I agree with McNeil in for JOD.

Having an extra tall against Carlton worked. I don't believe the balance is right at Ballarat if we go in unchanged.

I also don't think having a tall player as a sub is the right move. I'm not sure about the stats but I'd have thought the majority of subs are players who are smaller players.

Our sub will be interesting. If McNeil doesn't come in to the 22, he has to play VFL. Surely he can't be sub again. He needs game time, at either level.

Therefore I reckon the sub is likely to be McLean. The alternatives are West, McComb and VDM but none of those choices inspire me.

That leads me to my next point... How handy would Jong be right now. I know he divided opinion but he'd be perfect as a sub. Perfect impact player with a history of injury so he doesn't have to commit to a full game.

It's a real shame his career was cut short.

I've thought this of Jong. Timing is everything. The sort of player, quick and strong, who we could have put in at CBs with a completely defensive objective to stop the runs on like Melbourne got in the 21 Granny and others have subsequently. More than fast enough to get there and strong and committed enough to stick the tackles.

Loved Jong. We had a 5x better player than Jong though, Dunks. What a shame we lost him. Would be perfect as that defensive minded mid we're crying out for right now.

Imagine we could land Nash from Hawks.

In terms of defensive work Dunkley does 1% stuff great, tackling, smothers etc... but his actual defensive capabilities are being greatly overblown because of his matchup with Cripps a few weeks back. Dunkley just beat Cripps to the ball as opposed to doing an actual shutdown job on him, mainly because Cripps has zero pace. In terms of defensive minded mids Nash, Jarrod Berry are better than Dunkley but aren't better midfielders if that makes sense?

Anyway I feel like Marra and Naughton can really expose Butts and if he comes back in Murray for pace and agility. They are slow/plodding at best but real good in the contest. Opportunity there for quick and fast entries, hopefully we learnt our lesson from last year when Billy Frampton turned into Glen Jakovich/Matty Scarlett/Steven May/Tom Stewart.

Jong would be okay but I'd rather Giansiracusa

More importantly we could have a record for long sleeve jumpers worn in one game. Lock in Cody, Lobb, Arty and Caleb. Could Bont dust off his long sleever from a few years back?

Could this be a game where English is rested? Thought he looked a bit tired against Carlton. Sweet might be a good crash and bash option against O'Brien for this week only. Just a hypothetical.

Otherwise I can't see any changes apart from Khamis in for O'Donnell.

He didn't look particularly defensive in the last 40 minutes of the 21 grand final

It's going to be 11 here on Saturday, not minus 11!

Unless it rains, I'll probably be wearing short sleeves, with a light rain jacket in the backpack at the game. I know Ballarat has this reputation as some sort of Arctic outpost, but as evidenced the weekend just gone, autumn is usually mild.

July/August is cold, granted, but as someone originally born and bred in Melbourne's west, I spend virtually every weekend outdoors (when not at WB games at Marvel or here at Mars), and for the majority I wear shorts, and a light long-sleeved top. And I'm West of Ballarat in far more exposed country to the elements.

You 'city' people need to harden up! :)

Since when do 25 year olds need to be rested throughout the season? Should we rest Bont too? He was a bit quiet against Carlton so might be tired. McComb could come in as a bash 'n' crash option.

Bruce is back this week. VFL has a bye.

Could he slot in to the forward line for JOD? Might offer some experience to the mess.

Just read he's back in the mix & was coming to post this same thing.

I feel like the 3 talls (Naughts, JUH & Lobb) is our best mix but if Bevo wants to persist with another so Lobb can go rogue up the ground then surely Bruce up forward makes more sense than JOD (no disrespect to the kid but it's a bloody tough role to drop him into).

I thought Bruce did alright in defence until his injury. Maybe if Keath is rested.. it's a big risk though.

The best our forward line has looked in my time supporting the club was in parts of 2021 with Bruce and Naughton.
Who knows what Bevo is thinking now lol

Going to be shizen weather so I can’t imagine we’d be going in too tall.
