Hey team, can anyone comment on what the ground is like for kids? Any activities on or particular areas that are better for families around the ground?

Rory lobb on a wing needs to be added to that amazing bevo bingo board post haste!

I understand the premise of Lobb to the wing for patches of the game but wouldn't Khamis be the perfect addition as the 'extra tall', not O'Donnell. Khamis is a significantly better forward and has the ability to swing back if needed.
Is he? Was hardly sighted when the game was in the balance on Sunday in the 2s the got his customary couple of late goals when the game is over to pump up the statline.

JOD also has the ability to swing back if needed and is a genuine KPP Buku simply isn't and never will be

Matthew Richardson was a KPF his whole career and moved to the wing in 2008 where he became an AA and 3rd in a Brownlow he's had some interesting calls over his time i.e Wood forward but having a mobile tall athletic play that can cover ground the way Rory does isn't that outrageous

I don't think so. Keath has redeemed himself a bit over the last few weeks and is part of a pretty settled and coherent defensive unit. I'd be erring on the side of continuity unless he or anyone else plays a game costing shocker.
Very poor against Carlton and mistakes directly cost us at least 2 of their goals.

Buku has form in the role for quite some time now, at VFL level, at AFL level and throughout the whole preseason.

Can JOD genuinely play both ends? How would you know to make this call… we actually know Buku can play both ends. Plus being not genuine KPP size is a positive for mine considering the rest of the 22.

I like the look of the kid but there is just no way he should be playing AFL right now, I hope he proves me wrong but it was very lucky it didn’t cost us on the weekend and it’s quite possible it does cost us over the next few weeks. He was invisible and we played a man down for 3 qtrs, he hindered our structure more than added to it, evidenced by our ability to lock the ball in improving tenfold after he went off.

Again nothing against him he looks like a super talent I’m really excited about him, but the selection was arrogant and could prove costly. Hopefully I’m wrong & he dominates

Time and description please, only glaring error I remember is English dropping a mark and Curnow goal about 20 seconds before 3/4 time. I also think they got one from a shocking Dale kick in

Sounds about right.
They only kicked 8 - the above 2, three from Owies (all from marks near the arc IIRC), another from Curnow (I think Keath might have been on him at the time but it wasn’t a Clanger) one from Walsh (a mark i50) and one from Durdin (from a mark?)

What form does Buku have? Outside of the last 2 weeks where he has kicked 4/7 goals in the last quarter when the games were over he's kicked more than 1 goal once

JOD despite not getting much of the ball last week played his role really well hence all of our talls had good separation.

He was in fine form in the 2's so to suggest it was arrogant is a ridiculous statement

That Curnow goal where Keath was on him was also a low bullet that he was never going to stop.

How's Mrs H?

I was initially positive about the JOD selection. But on reflection, I've got concerns.
On Saturday he was used as a "pinch-hitting" marking forward.
On the exposed form selecting JOD over Buku demonstrates poor selection integrity. This is bad for both immediate team results and overall team morale (especially for our players in the VFL).
Beveridge is a good coach. However, I have deep concerns with the overall structure, processes, and decision-making of our footy department.

I don't think it's right to describe Keath's game against Carlton as very poor.

He primatily played on Charlie Curnow. Keeping their biggest weapon (and reigning Coleman medallist) relatively quiet was a significant contribution.

He does look ungainly, even panicky, with ball in hand but I think his confidence and results are returning.

In 2021 he was moving like a crab and started 2022 poorly but is steadily improving for mine.

The stats say his disposal efficiency was 89% on the weekend.

In the first 3 weeks of this year he had 12 clangers, in the past 6 weeks he has had 6.

Going from 4 a game to 1 a game is a healthy progression.

Clearly the core defensive group is building chemistry and producing strong results.

Keath is not going anywhere in the short term.

He’s been our leading goal scorer at VFL bar Schache for last two years despite being tasked with playing as the lone forward half the time and back up ruck. He’s had good games at AFL level from limited opportunties, he was the best performed forward all preseason outside the big 3.

What form does JOD have? Literally zero game time in a forward line at any level.

Hence all our talls had good separation? Lmao what game were you watching - there was a lot of positives last week, separation between our talls was certainly not one of them.

Yes he had good form in defence, it was arrogant to play him off 3 VFL games in defence as a forward at AFL level - it nearly cost us. We’re not doing him any favours, let him play half a season at VFL level in the fwd line if that’s the position we see him playing.

I have a long standing dislike for Ballarat from playing sport there at times. Most of the fields and facilities down there are pretty poor standard. But it was the cold that always got to me most. I'd rather play in 35C than 5C every time. Aside from the snow fields, Ballarat has a long standing reputation for being more miserable and cold than other locations in that area of VIC during winter. I'd groan every time I saw a Ballarat ground pop up when fixtures were released.

Mind you, definitely not the location of the coldest game I have ever played in. My coldest ever game was -2 degrees, endlessly pissing down rain hard for 3 hours. That goes to some location near Berwick. Was the most miserable I have ever felt during a game, and normally I LOVE wet games. I could not move my fingers for 30 mins after, or untie my boots. Muscles were stiff as for days.

So he's been worse than Schache yet you think that is enough to get a game?

JOD has the attributes to play as a forward and again draws attention away from the opposition

Lobb/Naughton/Marra had 7 marks inside 50 combined the week prior they had 3 it worked well

How did it nearly cost us? we were winning the game convincingly whilst he was on

Curious, why do people keep saying that playing JOD almost cost us the game? Last time I checked, he was playing when we raced out to a 4 goal lead, though his impact was minimal. His rate of getting the ball per minute is on par with the other forwards who played the whole game. And all of his possessions were actually contested, was close to getting a goal as well.

And then he sat on the bench for almost the entirety of the 3rd Q, before being subbed, where we pissed away our lead. Find it weird blaming a guy not on the field for the way the rest of the team played in the shitty early part of the third, to late in the 4th quarter.

And then some giving the vibe that the sub helped us win the game. When McNeil came on the field, Bevo only used him for roughly 12 minutes of game time and he did not get a single possession. McNeil didn't help us win it either.

No issue with people questioning playing him forward. Or questioning bringing him in the team. Or if there was other players in the VFL more worthy. All are good discussions. But don't think its fair at all blaming us almost losing the game for someone who was not even on the field. We almost lost because we got beat at the clearances, English had his pants pulled down all game, we couldn't move the ball from defence to forward 50 at times, and we butchered our repeated inside 50s that created nothing. Standard issue that have flared up for us at times all season in most games (minus English). That is why we almost lost.

In fact, if it wasn't for Carlton butchering shots at goal, and our sturdy back line holding up when under siege. We'd have been 20 points down at some point and walked away with a loss.

You obviously haven't played here recently. Many clubs/grounds have been resurfaced in recent years, there are also some great facilities from upgrades, both in BFL and CHFL. Admittedly not all, but how many suburban leagues have ALL clubs with decent grounds and facilities.

I used to play in the EDFL in my younger years - some of the clubrooms were harsher than a factory during the industrial revolution, a couple of grounds literally had rivers as boundary lines after even a light shower. Others were swamps.

Even Keilor, always a well-funded club, I played a preseason game there once - ground surface was like concrete and I literally peeled the bottom of my feet off after the game from full-length blisters.

Yeah I haven't played there in like 6-7 years due to fixture and then covid, so of course a few facilities at the times that were scheduled to be upgraded or that would have been added since in that time. I know Ballarat was at the time getting heavily invested for new projects.

And I only played on three different grounds and watched at a couple of others. But one of the club rooms was tiny, you'd have to rotate with team mates when getting changed, and no hot water in shower. The field was quite heavy to run on, so hard on the legs. I can only really comment on my direct experiences, not that of others. Of course there would be much better grounds and facilites about, unfortunately we never got to experience the best of what the area has to offer. Though, an A grade or D grade facility, its still freaking cold haha. That is the main reason I disliked playing there, by far.

I did play one game on the new sporting facility, which I admit is one of the best I have ever played on. Cannot remember the name of it, but it was a big as stand, surround by multiple sporting fields covering many different sports. Surface was top tier, as was the change rooms. Sadly was the only good surface and facilities out of almost 10 games there.

Talking about no skin/blisters. I played on a ground near Ringwood late summer, middle of a 42 degree day, the grass was bare, ground hard as a rock. Tackled someone, and my leg was pinned under them against the ground, momentum of us both took a good couple meter slide. From the top of my ankle, to half way up my thigh, I had ZERO skin from middle shin bone, all the way around to near the back of my calf. The whole side leg, was all raw, pink and bleeding. Had to wear garbage bags in showers, bandaged whole leg before working as the slight brush of my pants against the would sting. Was deep enough to be seeping and infected for weeks. It took two months before the entire thing scabbed over fully to the middle of the wound, and then more for the skin to return to normal. Should have gone to the doctor in hind sight. But definitely the grossest injury I have had thanks to a ground like concrete.

That ground made a meat crayon out of me.

Yes.

But not Dunkley. An elite defensive mid has the ability to close down space very quickly and make a tackle. Dunkley can tackle but was too slow to be the defensive mid we need.
Strong disagree that we need an elite defensive mid - who would they push out? Libba, Bont, Treloar all have the ability to do what you've described - but its a mindset adjustment.

Since Rd 3 our team defence and backline have been very good. I don't think we need much help in this area.

I'm as big of a Keath critic as anyone, but he has been decent recently and thought his game on the weekend was good. He was miles better than Gardner who still has no craft or guile to his game at all. He sees the ball in the air and sprints to punch it away. Doesnt matter whether he is spoiling us, them or no one
