Himmelberg is a tricky one

Did bugger all but was the only one of our tall forwards who was able to make a contest and bring it to ground at all

Everyone else just got out marked.

Still, when he brought it to ground the ball just got instantly swept away anyway so it makes little difference

Out:
McHenry (inj), Murphy (inj), Thilthorpe (managed), McPherson, Kelly

In:
O’Connor, Newchurch, Jones, Worrell, Murray

Sub:
Mackay

B: Brown - Butts - Doedee
HB: Smith - Murray - Hamill
C: Seedsman - Keays - Sholl
HF: Newchurch - Walker - Berry
F: Rowe - Himmelberg - Schoenberg
R: O’Brien - Laird - Sloane
Int: Worrell, Jones, Fogarty, O’Connor
Sub: Mackay

Notes:
1) It is blatant that neither of McAdam or Newchurch deserve to be selected for this game, but with all of Murphy, McHenry, Gollant and Milera unavailable, we are forced to select one of them. I’d Newchurch a debut to see if he can show something at the top level. In reality, Nicks and co will opt to bring back McAdam.

2) I’m taking no risks with Thilthorpe’s knee. Chuck him on ice for at least a week. Ease him back through the SANFL after that. That hyper extension has “weakened the ACL somewhat” written all over it. Minimise the threat.

3) McPherson is a shell of the player he was last year and needs to go back to the SANFL immediately. It needed to happen a month ago. Looks mentally shot.

4) Playing Kelly over Worrell is completely pointless. Time to make a change there.

5) We’re too short down back, especially against the Eagles 3 headed monster of Kennedy, Darling and Allen. Playing all 4 of Butts, Murray, Doedee and Worrell fixes this. Doedee and Worrell have the agility to make this a viable option. The selectors may even prefer to bring in McAsey ahead of one of Worrell / Murray for this fixture. Worrell will be extremely stiff to miss out considering how much better he has been this year overall than anyone else at SANFL level in our squad.

6) We’re too tall up forward. Managing Thilthorpe and not bringing in a tall to play in that half of the ground to replace him resolves this. Fog, Schoenberg, Berry and even O’Connor spend some more time inside 50 to compensate.

7) 3 debutants in one game, in Perth, is an absolute pipe dream and won’t happen. We’ll find a way to retain one or both of Mackay and Kelly, and we’ll probably persist with the ridiculously tall forward line that is completely useless once the ball hits the deck.

Pick 2-4 here we come!

The only one of those named players that was serviceable in the SANFL today was Hately, McAdam and Newchurch were woeful and that's being kind.
well at least a couple will have to come in anyways. guess that happens when the cupboard is pretty bare.

Berry?

Oh yeah that reminds me O’Brien was disgraceful

remember when we signed him early on for5 years and everyone was happy? He was ELITE

WHOOPS
He's definitely spent much of this year underlining and bolding the "for a ruckman" qualifiers on all his positive qualities. His ruckwork hasn't been particularly amazing either for that matter.

IMHO, after the Naitanui incident last year, O'Brien is way too embarrassing to be anything less than top 5 on the ground each game.

Watch us pick Jones, stick him in the Forward Pocket aka no mans land where he’ll proceed to get 6 touches and shatter any smidgen of confidence he’s built up in the last couple of weeks.

27 touches yesterday, you'd think he'd be close, but we won't be dropping Mackay. So you'll probably be right.

If it was me;
Out
Tex (inj) - focus on being fit for a block of games starting in about 4 weeks
Murphy (inj)
McHenry (inj)
Mackay (omit)
Kelly (omit)

In
Newchurch/McAdam for Tex
O'Connor for Murphy
Hately for McHenry
Worrell for Dmac
McAsey/Murray for Kelly

Effectively replacing Tex role with a small forward and a small forward is now a mid. Or a mid for a tall forward but I think the 2 steps in one would cause confusion amongst the 'like for like' brigade who seem to think we've had a perfect structure these last dozen or so years. Berg on thin ice, but gets another chance with only 3 key forward types and a bit more running power around the place. 3 is ok as long as one is quick and mobile, Fig playing a bit of midfield is a bit like that in the sense that he's not in the 50 as much, so it'll be a resting mid a fair bit of the time.

What we'll do is replace the injuries with McAdam and Hately or Jones.

I've been saying this all year. He has zero ruck craft and is the most uncoordinated player I have ever seen. Surely we can do better in the ruck and havent locked him in for 10 years.

I still see Himmelberg as a ruck. He has the height, a deft touch and an excellent handball in congestion. Fitness is a concern but ROB looks permanently gassed.
Surely O’Brien has to be in the gun. He was worse than Himmelberg tonight, and has been comprehensively smashed most of the year now. Play one of Himmelberg or Frampton - both sub par choices I know - in the ruck and leave TT, Fog and Tex in the forward line. O’Brien was weapons grade stinky tonight, and we looked better without him every time he was benched. He can’t keep getting games putting in performances like that.

Not many option really but selection should really be based around list Management.

Personally I'd play Jones for four weeks, not much point worrying about players earning a spot as half the team don't deserve to be playing.

I don't think Newchurch or Borlase are ready but I'd give them a go over the next month.

O'Brien needs a rest I think, so this might be the week

Start with the injuries first

McHenry - Concussed by a dog act, just as he was starting to find a niche. Go fishing next weekend mate.

Murphy - Our ever dwindling small stocks take another hit. Looks like surgery is the go.

Now........

DMac - Back to the sub role

Tex - Time for a rest. I couldn't give a flying **** if he wants to play, he's flat and even a Showdown couldn't get him out of it. Saves Berg for a week.

ROB - Controversial but he's been trash. We're gonna lose the ruck anyway so leave him out.

IN

This is where it gets hard. We lose 2 smalls and have virtually nothing to bring in given McAdams lack of form.

Worrell - Just HAS to play. Kennedy, Darling, Allan and the resting ruck.... Faaaaaark.

ROC - Another very good game in the 2s and deserves a go back home to see what he has.

Newchurch - He isn't ready, but we've got no one else and we simply can't bring McAdam back in.

Jones - Looks to have found his role, whether or not he can do it at senior level is a question that needs answering.

Last 1 is tough. Do we go Hately again and tell him (and Berry) just to run with Sheed and learn from him. Do we bring Billy back to run through the ruck with Berg, has been in good form though I'd rather not. Or.... Do we go another tall defender with Murray/McAsey. The well is dry.

I think I understand it now.

When someone in our squad is learning to play in the AFL ... If they don't hit the level immediately, we scream at them and send them packing.

Got it.

OUT: everyone who has played under 100 games and never got a top ten in the B&F ... Except Thilthorpe.

IN: Imaginery ready made superstars.

Phew, this is easier than I thought! I was under the delusion that a full rebuild was going to be a long painful journey filled with lessons and bad losses.
