Cupboard is bare now. We need to bring in another forward. Who? Clarke? If he destroys Subiaco today guys, big if, id let him play first ruck and see how Griff goes in the Apeness role.

Out: Apeness, Suban
In: Morabito, Grey

Don't necessarily think Apeness will be replaced with another tall as we were top heavy in forward anyway. Clarke's neither an improvement there or in the ruck - but a solid game tomorrow might earn him a spot anyway.

From everything I remember from Suban tonight he got pinged for HTB a few times, smothered off the ball and did his rugby thing a bunch of times.

Don't need to say what's been said ad infinitum - but sheeeish compared to the classy agility shown by some of the youngsters it's getting beyond embarrassing now.

This.
Hopefully Mora has a good game today, it'd be great to see him back and the time is right.

I really don't see what the MC see in Suban. They mustn't rate Grey very highly if they're putting Suban in front of him though.

Hey meima maybe its time to let go of the idea that Ross is inflexible and stubborn with his team selections. I've criticised him a fair bit in the past and particularly last year for this but this year everything is on the table. We've seen him relegate DeBoer and Mzungu, Suban has been dropped as has Sutty, 2 players that he has persisted with beyond what some consider reasonable. He's brought Apeness back after 2 years of injury with only 4 WAFL matches. As Ross himself has said a bit recently, "I deal in reality" so when the reality was that we were undefeated after 10 last year he had some justification for keeping in players that were getting the job done.
The reality is we are trying to win games of footy and that players such as Suban and Mayne are playing ok footy. Both did some disappointing things last night but they both did some good things too. Suban was hard around the ball and did some nice things linking up play while Mayne seems to be marking strongly again and creating opportunity around goal.

Personally I'd like to see either Uber or Morabito get a start for Apeness. Hasleby said on radio yesterday morning he things Morabito is a couple of weeks ago from getting a gig and I hope this is true while Uber has been showing enough in the WAFL to suggest he could be a find and this is the time to see if he can show that potential at the next level.
Nice post.

To be honest the constant carping about Suban and Mayne plus a few other things is about as boring as I have ever seen on this board.

I'm attracted to the idea of bringing in Uebergang. Seems to me Mayne benefited greatly from an extra tall in Apeness. Uebergang doesn't look a pack crashing type but he might add a different dimension. Give him a chance to visit the family too. Clarke doesn't add a different dimension at the moment, unfortunately, and his knee problems are not going away anytime soon

I don't wish for us to get carried away with our structure. We beat a non competitive Bombers.

Thinking having 3 talls and that's what released Mayne and that's what brought our smalls into the game is a bit of wishful thinking. The Bombers were deplorable at best.

I'm actually a bit concerned about the exuberance for Apeness. He did little and struggled to get to many contests and this despite owning the ball in our forward line.

Even a hobbling Clarke would've done what Apeness did and that's who is likely to come back in and rest forward.

So my buddy had 6 scoring shots (3.2) and was involved in a few other goals as well.

His off the ball work and leading has been pretty solid as well, seems like he's adapting to the new game plan.

How do we feel about a new contract for him?/fighting for him to stay? From everything I know about the Belmont boy he wouldn't want to leave home unless the writing was on the wall.

Not disagreeing that the Bombers were noncompetitive. But Mayne has been playing better the last couple of weeks because (IMO) tabs has lifted. Apeness did some good things - Ross commented in his press conference that he brought the smalls into the game, and I reckon it helped Mayne as well. Let's face it, we've known for over 2 years now that Mayne is practically ineffective as a second tall - it's been obvious since Freo lost Kepler and Clarke/Griffin have not recaptured their 2013 form.

Losing Kepler is possibly the worst thing to have happened to this proud club.

Structure-wise I think Apeness was brought in as the second ruck / forward not as a third forward. I agree that he didn't do anything in the ruck, he did look a bit slow at times but I thought he had a presence close to goal as Lyon said in his press conference. Our problem is that we have rucks that are out of form and are liabilities as any other position (particularly as a third forward - the don't tackle and chase enough), and we have forwards that can't chop out in the ruck. The choice is now:

Clarke - best next ruck even with the issues but is a liability in the forward line
Smith - Rucks okay, could go back or forward but experience is based on WAFL and is a rookie
Hannath - second best next ruck, can sit in the forward line but is a liability with his speed and around the ground
Morabito - They could swing him forward but he has been playing back and he can't ruck so doesn't address the need particularly well
Uebergang - could play forward or back, not tested in the ruck AFAIK but I can't seem him being ready yet.

Reality is it will most likely be Clarke.

Tabs is definitely building. Mayne should always play as a lead up, he would've got the same opportunities last night even if Apeness didn't play.

Bombers were tripe and when players like Suban have 25m in space they're suppose to hit targets 15m away and running at you.

Id like Morabito to come in for Ape. However not a like for like replacement, and I am keen on playing 6 man forward line, so not entirely sold on that option.
Suban was decent, however, with Barlow having success in that run with role that he normally is used in (to a lesser extent) I can't see a reason for him staying in the side. As such the ideal changes for me would be
OUT: Suban, Ape
IN: Morabito, Langdon
Unfortunately, I don't see 6 fit forwards to play right now. Pav, Tabs, Mayne (spot still questionable when Yarran/Bennell fit) Ballantyne (another in question)
Walters is playing midfield, but can count as a forward, theres 5. But Weller plays his best footy higher up the ground, just watch the last quarter to see how valuable he is up there. Langdon is the only real forward we have to bring in ...

My prefs...

Out: Ape, Suban, D Pearce
In: Hughes, Langdon, Hughes

Will it happen?...unlikely
We probably won't have Hughes take two spots in the side. Mainly because he's injured, but he's also only one person

I think we could bring in uber and morra. Sounds like they both had good games today. Can we upgrade 2 rookies with our injuries ? This is the perfect game to try these 2. In all honesty who cares if we lose. Better than trying them against hawthorn

We've got 3 guys on the LTI so we can upgrade 3 rookies

Oopss. My bad. Cheers for the pick up!

Was thinking Grey...

Forgot Hughes was injured hence his obvious absence from Peel today...

Bring in Mora then :)

To be honest there will be not much different between grey and suban. The only thing is grey is younger got more upside to improve.
Not even close buddy! They are both hard nuts, but Grey also has pace and evasive skills which unfortunately Suban does not have. His kicking is not great, but he is working one it.

As you say, there is a lot more upside to Grey, the sooner we start giving him an extended run in the seniors the better.
