC returning from Perth, we want to run them off their feet.)
Nahas - Nason (Provides better run, despite solid efforts I still feel we are carrying Nahas)
Helbig - Morton (Helbig has done good job, now he deserves a rest, Morton Riewoldt Vickery Miller King - now thats unpredictability)

FB: Dea Thursfield McGuane
HB: Grigg Rance Newman
C: Cotchin Jackson Deledio
HF: Morton Vickery White
FF: King Riewoldt Miller
Foll: Graham Martin Foley
Int: Nason Batchelor Conca Webberley

You want to make 6 changes to our 22? You must be kidding. You clearly have little idea about team cohesiveness. Have you watched football in the last 2 years. When DH was making 4 and 5 changes a week in 2010 to try to find the right mix, we didn't win a game. When Knights started doing the same at the Bombers they couldn't win games.

If they are 6 changes you would like made over several weeks then that is more acceptable and understandable but if you want to make them this week then you are clearly not wanting a win.

I can't believe how much people are potting Astbury a second year player and suggesting he needs a rest. Seriously he is a second year KPD who in the past two weeks has kept Brown and also Roughead quite. He won the points against Roughead for sure. That is his job to hold down an opponent and he will start to run off more as we get better.

For me Edwards has to go. His disposal was shocking...the worst I have seen. Couldn't do a thing right.

OUT - Grimes (still to raw), Miller, Edwards, Houli

IN - Rance, Post, Webberley, Dea

As much as I want to see guys like Nason, Post, Webberley & Tuck get in, I also reckon most of the 'firsts' need to get a chance now that we are going to be up against teams more in our stratosphere rather than top 4 locks like The Pies and probably The Hawks.

McGuane has to come in to add size/experience to the backline but that may well be the only change... Edwards or Houli or Helbig out. (Extra height needed against The Roos + under the roof)

I would considerr shifting Astbury up forward for a bit with one of the 3, (Miller, Vickery & Astbury) on the pine at any given time.

No, but I got the information from 3 different websites and each report basically said the same thing about Gourdis.

How much of that was copied from site to site?
For all we know whoever wrote that in the first place may have confused him with someone else. There are also reports from someone who went onto the ground during one of the breaks that the coach singled Gourdis out for praise in the huddle.

You can believe what you want to believe, I know I do, but I was there and Gourdis was easily in our best in the first half. What happened in the 2nd half I don't know, so he may well have dropped the bundle and it sounds like Thornton managed to get on top of him. This line you keep trotting out about "stopping the bleeding" isn't accurate IMO. He came off injured, Post went back to cover him and then when he was right to go he came on up forward for a bit, rather than just swapping them back straight away. It was only for a short time and he actually managed to kick a goal too. Post was dominating up forward, there's no way they would swap him back for Gourdis only to minimise Goo's mistakes. Coburg coach told Gourdis at quarter time to "continue backing yourself and keep making the right decisions," so they're obviously pretty pleased with how he's going about it. If he stuffed up a few plays in the second half, that would undoubtedly drop his overall game rank.

From The Coburg Report on our Tiges website (by Development Coach David Newett):

David Gourdis (11 kicks, 9 handballs, 5 marks)
Started in defence, but was outpointed by the experienced Carlton-listed Bret Thornton. Was shifted forward later in the game and got involved in some scoring chains towards the end.

Don't think we'll see him this week.

Reading through that report it would be fair to suggest that Tuck and Webberley are probably leading the way to come into the side. Also pleased to read that although Dea didn't get a heap of the ball he did a pretty decent job as a small defender.

This is what I would do:

Out: Edwards (until he fixes his kicking woes), Astbury - Something seems not quite right with him atm. Maybe he just needs a rest or a couple of matches for coburg?

In: Tuck, Rance

hey dude, your name sake Axel should be about ready to bounce back to top form too this week. Have watched him and he hasnt really put on the afterburners, tipping he is easing his way to top pace. Once he does that adds 1 more to the list of 3 current terrorisers we have in the midfield. ;)

Rance and McGuane (& possibly Post) will be considered for selection this week, SO where does that leave Thursfield? Does he deserve to keep his spot on Sunday? Yep, I reckon the selection table will include several players to hopefully strengthen our youthful outfit.

It's welcoming to here that Rance, Mcguane, Post, Webberley, Nason will possibly be considered this week. Hoping Moore and Griffiths aren't too far away. In saying that, consider ourselves fortunate enough that we have
not endured an injury riddled start to the season like Essendon, St Kilda, the Cows and North (just to name a few).

FYI, I am actually touching a plank of 4x2 whilst posting this!!!

OUT: Edwards, Astbury, Thursfield, Helbig
IN: Tuck, McGuane, Rance, Webberley

Still puzzled why some are giving Graham a bake - he's been more than worthy of keeping his spot, but I'm telling you this much, Browne won't play any better than Gus, and Derickx needs another 2 or 3 games at Coburg.

Ize... Gourdis rolled his ankle 30 seconds into the third qtr went back on 25 min mark of that qtr but was clearly sruggling to get off the ground and manuver went to FF and was ok on the straight lead, had the better of Thornton till the injury

You'd better go and help the coaching staff then as they said Thorton outpointed him (this means Thorton was beating him, in case you don't understand ;)). No offence but I think I'll take the words of our coaching and development staff before those on BF...:)

Cohesivness?, hell there's more holes in that side then a piece of swiiss cheese

Astbury played on Brown the whole night, and actually did quite a good job containing him considering the size difference.

Astbury wont get dropped, he and Grimes have had to fill key defensive spots when Rance and McGuane should be filling them and rather then having to contain a teams #1 or #2 forward he will play on the 3rd or 4th best.
Astbury wont get dropped because Softwick knows his form and game in put at Coburg will put him in doubt of being repromoted this year

easy to work out for yourself.

if as spock says gourdis rolled his ankle early in the third and did not come back on until the 25 minute mark of that quarter hes collected 20 odd possesions mainly as a key defender in little more than three quarters.
seems hes only played two quarters in defense what i would like to know is thorntons stats for the first half and how many goals he had to half time after all that is all thats relevant he only played two quarters on the bloke.

And once again Santa (although I am starting to suspect you are actually Gourdis himself), I respect the opinions of those in charge of coaching and developing the club. Anyone can watch a game of football but not as many can understand it....;)

missed the last 2 games - Axl was pretty dissapointing when I saw him earlier - think he ought come thru Burgers tbh

potted summary of his games v hawks, pies anyone?

would LOVE to see him at full tilt this w. e.

Haven't read the entire thread, going by the Coburg report though what are peoples thoughts on Dea coming in? We obviously need a small defensive back to nullify dangerous small forwards, with North having a few I'd be good game experience for Dea.

Not saying I really rate him yet, but who else do we have?

Also would have Tuck and Post/Morton in.
