I think we are seeing the results of wasted draft picks used on recycled players such as menzel and hampton that could have been used on midfielders. Whoever decided to trade in menzel I hope is no longer with the club. Our first round pick from a couple of years ago in doedee has not been sighted which is unusul for a club. He may turn into something but lets see him bloody well play. I feel our recruiters have made a lot of speculative picks recently and midfielders should have been the priority in the draft or trading one in should have been the course of action. The club put all their eggs in the Clangerfield basket and has failed to properly plan prior to his departure which I believe the club knew 18 months out.

Doedee, whilst being a bit speculative, was obviously still their highest rated player at that pick. He had a limited preseason in year 1 but played some extremely promising football in the SANFL. He's had another limited preseason due to knee tendinitis and has only just returned and was apparently among our best 2 or 3. He's tracking pretty well as long as there's no ongoing issues with this tendinitis. Hopefully he reaches the minimum fitness levels required for AFL selection soon and we see him get his crack. But it's well early to be worried about it.

You have plenty of good points I would have knight in if he was playing well but he isn't and deserves to go back to the twos to gain form with Greenwood deserving a crack and the way JJ is playing he may aswell be running water for the team if he needs to be on the field where otten is far more effective

Knight was playing well before injury. Comes back and plays a Dmac type of game and gets instantly dropped. Same has happened to Menzel and I wouldnt be surprised if he is used as the scapegoat again this week.

I dont understand why the weight of expectation is so disproportionate between these young guys and the experienced schmucks who are allowed to ride out their poor form in the seniors. Dropping a young guy after one poor game achieves nothing as far as a)sending a message, or b) playing the kid into form and/or instilling a sense of confidence. Should be 3 games minimum or else it is nothing more than a gutless copout.

Thommo is most definitely not the answer. Look at our midfield rotations.
I shake my head when I see Brouch,Mrouch and Hampton all take position for bounces. Last year we had Mrouch, Lyons and Thommo contesting the same way. What is wrong with that picture? Why dont we have a quick outsider in there? Someome who can run and carry? Why has CC been taken out of the mix? Why cant we throw Smith or Laird in for a few more?

We have a shit midfield because it is a poorly managed midfield.

Interesting point you make regarding Talia. I remember in the Sando years thinking how often Talia was one out against the best opposition forward at the top of the square and he either won it or neutralised it. Was always thinking thank gosh for him. Is he deliberately playing further up the ground or opposition dragging him away or am I just not watching that aspect? Would have saved a few goals Saturday night if he was the defender in some of those contests.
Think they are using Talia differently this year as they felt Hartigan had full back covered.

I don't think this luxury exists any longer.

Ins- Greenwood, Lever, Knight
Outs- Hampton, Jenkins, Mackay

Lynchy needs to pull his finger out, and quickly otherwise Beech can come in to replace him next week.

I want to see some forced changes for some under performing players. I have a soft spot for Hampton and would like to keep him in but maybe put him on a wing. Mackay has been invisible for a few weeks now and needs to be placed with Knight.

Greenwood needs to be played as he has some mongrel and spirit. Play him in Hampton's role for a few games.
Jenkins needs to go harden up in the SANFL but if they don't have the balls to drop him they need to drop Otten to get our tall/small balance right.
Lever to come back in will help our defense immeasurably.
How long do we continue carrying Brad Crouch?
Would like to give Gallucci a go too.

OUT

Kelly - Not good enough, maybe we COULD throw him into a tagging role. But not this week.

Jenkins- He's a better player than Otten but he's a shell of his 2016 self. Send him back to SANFL for confidence, Otten forward.

Cameron- He's injured, so don't play him. Simple.

Menzel- Injured.

IN

Lever- If he's fit he plays, if not Jenkins gets a reprieve. He is crucial.

Gallucci- Play him in the Cameron role. Tell him to run and tackle, anything else is a bonus.

Greenwood- Time to find out whether he is worth persisting with. Maybe push Smith upfield a bit too for a look

Doedee- Maybe too early after an interrupted start but he is a better player than Kelly IMO.

None of these are likely to happen, and maybe 4 changes are too many. Mackay also gets saved due to my 'injury' list, if both Menzel and CC play then he needs to go. Hampton is also close to the drop, looks totally out of confidence. Brouch doesn't learn how to defend in the SANFL, it's pointless sending him back.

I am not normally one who frets over selection but somethings gotta give. 1 week I can understand the 'give them a chance to respond' theory, but not after 2.

My team:

Backs:

Talia needs to swap with Hartigan. He is the best full back we've got and under pressure will hold his nerve. He must take the best key position player.

It's also time for Lever to step up. Make lever the CHB. He's a great defender and decision maker and a born leader. Let him direct play from that position.

Make Hartigan the third defender. Release the pressure on the guy and maybe let him use his speed and size as a weapon.

Doedee, the season is still young the time is right.

Brown, Talia, Hartigan
Doedee, Lever, Smith

Mids:

Cameron needs to become a permanent part of this midfield and Mackay must be banished forever. We also need a big body and some fresh ideas. We're clearly one of the slowest starting sides in the competition and I believe this is all about the midfield. When I look at our starting centre square midfielders in Sloane, mrouch and Douglas, I don't exactly see an explosive group, buy more work horses. How about we try different combinations at the beginning and let the workhorses takeover when the sting is out and the opposition are tired?

Cameron, Brouch, Hampton
Follow: Jacobs, Sloane Laird

Forwards:
The least of our worries really.

Lynch, Walker, milera
Menzel, JJ, betts

Interchange: greenwood, mrouch, Knight, Douglas

Douglas has been serviceable and I can't fault his endeavour, however it is time to take a back seat. Surely we've learnt from the Thompson experience and understand that the torch must be passed when it is still burning strong, not when it is just about out of gas.

Full team:

Brown, Talia, Hartigan
Doedee, Lever, Smith
Cameron, Brouch, Hampton
Lynch, Walker, Milera
Menzel, JJ, betts

Follow: Jacobs, Sloane Laird

Interchange: Greenwood, Mrouch, Knight, Douglas

Out: Atkins, Otten, Kelly, Mackay
In: Doedee, Greenwood, Lever, Knight

Replace JJ with Otten and I think you are spot on - please email to Pyke. It's a risk moving Laird from HBF but one i feel the club is compelled to take given how insipid our inside mids are looking (Sloane excepted).

Interestinmg youre not rewarding Wigg or Beech who has no doubt played far better than Galluci and Doedee, and going for a gut feel, thats what has put us in trouble with someone like Jenkins , Mackay , Menzel

To retain or gain a spot you need to perform, your picking on gut feel, which is what pretty much is happening at the moment go with good results, I said Thommo but idealy I would like to see him pull out a 30 plus possesion game in the two's which he will do, no one else has the ability in the two's to do that apart from Bcrouch and he got promoted for it.

Can you remind me the last decent game JJ played, no gold passes as far as I am concerned you may think otherwise

Reread my post - in the quote I'm saying to drop Jenkins and keep Otten - I agree Jenkins has played terrible the last couple of rounds and should not receive a gold pass...I've been consistent about this for two weeks.

In terms of the last good game Jenkins played it was round 1.

I wonder whose idea it was for a 4 year deal, ours or his? Got the feeling he knew we were in a delicate position with losing players and used it to his advantage. That being the case he's pretty much ensured he's selected otherwise we have deadwood for 4 years.

It feels like we've been talking about his 4 year extension for more than 4 years. Did he get a 4 + 4 option that's been excercised ?

We need intensity, Wigg doesn't provide that. He's a vanilla-type like Lyons, which is disappointing. I did think of bringing him in, he probably needs a shot to see if he has something.

Doedee and Gallucci play with said intensity, and it's not a bad thing picking with gut feel. The selectors haven't done that either, they've picked on reputation. I've also gone like for like in many instances.

And would you bet your house Mackay will?

Nope, when it comes to dropping players, unless they've played under 50 games, i have no confidence in the AFC dropping anyone.

Changes I proposed were based on my own opinions and what I personally would consider realistic after 2 bad performances.

I certainly don't think anyone senior will be dropped, but if I go through the list and try and identify which player I think has contributed the least over a long period of time, it's Mckay.

At the end of the day we are all just stating our own thoughts on the matter, no doubt the AFC see things totally differently and likely only forced changes again will be made, however many people call for JJ, Lynch, or Walker to be dropped.

Longest four years in history.

From memory it happened mid-season or even before the mid-point of the 2014 season.

So we had most of 2014 to rue the deal and wonder what the hell the club was thinking and then the actual deal started the following season.

Doedee and Galluci play with intensity are you kidding, Doedee will be a liability until he gets his kicking right now, it needs to improve and will get knocked off the ball to easily and Galluci is learning and is too far out of the game ATM we have a problem with getting out muscled and you want to bring in light weights , Beech and Wigg clearly deserve a crack with what they are showing wate of time bringing in players that actually could send us backwards

Had a bit more of a thought about selections.

Out: Mackay (delisted), Jenkins (injured), Cameron (injured), Lynch (omitted), Kelly (omitted)
In: Greenwood, Knight, Lever, Beech, Doedee

B Brown - Talia - Lever
HB Smith - Hartigan - Laird
C Douglas - Greenwood - Milera
HF Knight - Walker - Atkins
F Menzel - Otten - Betts
R Jacobs - Sloane - M. Crouch

I Hampton - Doedee - Beech - B. Crouch

His kicking is better than Kellys and we seem to have no issues picking him.

Wigg is also a lightweight, I've never seen him lay a decent tackle. In fact I've barely seen him try
