I know its pointless talking bout 'what ifs'... But you have to like the way Dick Douglas has gone about it this year, really worked hard and its showing.

Vince and Mackay are the two for mine that really should be hitting there prime and taking pressure off Danger/Sloaney/Thommo...

In fact i would go as far as saying Vince/Dmac have been disappointing this year. If Vince recaptured his 09 form and MacKay finally starts delivering, wow... our midfield looks elite.

No they won't. The second that Lyons is selected we will have a thread asking what Riley has to do to get a shot.

The key issue here is that we have played 4 games - debuted two new players and given games to Kerridge/Brown who before 2013 had played 4 AFL games between them.

Lyons will get a shot. Its only round 5 FFS.

With good reason as well.

I'd hat to meet someone satisfied with 14 years without a premiership and not looking at a way of turning any under performing players over.

Goodwin was Vince's mentor, and set the standards for Vince to follow.

Vince's form has disappeared at the same time that Goodwin has - definitely hasn't worked as hard, and doesn't have the same fitness standards that he did when mentored by Goody.

We all know about Goody's influence on Vince however it shows are real lack of maturity & leadership from Vince who is a senior player to drop his work ethic as soon as his mentor leaves the club, this lack of maturity is evident on game day

Surely if Vince at this stage of his career needs someone to grab him by the collar and say stick and work with me then he is not worthy to be a senior player in our side

The AFC needs to stop living on past performances and move forward with players who are prepared to do the work to build to something special

Harper was on 5aa tonight, and Rowey asked him what Lyons has to do to get a game.

Harper made it clear that Lyons was unlucky, but was next in line and if he kept his form up might even force them to drop a player just because they had to fit Lyons in.

Rowey asked whether there was a knock on Lyons because of a little lack of pace, and Harper's reply was that Diesel Williams wasn't particularly quick but he could read the play and get the ball. In other words, no.

Harper finished by saying that Lyons will definitely play games this year

AFL with its rotations is absolutely not about gut running, Dane Swan became a star because what its about is the opposite.

Its about bursts. Sprint, hit the contest, sprint. Bench. Rest 90 seconds. Repeat.

I do understand where you are coming from but if you put Swan and Hill in a 50 metre sprint, who would win by ten metres?

Swan sprints at his pace and Hill sprints at his but you will see with Swan that he rarely walks but jogs in between his sprints so he can arrive at the next contest.

If we pick players solely on pace we will have a team full of Hills and Pearce and that frightens me, we still need players with elite decision making under pressure ( they always look like they have more time) to get the ball into our forward 50 efficiently

I'd rather Lyons wait a few more rounds and get a run of 4 or 5 games to show his skill than get a game and then be moved out again. Either Vince plays to a level or he burns his last chance and Lyon gets an extended run.

Speed is an advantage. It's an attribute, along with skill, strength, nous, agility, coordination etc etc

There's no sense in overrating it or underrating it. Plenty of great players haven't had genuine pace, and plenty have. It's one more string to your bow and if you've got it, it's fantastic. Like many key footy attributes, it's unable to be markedly improved. Your parents either gave it to you or they didn't.

Genuine, elite, mind blowing speed can, in some cases, make an already great player close to unstoppable. We had a perfect example of that. He won two Norm Smith medals.

It's insulting trivialising posters who are calling for Lyons to be selected. He's a player who at 19 became one of the most important players for his SANFL team and at 20, he leads the SANFL player of the year voting.

FFS this isn't an ordinary 'GET X YOUNGSTER INTO THE TEAM' call.

Hill's main problem is that he completely shuts down in crunch time. It was like he had a collar on in the fourth quarters against Essendon and Richmond on last night. All the pace in the world won't make up for the lack of a clutch gene (a la D Pearce and Mayne as well).

Quick players seem to be natural frontrunners which is a shame.

That is spot on when talking about an individual but a team needs a balance. There has to be some players in a team who possess it. Of course I'm not talking about players that can run but can't play.

Agree with this, at this stage of his career Vince should be the one doing the mentoring.

We tend to hang on far too long to good average players who lack the spark and determination of a younger player who will do anything just to get their next game. We can't keep giving games to mid tier players who are too comfortable with their place in the team.

And that's why I've been keen to get Laird in there and can't understand suggestions he was a possible out this week.

Smith is unfortunately needed back there but having him play off the wing delivering the ball into the forward line and having shots at goal from 55 will make our side stronger.

Smith will be devastating as a winger, him on one flank, Sloane on the other makes us very strong through the middle.

You don't watch sanfl and didn't know Lyons had already debuted so with all due respect how do you make that call?

Let's see..

• One went in the 60s in a weakened draft, the other went in a mini-draft and was rated a top-3 selection for the following draft.
• One can't get a game because he's too slow, the other is rated the second fastest player on our list (behind Dangerfield).
• One has played 3 games after 2 years on the list, the other has played 3 games after 4 rounds on our list.

You seriously want to make the call that Lyons = Crouch. Get real.

Crouch is the second fastest player on our list? You sure about that? I'd say Petrenko,Smith and Jenkins are all faster and I'm sure others would be.
Draft position doesn't always equate to performance.
Lyons performed equally if not better than Crouch has in the SANFL. Crouch's draft ranking gives him greater opportunity to get a spot but that doesn't mean Lyons doesn't deserve a spot.
