Trouble with picking Thommo is he probably won't be able to run with his opponent. The in and under stuff yes, but he has to be accountable to an opponent as well. You also get the clangers and turnovers as well.

I see that Sa robbing Peter to pay Paul

What's more important being a soft arse team like we are for substituting it for a bit of pace

Hampton looked sloooooow last night

I thought he was meant to be quick?

Refuses to run forward. Just dances around on the spot until he can handball off to someone else. Either drop him or put him on a forward or back flack. Either way the midfield experiment is over.

If anyone thinks Menzel is going to make it as an AFL player they are kidding themselves

He tried his absolute hardest last night and ended up with 11 possessions and about 4 shanks under no pressure by foot

And people think Wigg is bad ! At least he will get it 20 times + and get better with games

Menzel was at his best last night in terms of effort and still sub par by plenty

I think that's a pretty simplistic assessment of the situation. The guy's confidence is obviously shot and clearly doesn't feel like he belongs in the side. His issue is clearly not effort, he put his body on the line, worked hard and laid some great tackles. Trouble is he's an instinctual player who's too focused on staying out of the way of Eddie, Tex and Lynch, instead the of backing his instincts.

Talk about mismanaging Wigg, we have miss managed Menzel as well. He either needed to be backed in from the start of the season for 5-10 games, or when dropped given a good 5-10 games to find a heap of the footy and demand selections. Instead we dropped him after a decent game against GWS, then elevated him a week later, only to drop him again and reelevate him 2 weeks after that. For a player clearly lacking confidence, that's the worst thing they could do.

If Menzel can gain some confidence again, he'll be a gun, whether he does this or not, I have no idea, but I'm not writing him off based on him clearly lacking confidence, not talent.

If Wigg doesn't get a shot next week he'd be within his rights to tell the club to **** off

Thats probably fair enough, he's been hard done by, but quite frankly I've seen him play maybe 8-10 times now and I couldn't really give 2 hoots if he walked out of he club this week.

I'd be playing him ahead of Mackay at present, but there's absolutely nothing special about his game that suggests to me he'll develop into anything but an average AFL player. His supposed weapon was his kicking and that's basically gone from unspectacular, but no doubt safe, for his first couple of years, to woeful this year.

He's every bit in the same class as Grigg, Wright, Symes, Schmidt... gun SANFL player, but likely only average AFL player. I hope he proves me wrong, but the evidence to date suggests the club thinks along the same lines as myself.

Out: False hopes

Love this reply! Succinct and spot-on.

Edit: Pyke and selectors need to go through the list, one by one, and identify the players who'll play on AFL Game Day as if their lives depend on it, regardless of age and experience.
Scott Thompson is too good and is wasted in the SANFL --- he'd give Sloane's taggers some curry, to begin with.

Our problems stem 100% from our midfield as it stands. From the coach right thru. We must get a top line mid this trade period, or its gonna be a waste of the rest of our current squad talent like Sloane, Walker, Laird etc.

Good news is that we're 8 games in and Campo is yet to be extended. Hopefully we've got enough cash to burn the balance of Doc's contract also.

Just adding that one to the list of excuses. It's quite a long list now.

Its like saying Tambling will deliver for the Crows when we got him years ago.

New environment, injury free and Menzel is at this stage of his career failing for the AFC.

Completely agree. B Crouch was absolute puke (for the 2nd week running). He did have a goal assist though (to Betts for our first goal of the game). Yayyy Brad. His footy IQ is disturbingly low. Has regressed sharply.

Despite a poor game he still got it 26 or so times. While we're getting beaten in the middle that's half the battle. His problem right now is that he's getting rid of the ball as if it's a game of hot potato. Needs to calm down, take a few tackles and even get caught HTB a couple of times. Needs some composure, is presently showing as much composure in traffic as Mackay.

And that is the common double standards approach of many on this board to this topic

At least you've seen Wigg play a few times so I respect your opinion

To me Wigg showed more in that JLT game against Richmond than anything Menzel has shown at AFL or SANFL level while he's been with us

Now Wigg won't be a star but he may be a best 22 player if he takes his chances , if he's given his chance

If Ogilvie picks someone in the 2nd round then he performs at SANFL in his 3rd season and the AFL side does not perform I'd say he's entitled to a debut at the very least

How do we get away from a soft arse effort without bringing in any tough nuts, the lack of pace will be outweighed by someone who wont be pushed around and out muscled by the opposition

The players we have need to be given a rocket and pull their fingers out.

Greenwood will give us a hard edge.

If the game was just played at the clearances then fair enough, but it's not. His opponent will have a field day running off him.

Out ....Poor execution especially with our handball as we try to run though the middle. Execution was extremely poor. How many times did we kick into the man on the mark. Over kicking or under kicking resulting with turn overs and goals. Trying to play on at all costs and it certainly did cost us last night. Why play on when instead of steadying and kicking the ball forward. We just handball and not to advantage. I will say that when we do get through using our run and handball it looks great but 9 times out of ten we stuff it up.

In .... Now that our game plan has been exposed do we need a new plan. It appears that we don't know how to tweak our current plan during a game so is a new plan necessary. If so then perhaps some new players may need to be considered. I have been begging for Greenwood to be given a shot but we also need to look closely at Wigg, Doedee, Beech and Gore. If we don't manage these guys there is a chance (like this week) that we bring them all in at one time and that wouldn't be any good either.

That's the thing. He's good 1v1 in the air as a defender. But that's it. He is a liability in any other defensive situation. He's not an intercept marker, so he can't really support our other defenders in the way you'd want a third tall to perform. And he can't play on anyone but a tall slow forward.

Sure, as a forward he took a few nice marks when the game was done. But he's even worse than Jenkins at applying defensive pressure in our forward line, and that's saying something. He is a marking target and that's it. Jenkins, when he's playing to a decent standard, isn't much of a marker but provides targets in other ways such as leading, outrunning, Joe the Goose, etc. Otten as a forward didn't do shit against North
The funny thing is, Otten used to be a great intercept marker or at least someone that would come in and spoil it in a contest in his first season. Last night I dare say he was focused on Watts so didn't really do that. I do think it is harder to do that now with the speed the game is played, leaving your man is a huge risk as it really exposes you if you're unable to stop that contest.

Fair points on him not applying defensive pressure, not sure if it's less than Jenkins and I don't think we get much from either on that front. RE the North game, none of our forwards did. The ball didn't go forward in the first quarter really, no one scored. DT wise, Jenkins had just 10 points to HT, Otten was on 31. At some point in the 3rd (think towards the end) Otten was in the backline. So yeah, Otten as a forward didn't do shit against North but who did really?

This is the team I feel should play next week:

Brown Hartigan Lever
Smith Talia Hampton
Atkins Laird Milera
Beech Otten Lynch
Betts Walker Menzel

Ruck: Sauce, Sloane, M Crouch
Int: Douglas, B Crouch, Wigg, Greenwood

Out: Cameron, Mackay, Jenkins, Kelly
In: Lever, Beech, Greenwood, Wigg

Hampton to half back with Laird to the guts, Menzel given a chance with an actual role to play, Milera stays in coz Cameron needs a spell. Those in red lucky to stay in. A touch top heavy up forward - could rotate Beech and Lynch and rotate a small on the other flank instead.
