Not sure the weather will be as bad as some are predicting.

BOM forecast is for 1-3 mills of rain, most likely in the evening.

And not too windy which can impact on a ground like Mars Stadium.

massive generalisation but talent counts more in the forward line and experience more in defence. Wouldnt be letting JOD anywhere near the back half at AFL level yet. And its mystifying how we could pass up Buku for JOD if we are that desperate to push Lobb to a wing.

I dont get it.
I just don’t understand why we need an extra tall to push Lobb up the ground, that’s the whole point of having 3 IMO, you have the flexibility to throw Naughty back or put Lobb up the ground or through the ruck and still have two talls forward of the ball. Still have Bont/English to roll through there too which I don’t want to write off completely.

If we want even more flexibility play the 3rd tall defender as someone we can swing forward ie JOD, Darcy, Buku, even TOB

Im not buying into the hype of Adelaide they've lost 2 out of their last 3 and only just scraped home against Hawthorn and also lost to GWS

I think we win and win well.. Tex won't kick a goal as Jonesy will give him a bath
Something tells me you haven't actually watched them play.

Outside of Collingwood the most exciting, high intensity team in the comp.

Naturally, as a young side they don't travel away from home well yet - which should gives us the edge on Saturday.

I can see Adelaide playing in a GF/ Prelim in the next 18months.

Walker gives them an experienced big body forward, and Doedee is important down back. They could both be gone by the 2024 season.

Always find some of the debates on this board "Interesting"

We played O'Donnell ahead of Buku. He is of genuine KPP size Buku is not. Buku's form has been patchy at best with nearly 70% of his goals coming once the game is over.

Buku's issue is running games out, yet O'Donnell was a mistake as he was unable to run a game out. Also it nearly cost us though Buku hs no form to show he would be any better.

On exposed form in the VFL having watched the games I would have thought O'Donnell had been in the system longer than Buku. Runs to better places and is significantly more involved when he did not have the ball.

The decision did not nearly cost us, there is nothing that shows that. There is nothing to show Buku would have done better in the role and also there is nothing from the weekend that would demonstrate Buku should replace O'Donnell.

Have said this many times, there are no players in the VFL at the moment genuinely putting their hand up saying they should be in the 22 ahead of anyone who played against the Blues, no one.

There is Trealor who is injured who is clearly in our bet 10 as well as a few younger players who have been injured who could and probably will push for a best 22 with a decent run. Cleary is unlucky but is not better than Doc at the moment.

I could understand the angst with O'Donnell getting a game had there been a fit Darcy, but there is not.

So unless there is the usual surprise injury it is likely there is one change at most.

Also, if your talls are mobile they are more that value coming to the back end of a wet game as they do not get any shorter and can control where the high ball goes

i've watched them play I just don't think the hype surrounding them is deserving

Yes, JOD as a sub would seem like a possibility too given that reasoning. It seems that sub is where the action will be as I have McSteal as $1.10 favourite to make the 22.
This is a dumb question. But who the @#$@ is McSteal? Please be respectful in your response because it is a serious question. I checked in the list of players and no McSteal. and why the nickname if it is one. i must have missed something.

Indeed you have missed something PL. McNeil is affectionately known as McSteal for his uncanny knack of being able to steal the ball off opposition players and send it back to us for a score. Little handball intercepts etc.

After his first few games Lachie McNeil was nicknamed McSteal by the other players due to his ability to shark the ball off the opposition.

thank you all for the response. much appreciated. you all get the PL super hero award for the explanations given.

I have a long standing dislike for Ballarat from playing sport there at times. Most of the fields and facilities down there are pretty poor standard. But it was the cold that always got to me most. I'd rather play in 35C than 5C every time. Aside from the snow fields, Ballarat has a long standing reputation for being more miserable and cold than other locations in that area of VIC during winter. I'd groan every time I saw a Ballarat ground pop up when fixtures were released.

Mind you, definitely not the location of the coldest game I have ever played in. My coldest ever game was -2 degrees, endlessly pissing down rain hard for 3 hours. That goes to some location near Berwick. Was the most miserable I have ever felt during a game, and normally I LOVE wet games. I could not move my fingers for 30 mins after, or untie my boots. Muscles were stiff as for days.
Kilmore would give Ballarat a run for its money. Barely above freezing at times, often playing in sleet as well. I remember the U14s coming off at half time, and hitting the hot showers just to warm up again.

Very early days but gut feel is JOD probably has more upside and probably a better career than Buks.

But not sure how can you come to this conclusion, one is playing FF/2nd ruck one is playing 3rd tall intercepter in defence? How can you come to the conclusion that one runs to better places over the other when they’re literally playing completely different roles - if JOD had shown more as a forward than Buku then I’d be the first to advocate him in… I’d be seriously concerned if he wasn’t getting more involved at HB.

In the 2.75 games we’ve had 4 tall forwards on the ground this year we’ve scored 20 goals to 36. Talls may not get smaller but not sure what good that does when we can’t hit the scoreboard and the balls strolling out of our defence the way it has round 1, 2 & for the first 3 qtrs on the weekend.

That midfielder would be useful at creating turnovers from an increase of pressure inside the contest AND be able to chase those fast mids that break away from contests at speed.

We don’t have a matchup for power/speed combos like Petracca and stopping being beaten repeatedly from the centre bounce. There are few teams that we have problems with but to win the flag, we need that defensive mid.
It's either that or develop and train our quicker mids (Smith and Treloar) to be able to go into lockdown mode when required. And there will be a requirement at some point, most likely against Melbourne. I don't think there's any escaping that and if we are to contend it's an answer we have to have.

I like the balance of what looks like our best 22 plus sub at the moment. There's scope for some serious offence. But that CB defense against a side with quick mids in a scenario where the opposing ruckman gains ascendancy for a period of time, well, that can get real nasty pretty quick and we don't have to look too far in the rear vision mirror to see when that bit us.

This season, it's my view that we have to persevere developing those defensive skills and techniques in Smith and Treloar and get as far as we can. I don't think we have a fast, strong defensive mid on our list this season so we have to work with what we've got.

Depending how far we get might determine our next move (cough...Butters...cough).

FTR, I think we're some sort of chance this year. Momentum seems to building within our ranks, but we need to be able STOP the opposition momentum when it inevitably comes and it starts at CB. I'm hopeful that we'll be able to by September (this year).

Intercepts are so valuable. A possession is just that, contested possession even better as you're getting a 50-50, intercept is turning their possession into ours - so valuable.
