Changes v Bombers

I think against the Dons we will need more midfield run. Dont want to run out of legs against this team.

Out: Maric
In: Reilly

What exactly has McKernan done to warrant selection?

Yeah, nothing. He shouldn't be seen in the Tricolours this year, when he clearly isn't ready.

The Bombers lost Bellchambers to a knee today, means they will have to bring in Lazycock as second ruck, or rely on Ryder to play 100% game time there and bring in a small.

Question is, do we want to stay tall or go shorter?

Maric is the only possible out, Petrenko and Reilly the only possible ins.

Congrats on the win yesterday guys, looking forward to a very even contest on Sunday.

If Taylor Walker doesnt get rising star this week, the system is a joke. Will be an absolute superstar one day! (im sure you all know that already tho)

I would think that Craig will retain the structure that did so well against a good side in Hawthorn today.

The one area that would be under review IMO is the ruck.

Griffin had a hamstring strain - did he play this week, and if so how did he go?? Does he deserve promotion?

That might mean that Maric retains his spot in spite of his poor game today.

The only other alternatives would be to ruck either Sellar or McKernan, although they are genuinely that little bit short to be a regular ruckman IMO.

However, if Maric is not getting off the ground then Sellar/McKernan more than make up 2cms by their athletic ability.
I personally would like either Sellar/McKernan to come in against Essendon particularly because i think they offer more around the ground.

Why in hell would we drop a ruckman for an onballer. Our football has been the best in the past 2 weeks its been all year. Playing Tippet at FF has made a major difference to the way we play. Our midfielders have actually had the confidence to carry the ball forward and deliver into the forward line rather than kicking sideways and backwards while other players run forward to create targets. Sure Tipp hasnt taken 30 marks and kicked 20 goals but he has made a huge difference to the the way we have played. Stop talking all this crap about playing 3 ruckmen. We play 2 ruckmen and a FF, just like every other team in the competition.

The only reason we would make any changes this week is if we thought Sellar or Mckernan would ruck better than Maric. I have seen neither of them play so I will leave that to someone who has.

Tippett is a better ruckman than a forward. Spent the majority of the game forward yesterday for very poor returns. I Don't believe that he is the reason we are playing better these last two weeks or that he somehow 'straightens us up'. If our mids were kicking long to a contest in the forward line yesterday because he was up there, it was with misplaced confidence. He not only failed to take a single mark, he also failed to bring the ball to ground to advantage. The Tippett love on this board is blinkered to what the player actually does on the field.
I love the way he competes in the ruck and scraps for the ball. He looks likely to be a very handy player in the future, possibly a gun, but he has a way to go to be a gamebreaker.

Why would we drop anyone this week? I would love to see Reilly back in as I don't beleive he should've been dropped to start with... I think both our rucks will struggle to keep up with Ryder around the ground, Maybe we need super ruck (Tippett) to ruck the game and the other two to play up forward?

So its the football fairys that have us playing more direct football is it? So how many Hawthorn players was Tippet competing against in the marking contests which resulted in him not taking a single mark. The football fairys also gave Walker the space to kick 5 goals. For christs sake, they had Buddy Franklin on him at one stage, could you not see that having Franklin at FB was good for Adelaide. Cmon.

As much as I like the structure of going with 3 rucks and Tippet spending more time in the forwardline can we really justify keeping Maric in the team when he provides so little?

Maric's stats from the weekend:

3 Kicks
3 Handballs
Total of 6 Disposals (5 Uncontested) with 67% Efficiency
1 Tackle
0 Marks
<10 Hitouts (Tippet had the 2nd most for the Crows with 10, not sure how many Maric actually had)

All this from 51% TOG.

Really disappointing from a player who we know can do much better.

I dont disagree with your comment regarding Maric, only to say that we can sometimes be blinded by reading too much into a players individual stats.
We won the game against the reigning premiers. It says more about our structure and team performance than some of the drivel people conjure up about individual statistics.

he had 9 hitouts

The team played well, leave it how it is. Maric is the only possible change id look at making, but only if griffin is fit.

No change.

But someone needs to put a rocket up Marics arse. :thumbsu:

Yep Im with you noddy.

Maric - give him a rocket with an ultimatum
Moran - give him some speed;) [ of the make me do things quicker variety]
Tippet - give him some training wheels so he stays upright

Why was Reilly dropped by the way?

That would keep Mark Blake in Geelongs team by the way.

Unless it's a Maric for Griffin swap, I'd go in unchanged. We should not only go with a structure that's working, but also exploit Essendon's depleted ruck stocks. You would think having 3 rucks to rotate on Ryder would give us a huge advantage, having said that though I think Ryder rucked on his own against Collingwood for most of the game and did well.

Can I also go on record as someone who doesn't really rate Symes, to say that he thoroughly deserves to retain his spot after his performances the last couple of weeks.

And to young Dogga, you've come good the last couple of weeks - back to the form of '08 :thumbsu: Keep it up son!

Franklin was moved to FB because Bock was towelling him up, not because Tippett was causing any particular angst for the Hawks coaching staff. A return of 5 possessions and zero marks is not good. ]f it were anyone else than Tip, people would be calling for his head.
Besides, what does it matter how many Tippett was competing against? He's a great pack mark isn't he?

You are right. Our current structure is not working and we will never win a game playing such an underperforming dud at FF.

Sigh:rolleyes:

Great debate re Tippett.

The Tip-love is over the top, largely based on potential, though he has had some encouraging performances and cameos.

As an individual he was poor yesterday. Didn't look threatening, ruckwork was ho-hum as it was last week (people are seriously over-rating his rucking, why?), and struggled to get possession.

But i tell you what, he did make a big difference to the structure! Unfortunately for him he is getting crunched in the packs but on numerous occasions he was outnumbered and brought the ball to ground, did some tough body work even if he should keep his feet more. By keeping it in and making a contest it led to team goals even if he didnt get a stat for it.

Neither Moran or Maric for varying reasons can do this up forward. Unfortunately Maric cannot ruck in the centre very well in current form. So I'd keep the 3 talls, allowing Stevens to roam, and replace Maric with someone who can play 50-60% TOG, pinch hit in ruck and be a big yet mobile forward target. We'd be relying on rookies but given it's the 22nd spot in the team and allowing our preferred structure then why not!

McKernan is not ready, no way. Sure he's got some size to him for a young guy, but he's still developing his game and becoming accustomed to not being the biggest guy on the ground. I think a game for him now would be counter-productive to his development. I'm not even sure if NC would know what he would do with him just at this stage. Chuck in him the forward pocket and hope for the best?

Griffin looked fairly rough physically on the TV, can't imagine him coming in.

Petrenko looked great up forward for the Eagles, but pretty average on the wing. I've always thought his best short-term prospect is as a FP and thought he might come in this week, especially after that goal off the side of the boot at a crucial stage of the game. But then Knights goes and has another ripper game, so maybe not.

Reilly had an awesome game last week, hard luck missing out this week and was this week's emergency.

Good chance Maric/Moran misses out, moreso for structure than form. They are still both young and developing and it won't hurt either of them too much playing them in the SANFL. Essendon's ruck stocks are weak/non-existent, so there's no need to overload in that area, otherwise their runners will take us off our feet. So a small in for a tall is a strong possibility.

If Maric/Moran misses out, I'm seeing Reilly back.
