Changes: Round 8 Vs Richmond

I think you can make changes up to 90 minutes before the game (not sure how many of the emergencies - occasionally teams will make more than one) , and then anything later prior to the game incurs a fine.

Usually its pretty clear which player out of the 4 players named is going to be the emergency for us, especially on away trips. The opposition knows who the change might be, and in home games there's usually a WAFL game that makes it clear which player has been kept on stand-by, however this week we can keep them guessing. Usually we go in with the 22 as named, which makes it more of a surprise when we do. Could be a double bluff, I suppose.

Remember reading something early last year that Chris Scott was making late changes most weeks that it was becoming a predictable tactic.

I suppose we've also waited to see which of their emergencies took the trip over to Perth.

Good change tbh. We need better from our third and small forwards.
McCarthy has been really off last fortnight. Cox deserves his chance

We also need a lot more from our fourth emergency. Bewley really struggled in the role earlier today and didn’t give great effort when carrying Fyfe’s bags. He’ll live and learn.

Strange one, McCarthy has been of, but Cox hasdn't set the world on fire either...

Cox was only omitted in the first place after the GWS game because McCarthy's form up to that point was really good. I'm much more comfortable giving Cox ago to earn his spot back, rather than do nothing which breeds complacency.

Cox deserves to come in for McCarthy. Might not have McCarthy's skills, but showed a lot more competitive effort in his one game than McCarthy showed in last week and probably week before too. Has the bonus of being able to pinch hit in the ruck too. Of course, that puts another player in the team who's kicking at goal is diabolical. Still, don't mind the change.

As for calls for Darcy. AFAIC, Darcy needs to be absolutely cherry ripe fit and completely in form to get into the team. He just doesn't have that base aerobic capacity and maturity yet (it will come) so he's a bit of a liability around the ground even when in form and injury free - we just can't afford to carry him until he's smashing it at WAFL level. When he's fully up and about, throw him back in and he'll develop.

The caveat there is we do need to look after Lobb as well - so might be a window there soon.

I can only assume Blakely is undercooked at the moment which is why he hasn't been named. Seems pointless when Peel has the bye but hey ho! He might end up being the new Barlow in more ways then we know.

McCarthy has the skills. But unlike Cox, he has no one on one ability to get the ball to use such skills. No point being in the side due to his skill set when he can’t get more then a few marks a game.

Tweet just came through. Blakely has come in to replace Bewley in the emergencies. Club must have just realized Peel's not playing.

What do you mean? Ross will play him in the half-forward death-seat, wait till he has a couple of bad games and delist him? What's the list now -

Duffy
Mellington
Barlow
DeBoer
Crozier
Kersten
McCarthy

Poor Sturt.

I don’t think anyone deserved to be dropped from last week, I think regardless of the score the team as a whole gave enormous effort and deserves to be back on the park for another go around.

I’m so glad you’re not coaching us or involved in the selection of the team. Firstly giving good effort isn’t enough, and secondly we had some terrible performances last week.

Blakely in to CHB or Mid? Think I'd prefer him in the mid with Cerra playing back
Mundy up forward playing McCarthy's role?
Makes a lot of sense to me. Those three can be moved in and out of positions with the flow of the game without any drama at all. But I think Hogan will be playing more McCarthy's role (well, really more of the role suited to Hogan as a mobile forward).

Another possibility is rest Hamling (carrying a cork from reports), send Cox down back to replace him, Cerra pays forward/mid and Blakely comes in playing defence/mid.

Geez thanks for that. I stand corrected I guess lol.

But, was it terrible performances or just the result of relentless pressure from Adelaide? That game was a freak, we made a lot of their not “good” but “great” players look completely ordinary, and so it was... visa versa.

It was a unique game (a bloody ripper) and it felt Septemberish and it was one of those games where you could forgive those with crappy stats as I dare say they were giving it all they had on the day. Some won, some lost - all’s fair in love and war in that type of a game and you’d back the same team to be a complete handful for Richmond.

But what the F would I know....

So Blakely was always a good chance to play, the selectors just couldn’t find room for him.

Bizarre isn’t it. Top 10 player at the club, dominated in the last reserves game is fit enough to be named emergency but can’t be squeezed into a team that scored 34 points last round?

Maybe it’s just mind games and tactics after all and he plays. If not, you have to ask what the **** is going on.
