Roberton was one of our better performers in the 2010 final.

I was planning on raising a thread for this but i'm too busy, but if you try to narrow down our weakest 6 in our 22, most of them would appear to be guys in the backline, funnily enough. The same backline who's conceded the 2nd least number of points in the AFL all year.. No less.

Slightly off topic but, I'm really looking forward to seeing Roberton next year after he's put on another 10 kgs over the pre-season. He'll be a star one day.

Weakest links are Suban and Spurr for mine.

Spurr turned it over a bit too much the last time we played the Crows. I love his hardness at the contest though and we need him to take on one of a Porplysia, Petrenko or Callinan.

Suban has been okay as the sub of late and I like his versatility as he can play forward, back and in the middle depending on the situation.

I say no changes. We have a team that is settled, in form and is excecuting the game plan/structures correctly. Lets not tinker with anything just yet.

Stats, schmats!!

Bullshit way of analysing a players game.

I have just watched a replay and while it wasn't MZ's greatest game, he threw himself into every contest and was hardly a liability with his disposal. And he is hardly soft.

He's a role player and he does it very well.
I agree. Mzu was everywhere on Sat night, he just adds an intensity at the ball which is perfectly in tune with Lyon's hard at it theme.

For me, I don't think there were too many weak links at all. Accolades have already been thrown at every player who deserved them, all over the boards, and the only thing I have to add to it all is that I'm thinking we're really going to feel McPhee's absence next year f he decides to leave.

Maybe Ibbotsen? I really don't remember him being all that influential at all, and trying out another player wouldn't hurt at all, unless there is something I'm missing.

Any chance that McPharlin could make a "lazarus-type" recovery for next week?

Saw footage on nine news tonight of him doing sprints on the track. Would you be doing that with a bad hamstring injury?

IIRC it was a strain.

I've done my hammy twice (2 cricket seasons ago) first was a strain then it was a tear on the thursday night training before my first game back (4 weeks recovery). I'd be worried he would do the same, come back early and have it tear in the first 5mins of a game.

It's not worth the risk. Our best bet is to save him, let him rest and try and get him 100% for Hawthorn (If we make if ofc).

The way Sydney beat Adelaide was with pressure and persistence. tippet was ineffectual in those conditions, maybe he just does not care, I think he might be leaving the Crows next year. We should be able to replicate that pressure game and negate him anyway.

McPharlin has bigger fish to fry.

Spurr seems to know Callinan's game inside out though, having spent years at Central Districts together likely training against one another.

I'd be tempted to tinker around with the selection of Ibbotson, Spurr & Roberton.

For mine, Ibbotson just doesn't stick the tackles that he needs to. I know he structures up in all the right places etc, but in finals games throwing out one armed half arse tackle attempts doesn't cut it.

Maybe out Spurr. In Roberton. Sub Ibbotson (can come on and have effect later). Start Suban on the bench.

Ibbo has grown on me and he is now a very important cog in the the Freo side.

Spurr is doing really well , low key but doing his role. Watched the replay and saw that at times Spurr showed great composure under extreme pressure.

ibbo hasnt put a foot wrong for the last couple of weeks.

never gonna be a huge possession getter but is suprisingly extremely solid down back, peeling off opponents and marking infront of the contest

The depth in subans kicking has been very valuable when hes come on late and the games opened up a bit

Did you play state or for your country - you can't compare local cricket and AFL injury management - did you do yoga daily when you had your hammy? Iced it regularly? Regular massage? Ultra sound? Doubt you'd be answering yes to many of them...

not sure he was sprinting !! looked half pace at best......no chance for this week

It's rather naive those that suggest replacing the likes of Gu, Ibbo or Pearce at this stage of things. They have played all season, are battle hardened, know the structures and have the fitness base to play 4 quarters of high intensity footy.
You can't just pluck a first year like Neale that's played 2 WAFL matches or even a Lower that's played 1/4 season and expect them to perform in a cauldron of finals footy.
Then guys that got us here deserve to see it through barring injury.

At least someone has their head screwed on.

Regardless of what my answer is there is still a risk of coming back early, which is my whole point on the matter.

I think he's(ibbo) grown on Lyon too by the sounds of it.Last nite on 6PR,
Lyon was praising ibbo's beautiful kicking. We've actually got some pretty clean kickers(duff, ibbo, mcfee & Jono) down back now.

This. No changes unless forced. We just beat the Catters at the MCG.......why fix it if it isn't broken!!

Go and watch the first quarter again, Ibbo didn't put a foot wrong, intercept marking and delivery was first class. Considering how cold those blokes down in Geelong's forward line must have been just standing there like spare pricks at a wedding for most of the quarter it was a great effort.

Fair point, however I feel that it is just as naive to suggest that all 22 positions are locked in and every incumbent player is assured of a place in the team. Surely the hunger for a place in the team created by potentially solid replacements has all players striving that little bit extra.
If we have a player upgrade ready to go, we should do it. I believe that Griffin has played a larger proportion of good games this year than most in the team, yet he is not in the team. Past performances are exactly that, past performances.

Griff's been a role player like the rest of these guys, that's all he's been and a good one at that.

If you think he's any more, go and check the Freo tally for coaches votes for the year, hot tip, he's not on the list.

Sorry, I don't get where you are coming from. I agree that he is a role player, like the rest of these guys, so why can't they be dropped like he has?

Because there is not a single player available that is an upgrade on Pearce, Mzungu or Ibbotson, and we're playing finals. No time for experimenting.
