Dropping Laird when he is elevated due to an LTI is mad. He did more than enough to be selected again.

We have the chance to get a few games into him while Shaw is out. Let's do it.

Jaensch out Smith in.

Now that I have looked at the stats, they tell a slightly different story, but not that different. 7 of lairds 8 possessions were contested, and he had 5 tackles. Jaensch had a better game statistically, but it certainly didn't appear that way to me by watching it.

I'm amazed jaensch had 14 kicks - his game seemed like a total non event to me. I don't think he was better than Wright at all, I thought wright was quite good, and statistically, their games are very similar.

I think jaensch will be a liability if he lines up in defence next week against the blues. If he plays further up the ground, then fine, but from what I saw, laird offered more from a defensive perspective yesterday.
Watching the game from behind the goals, I watched Jaensch closely & he had a decent game. Kept his opponent quiet & ran off to provide run when needed. There were only a couple of poor players yesterday & Jaensch wasn't one of them. Some posters on here will call Jaensch crap no matter how he performs...

I would like to see Smith and Lyons in... but Im not sure about who to drop...

I think it is more the issue that Smith offers more. Jaensch is holding Smiths spot and when Smith is fully fit he returns.

No doubt Smith is better than Jaensch. However, Jaensch is ahead of Laird, even though he was solid on his debut. Jaensch has also been better than Brown for the last 2 weeks.

No doubt that yesterday's game was Jaench's best out of the 4. This is where the balance of fielding the "best team" vs developing young players comes into it. I thought Brown was pretty good. Laird is only a temporary inclusion until Shaw comes back, I thought he played well and seems exceedingly short-sighted to drop him now as he probably will only get 4 or 5 games this year. Brown needs game time too. These two players will move ahead of Jaensch very quickly and it would be great to get them there asap. Smith makes the team stronger and allows us to play them.

Besides, I don't see Jaensch and Laird competing for positions.

They might do the Porps out and Smith in, in keeping with the theme of older players need to perform. But I think that against Carlton Porps will get the game.

Jaensch, Laird & Brown are very much all competing for a similar role. Important to note that Jaensch takes the majority of kickouts. Without him, it fall to Reilly with no decent backup. Laird will be rightly dropped before Jaensch or Brown. BTW, it's not like Jaensch is an old player.

Shaw & Laird are different types of players. Shaw can play on talls & smalls. Laird can't - not can Jaensch or Brown. Shaw plays a similar role to Otten or Reilly in this respect ... but is miles off getting selected for AFC as injured.

Laird does not have the kick to ever be considered to take the kick outs.

Laird seemed quite speedy and laid 5 tackles. I thought that is exactly what we lacked in our previous games, pace and tackling. My reasoning for selelecting him is to get a few games into him as when the LTI is over he won't have further opportunity. It is our chance now to give him the opportunity to prove himself, he can't do that in one game. Carlton have the mosquito fleet which should give Laird something to defend.

I agree Laird will be dropped 1st, but surely there is merit in allowing him the opportunity to develop while the LTI exists. I don't think he warranted being dropped for the next game.

No Jaensch is not an old player, but younger players have shown more potential. Just my view.

Didn't I read somewhere that Sando wanted Smith to come back via the SANFL or did he play on the weekend? If that's the case I can't see too many changes. I was pretty impressed with Brown, Laird and Crouch. As other's have posted - still don't like Jaensch, who will struggle against the Blues. My bet is maybe only one change...and Porps may be it...Callinan or maybe Lyons to come in?

Smith in for Porps

Kerridge to take Judd
Reilly to run with Murphy and hopefully hurt him the other way.

When has Reilly ever hurt anyone going the other way?

Jaensch for Smith - J hasn't been that bad, but Smith is better.
Porps for Lyons - Let Porps go find form in the SANFL while we give Lyons a DESERVED run.

Smith played for WWT on Friday night I believe. Whether he did enough to show he is ready is another thing.

Given Carlton's fleet of small forwards, probably not a good idea to drop any of our small defenders.

Bring in Smith (if ready) for Porps. Otherwise, Lyons for Porps.

Lyon can then come in the following week for a small defender or Mackay if he doesn't pull his finger out.

I think Martin should come in for Mackay. As much as I like what I've seen on Lyons, I think Martin deserves his shot and the time has come to give him a decent run at it. The club needs to get him out of limbo and decide whether he is a part of the picture or not.

In: Smith, Lyons
Out: Porplyzia, Mackay

Tambling I think would also be ready to play that SUB role, would be perfect for it at the moment. Tough team to pick this week.

FF: Petrenko - Walker - Lyons
HF: Wright - Jenkins - Douglas
C: Sloane - Thompson - Henderson
HB: Reilly - Talia - Laird
FB: Otten - Rutten - Brown
R: Jacobs - Crouch - Dangerfield
B: Smith - Jaensch - Kerridge (Lynch)

D-Mac wont get dropped this week!!
Would love Smith back in, reckon 1 more week for the eagles.
Porps out, Lyons in. Lyon the sub.

No way should Lynch be sub. Needs to play the whole game to provide another marking option.
Smith, Porps (if he stays) or Lyons sub

Depending how long Shaw is out, we may never have to demote Laird. We're allowed one free rookie upgrade after Round 11 regardless of LTIs.

Not sure where to put this so I'll add it here, what's the go with Dangerfield? Kicked 4 against the Dogs which was fantastic but he seemed to play the majority of the game in the forwardline/not in the midfield, so is he carrying some sort of injury? There was the rib knock concern in the pre season which I'm sure he'd have recovered from by now if it was an issue and also a knee problem I've seen floating around on here before our game. He didn't have any strapping and ran fine when he got it, but I can't help but think he isn't 100% with how little midfield time he got.

He picked up a knock in the 3rd or 4th which left him propping and running with a bit of a limp afterward but stayed on the field.

It could be as simple as us giving him a "rest" against the Dogs by playing him in the forwards rather then the midfield for the majority of the match, not too sure.

As for our changes this weekend, I was far from impressed by Mackay's game so I think he'd be in the mix with Porps and Laird for the possible outs depending on how many we wish to bring in. Would like to see Laird given another shot though, although if that was to happen I've got a feeling he'd be the starting sub.

Danger has been carrying a knee injury, but he says it is manageable. It's why he was playing less around stoppages & allowed him to be even more 'dangerous' on the scoreboard, pushing forward.

Really interesting week at selection.

I reckon Smith should and will come in. Next question is what to do about some of the strong performers in the SANFL: Vince, Lyons and Martin all turned in impressive games on the weekend and you could make a case for any of them to come into the side. Personally, I would like to think Lyons is first in line and I really hope Vince isn't brought straight back in.

As for outs, you could imagine any of Laird, Jaensch, Reilly, Porps or Mackay getting the axe for differing reasons. Laird was last in and, contrary to most on here, I didn't think he looked all that comfortable at the level first up. On the other hand, he will no doubt be better for the experience. The board's new whipping boy Jaensch has had a solid season IMO and was in our best dozen or so yesterday, but you could argue that he's keeping Smith's spot warm. Reilly has been awful this season and gives away far too many dumb free kicks in bad areas. Neither Porps nor Mackay have exerted the influence we would have liked this season so far.

The other possibility is Thompson being suspended. I don't think he has any priors, so if he's cited and assuming impact is assessed as low, would need to be graded as reckless to get into suspension territory. I think he will be ok but wouldn't be shocked if he goes.

All in all, I'm expecting just the one unforced change:
In: Smith, (Lyons)
Out: Laird, (Thompson)

Nothing against Laird, I think he will be a very good player and I'd much prefer to see Reilly go, but I just reckon the garden gnome is still a little way off.

Worried is an understatement.

Speed Kills.

Im hoping its a dirty wet Melbourne day, it will mean more contested footy and reduce the effect of Carltons speedy forward line!

It's only Monday I know, but its forecast to be 25 degress and sunny on Saturday afternoon.
