I get people feel compelled to push back against what they perceive as overly negative posts, but who here could put hand on heart and honestly say they are happy with the club’s midfield depth?

That’s the only point I’m trying to get across here peeps

The worst is when the replies are "bUt wE wOn tHe fLag", this adds nothing to the discussion of what the team is like currently.

The midfield depth is obviously a concern but the main problem currently is that our stars aren't performing and we haven't had a stable team structure all year.

The midfield depth is obviously our weakest area but I would also add that on top of MAllen and Ah Chee, we have Smith on the outside, Nelson could go into the guts or more outside and we could move Duggan or Cole if need be (which I am not advocating but it isn't all doom and gloom in terms of more mature bodies if we got an injury).

Midfield depth? There is literally none. Any genuine mid depth we have is Brayshaw (injured, slow work truck) or Anus (disposal absolutely horrendous)

There is a gaping lack of class when it comes to young midfielders at the club. Has been for a long time.

One thing which WILL frustrate me, if it happens, is if we lose some of this tall depth (Brander, Williams) we've bent over to obtain and develop at the expense of young midfield talent. No point passing on mids to invest in quality talls if we end up losing them anyway, to a club where they'll actually get game time.

On a side note I think Will Schofield should not start either. He is only suited to specific match ups and def should not be an automatic inclusion every week as a TB replacement. Yes he played well in GF, yes he also does well in specific games pending on match-ups, however, he is almost non existent when he does not have his match ups and costs us alot in the air and o the ground and in pressure work.. We have nothing to lose by playing Rotham instead of him, what you will lose is couple of good match up games that Will offers. What you gain instead is experience and games into young player until TB comes back. Lots of issues with Cole and Jetta and Duggan at the back partially comes back to Will schofield, it is a collective defence and all it takes is for one player to miss the beat and be out of tune and every thing all of a sudden looks harder.players are one step slower. what you guys think??

Unless the plan is to move OAllen back - Schofield stays in

Rotham isn't going to be able to take down a tall.

We'd rather Schoey do that freeing up Gov to do Gov things.

I hope we do move Oscar back till Barrass is ready. For me it solves the too tall issue up front having 3 players all going for the ball and Allen looks more composed down back compared to Schofield who has looked very shaky down there.

That’s the only point I’m trying to get across here peeps

You probably preaching in the wrong thread to make any decent points on drafting..

I don't think it's too bad.

In actual fact you could argue we are playing one too many mids already - hence Sheed is playing a lot f50.

The days of having 10-12 blokes rotating through the guts is long gone (for WC at least)

We play 6 mids and have blokes like Rioli or Cripps spend a few minutes in there.

As it stands we are playing 7 mids - which is purely due to the talent there. The reality is one of Sheed or Masten is our "depth"

That may well be the case - particularly if NN is back and we go back to 2 rucks. (And TB isn't back)

6 talls is enough. Gov, JK, Darling, TB, NN pick themselves when fit. So that leave OAllen, Hickey & Vardy fighting for the other spot to support Nic in the ruck. And given his inability to ruck more than about 60% it wouldn't bode well for OAllen.

I'd only be happy to lose quality talls if they're surplus to requirements and net us a need - bit of Sinclair for Jetta type action. But to do that we would need to play them and grow their value.

As for the bit about them actually getting game time, it's not as though we have a plethora of talls all wasting away in the twos. Tall players understand they are a project and take longer to be ready for games, but if anything we've tried to fit them in when we shouldn't.

All of Waterman, Brander, Allen and Rotham have had games and shown something. Barrass came in and only left for skerricks of improvement when it became obvious he was far too good for WAFL. They'll be aware Schoey and JK aren't here for the long term and positions will become available. Aside from that who have we forgotten in the twos to lose their career? Williams and Edwards haven't even been with us for half a season. Maybe there's someone obvious I've overlooked.

Is it really depth or simply form though?

The same midfield minus Gaff did win a flag 8 games ago.

We have Gaff and soon Naitanui to add to that midfield with Lycett covered by Hickey.

Are we playing kids or B graders in the midfield?

No.

It is a form issue much more than a depth issue IMO. And sure everyone would love another A grader. Thats a given.

I think I know where you are going with this. Vardy straight swap for T Kelly?

I just reckon when there's a fired up opponent or a tough environment too many of the players are thinking "ah well I've got my medal already".

I think we'll look back at the end of the year and say the team never really got going.

Hickey for Vardy
Smith for Masten
Brander for Allen
Brander to back line.

So which of the incumbent back seven moves elsewhere to make way for Brander?

How will Brander be expected to fare in the backline having not played there all year?

With Allen gone who backs up Hickey in the ruck?

No back up for Hickey.

Extra tall in the back line one less tall forward.

Brander can't be worse down back than wherever he has played in his other three games. I actually think it will suit him.
