Blakely is clearly better than the following;

2019 Wilson
Hughes
Nyhuis
Cerra
2019 Langdon
Tucker
Brayshaw
Matera
McCarthy
2019 Hogan
Conca
Colyer
Switkowski

Absurd that some are defending his non selection.
Agree, only one guy is saying its because hes secretly shit though. hahaha To put it in perspective disregarding injury Cera and Brayshaw would dream of having first and second seasons like Blakely had.

Play your way in and play your way out does not mean that 1 or even 2 bad games means you get dropped. This was the biggest criticism of the way Taberner was handled, that every time he had a couple of bad games he was dropped back to the WAFL - we can't have it both ways.

I'm not sure that any one individual deserved to be dropped based on the Adelaide game, everyone gave it a red-hot crack and we came up short.

From what I saw on the weekend, only Connor really played well enough to push himself up to the firsts, and for whatever reason the selectors saw it differently. I can guarantee if Connor played this week and (God forbid) got injured, the pitchforks would be out for the S&C team again for rushing him back.

We all want to keep improving, it might just need a little patience.

I'm not really expecting an answer because obviously the benchmarks used by the club are unknown to all of us, but look at what happened to Lobb last week and tell me why anyone thinks he is the long term ruck option and what more Darcy had to do last week to bump Lobb to forward and 2nd ruck. The persisting with players idea only makes sense if you are developing them as a long term option in the role.
Ditto Blakely and several fringe types he could replace. The long term options are sitting out of the team not in it. By all means keep them out if the team is flying but we just kicked 5 goals in a game and got pantsed in the ruck

I doubt the selection process relates purely to who is the better player/s. Other factors come into it. I would guess having played 2 games since June last year is a factor pretty high in the selectors thinking.

Keep hearing on the radio and elsewhere that it's purely fitness. They really don't want him even slightly under done.

I think he's actually been kept out because there's a Peel bye this week.

He'll be straight back in next week.

Don't want to make this a big long argument because as you say we don't know what the reasons are that Blakely isn't in the side, but my guess is that the S&C guys are being cautious for whatever reason and I have no issue with that. I'm sure if it was a final they would risk it, but it's round 8 and why would you rush a guy back in if there is any doubt? I honestly believed he looked ready based on the last Peel game, but I don't have access to anything but what I saw.

As far as Sean Darcy goes, he played with a large bandage on his lower leg last week and apart from his centre tap work his game was very poor in my eyes and the guys I sat with. He is definitely our long term first ruck preference, but as it stand now he would be a downgrade on Lobb for this week purely from a fitness / mobility standpoint.

Anyway, happy to disagree - none of us really know what is going on. I am hanging to see Connor and Sean both back in the side, along with Griffin Logue and Stephen Hill but I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer.

How can a team that only kicked five goals on a sunny afternoon and lost not have anyone that played their way out?

Exactly right. Even teams that won last week have omitted players because they want to improve. We’re seemingly happy with a team that carried a handful of passengers last week, or some posters on here are. The acceptance of close enough is good enough is astounding around here!

I really enjoyed and was happy with the team on a whole but Freo did have passengers and Blakely deserves a game.

Otherwise give Bewley a go or someone else.

Just to note Freo haven't announced it's final 22 as yet

man how blakely isnt in the side is mental....
Every person on this thread is calling for him back in the team!
Yeah but pretty much the same people who are calling loudest for his inclusion would also lose their minds if he came back in and blew his hammy in the first few minutes. I am pretty sure he is highly rated by the people that matter at the club and when he is ready he will be back in the side. I don't think he is needed this week and if he gets some extra K's in his legs and pulls up ok after the weekend training he will no doubt do then maybe next week is the go.

The point I am trying to make is that too many on here seem to think they know better about a players readiness to play and the same ones blow a gasket at the S&C guys if someone comes back too soon, Blakely has not played since June last year and missed 13 weeks of training. Surely it makes sense to build him back slowly and carefully so he is actually good to go as a midfielder when he comes back into the team.

Are you going to be shocked if S. Hill spends some time at Peel proving he is over he's LTI??

If he has not been picked, even as an emergency then I would assume he is still not playing at 100%. If he is not 100% then don't play him. Pretty simple formula the club has been sticking to this year and the current guys are doing okay. Why make unnecessary/risky changes?

Way over-reaction over the non-inclusion of someone who did a bad hammy back in January (I think).

Let the cobblers do their cobbling, i'm sure he will get his chances.

See writing something like this is just silly...you are basically implying that he was not selected when he clearly is 100% ready to play. Fact is, neither you or I or anyone outside of the club actually knows the reason why he wasnt selected...he may well have a couple of other boxes that need to be ticked prior to coming into the side. Point is, we dont know.

A hamstring doesn't know the difference between Rushton park and Optus stadium. No one I know takes it easy when they are playing down a grade, let alone blokes who are paid multi-thousand dollar match bonuses when playing at the top level. He has played two games now and played well. He is clearly in our top fifteen and I would say narrowly inside our top ten players. He should walk into this side as soon as he is fit and I think he has demonstrated that he is.

The intensity of the game is far lower, and thus the risk of injury and fatigue

Harley Bennell can also string WAFL games together. As soon as he plays AFL, Goneski.... it is not the same

He would have KPIs to hit. Unless we have access to these KPIs then we won’t know if he’s hit them.

No Darcy is annoying me though

The backline is easily our strength atm so can understand Connor not being favoured there. If it is midfield then the obvious out is Andy, but that won't happen regardless of what anyone here thinks. Same goes for Cerra.

Struggle to think who comes out unless we lose a forward and Cerra goes there but don't think that is ideal since he isn't quick. I think it will take an injury, a totally abject performance or 2 from Tucker, Andy, Cerra, Nyhuis or Hughes or a change in structure (which seems unlikely given we have too many talls as it is not getting games that probably should).

Luck sure, but it goes both ways and luck could have also seen them lose by 8 goals.

You nailed it with the second point though. They don't have good forwards so much of their top notch midfield work goes to waste. You could easily have said we would have belted them if we added a fully fit Shilly into our lineup in place of one of our i50 butchers.

They don't have that and that is a large part of why they are not better. So basically you are just saying, if they had better players, they would be better. Which is of course true for every team.

Yeah yeah but that comment was just part of a convo with another poster on why I didn’t bet on the doggies but am weighing up backing the tigers

Margetts and Wallace umpiring is not so good!

Happy with Cox in and was expecting McCarthy to go out as he has not been the same since he missed due a virus

Peel doing nothing this week so they will be able to do some high load running into Blakley, McCarthy and the rest
