Not looking at his touches on a stats sheet. Watching what i see him do defensively and Hurn was the only person hitting targets at hbf. Most others were bombing it down the line
Wellingham hit targets just as consistently and also provided pace and run from the back. I think Murtimer will go for Cripps but it's not a bad thing as he will take the experience back to EP and be able to work up to another level

That's more tackles than Shep, lecras, Barrass, Wellingham, Hurn, Mutimer, Gaff & Duggan..

25 pressure acts was the highest in the side this week. For a guy that supposedly jogs around the ground doing nothing defensively- that's a very decent return.
If we're basing a players performance on pressure stats alone then we're in trouble. Everyone agrees he's reasonably ok defensively, despite laying very few tackles, but to me that's not acceptable, he did f*k all else. He needs to provide something around the ground. With a good mark, ok pace and creative disposal, he should be providing a target between the 50 arcs.

Just the same as basing a players performance off pure tackle stats?

He's always been good at finishing off and scoring cheap goals. (albeit he was quieter on the weekend in that regard) What has improved significantly is the work off the ball and being involved when he doesn't have it. Which is pleasing.

Bombers scored 17 goals against Geelong.
Bombers laid 81 tackles.
Geelong did not man up in defence and left too much spaces to the bombers.
Are these the issues we should pay attention to?

Geelong's midfield tackle numbers were incredibly low, it was like there was no pressure on the Essendon mids. That's where we have to be better, and we are a pretty good defensive side. Priddis will get 10+ tackles easily

We are not particularly high in tackles count in general. We have 58 the last game against the Bulldogs. Pressures have to be applied by all players not just relying on Priddis and Shuey!

Because it means there's more space to cover with the web, which means more gaps, which means teams find it easier to get through

The web is the the same size. When web is set up it does NOT spread over entire width of ground. It's usually about 60m wide and then it moves with ball.

Given we get hammered in contested possession, it's not the web.

No changes. It's very tempting to play Nelson and Cripps if fit given it's being played at Docklands.

Nelson on a shorter ground can be really damaging and Cripps brings the type of defensive pressure that is really effective on smaller grounds.

Do you imply this is the reason why we are so poor in the wide ground like MCG as we are not guarding the wing at all ?

I was at the game and thought Hill's defensive efforts were great. He's probably the most unfairly scapegoated player in our team.
An underrated part of Hill's game is his defensive efforts in the air. A timely spoil in the forward half when the opposition are positioned to attack is one of the easiest ways to get a shot on goal.

Naitanui and Kennedy are also excellent at this.

Would suspect that we go into the game unchanged.

Those who are coming back from injuries need to do so through East Perth.

The club rates Cripps very highly as far as I can tell so if he gets through training this week he'll play

Nelson and Petrie probably don't have that luxury and are likely to have to come back through EP

Slight tangent. Looking forward to next year when the broadcasters can release the GPS stats of the top 5 players from each team. Would love to see the miles covered. At a guess our top 2 would be Gaff and Masten, then I'd assume Lecras and Cripps near the top with some of our fitter mids. JK often plays 100% TOG so he may be up there.

Im watching the replay to see this myself, because I sure as shit didn't see it the first time round
Hill did a lot of defensive running and pressure acts. He certainly wasn't ball watching not running both ways. Plenty of 1%ers that add up.

Who will do better?

A player coming back from injury without match fitness?

No chances this week.

Give those injured guys another week to build form on the training track or in the WAFL
