I was under the belief Poholke would get a go before Galluci
Beech, Poholke, Gallucci and Greenwood have all been previously named on the extended interchange/emergency list. There really wasn't anything to indicate that Poholke was ahead of Gallucci, or that Gallucci was ahead of Poholke.

David Mackay (omitted)

I disagree - I don't think it's chicken/egg at all. Last year we wondered why Wigg didn't get a shot. Now we have a bit more information, and it's looking increasingly likely that they just didn't rate him.

Last year we thought he was the best performed of our SANFL players at the time. We've always known though that the KPIs the club uses to assess performance are different to those used by BF supporters - who mostly focus on disposals, DE, and (sadly) DT/SC scores. Based on BF's KPIs, Wigg looked a certainty. Based on the club's KPI's, it's a different story entirely.

Pyke has shown a ruthless streak when it comes to players that he doesn't think are good enough. Grigg & Lyons are gone, and CEY barely played a game in 2016. Wigg is another player in this group - a BF favourite, who just doesn't (and didn't) cut the mustard in the eyes of the coach.

They clearly think Gallucci has talent. He was a 1st round draft pick, and he's been a regular selection on the emergency list for the last 2 months. They clearly rate him on potential, because he really doesn't have many runs on the board yet at SANFL level. The last player they backed in like this was Milera, and they rarely get it wrong when fast tracking a youngster. I'll back them on that basis.

Greenwood has consistently been our best SANFL player this year, and he has the mongrel/attitude/competitive spirit that Brouch (in particular) appears to lack. I like his selection. I like it a lot.

Meh.. that was a month ago. Greenwood has consistenly outperformed him since then, and thoroughly deserves his opportunity.

I think Beech's upgrade was a reward for effort, rather than a likely team selection. Unlike Greenwood, I don't think his ceiling is high enough to make him an AFL player with a long career. Beech can maybe feel a bit hard done by, but selecting Greenwood ahead of him was the right decision to make.

Don't always agree with everything you write, but appreciate the effort you go to to step through your thought process. On this occasion completely agree

We fans (bigfooty + others) tend to get overly excited about stats from SANFL games while most of us rarely get an opportunity to actually watch the games. Most footage I've seen of Wigg has been highlights packages from the club chucked in amongst the odd channel 7 broadcast. If we went purely by stats Petrenko, Summerton, Martin etc should all be 300 game AFL players.

I had deleted a line saying Beech was given the upgrade to see if his attitude changed ie did he work harder because he was closer or did he relax? Greenwood seems to have continued his trajectory.

I am a Galluci fan, said in the JLT he should get games, so its not a case of Wigg or Galluci for me.

Well Round 1, Poholke was on extended bench!

It was more a judgment made on physical attributes, thought Poholke looked more physically "acceptable" lol

But can Mackay handle big games? Or playing well for more than 6 games a year?

Will that be any different from Menzel, hampton, Milera, Kelly, Seedsman like I said previously Mackay will play whilst in form as will those players , Miler should develop into a more consistent player as should Gov and CC who ATM all are incosistent, as for the others they are 20-25 players who only get a gig when playing well none are far better than the other as when out of form they may aswell be playing A6 for all Im concerned

They've all been named on the extended bench, or the emergency list, at least once. There's no difference between an "extended bench" and the "emergency list", given that the "extended bench" just becomes the "emergency list" when the Sunday games' team lists are updated on Friday afternoon.

Not necessarily. If Hampton goes to the outside and performs and so do Thor and Gooch, then there's no reason he can't be retained. But if Thommo gets past him, I agree, he's done, not sure about Poholke though. A club needs at least 2 solid depth midfielders. Right now it looks like all we have is Wigg and Poholke plus a recovering CEY and there's 2 guys ahead of them who are debuting, so are entirely unproven. If we trade in a B+ mid, which is likely, he might be in a bit of trouble. Only Thommo is a certain delisting, CEY probable and it gets harder from there. Actually, thinking about potential delistings and given he's not named as an emergency, he's probably gone at year's end.

This years draftees Im not concerned with I would like to see something next year and a bit in the SANFL this year. Milera is developing nicely although needs to find more of the footy, Wigg, Beech should be pushing for selection but it appears that Galluci infront of them would be a kick in the teeth as both have performed far better in the two's so saying this I dont believe the selectors are rating them. Thommo is gone he was lucky to get paid this year thats just because he is an old man now, he was a break glass option and it appears that way. ROB needs game time and Dear looks on the outer, they could take sympathy on CEY but he appears finished also. Doedee seriously needs to get on the track or patience will be lost and improve both his kicking and his defense on tightening up on his player I watched him play against Glenelg last year and thanks to him it helped us win the game due to his player being given too much space at that was an SANFL kid although he got picked in teh best because of his possesion rate

He'll get his chance soon enough. Probably after we capitulate against Geelong and Hampton spuds it up and Knight gets injured again.

Does anyone know how Bickley handled the selection news last night. He's an avid fan of David Mackay, loves his run and carry and elite kick.
Took it well, he's been arguing with Rowie who was pushing for Thommo recall.

Mind you Bicks was saying we should rest Sloane.

Bickley was off the Mackay wagon at the end of last year.

Bickley floated a number of stars as potential trades, including 2010 best and fairest winner Richard Douglas, as well as promising youngster Jarryd Lyons and David MacKay.

“David MacKay has had seven years at the footy club and never really, I don’t think, fulfilled the potential he showed. In ‘09 in a final he was outstanding and people thought this guy is going to come on to be a great player and get 25 plus possessions each week. Hasn’t reached those heights.”

Did they manage to get some Crows talk in among all the Shanghai talk?

Bicks was saying prior to team announcements that Mackay should be dropped

On Greenwood, from the outside looking in i have doubts greenwood can convert sanfl form to afl, to be an afl inside mid the one thing you do have to have is great instincts in reading the play and i just dont think he has it, he could make it at AFL if he were to be a tagger

Gallucci, i really liked him in the draft and was pretty sure he will become a good afl player im just not sure he's ready right now

McKay, everyone knows his faults and i think the crows need a more contested player in his position.

Beech, i think he can be really good AFL defender and would most probably be getting a game in other sides but i dont think you can play him with brown & laird in the team

Polhoke will get there and im a little surprised you are playing Gallucci over him right at the moment

Wigg, ive watched a lot of wigg over the past 2 seasons and i just dont get the hype on him, he's a good kick but i wouldnt say he's a great kick and he's undersized for AFL and lacks intensity at the ball,

jenkins, i remember him saying last year if teams dont like him getting joe-the-gooses over the top they should do something about it, well i think this year they have and his strength is his ability to run. With teams clogging up space it makes it hard for him and for some reason he cant influence games by being a gorilla forward and crashing packs
On JJ, he has zero ability to play well when sore or even partially injured. He's still hurt from the hit to his ribs and as a result he's not running or committing his body and is therefore just a lump of clay in our forward line. Will get his run back when fit and he actually does take a lot of contested marks (surprisingly), but never has crashed packs I agree.

Why is Mackay a big game player?
No I don't mean that. I'm saying that we're probably thinking whoopy we are now ruthless and dropping non performers as a direction but I think the club wouldn't have had the balls to drop JJ and Mackay if we were up against a better team. I think the club believes Mackay would be a safer bet if playing a better club.

Is that a nice way of saying he has the heart of a pea

Yeah that's just an imaginary narrative you're projecting onto it. You don't know shit.

What narrative? I'm saying they are shit contracts, and I said that the minute they were both signed.

You agreed with the length of those contracts? Good for you. You might be an idiot, but good for you.

He seems understanding of it whilst pushing the I'd Rest Sloane angle.

This is it. Takes one solid knock to take him out of a game and never crashes packs despite being a big body. He's soft by AFL standard. Not surprised the rib damage has resulted in a significant drop in form. His game against GWS was really solid and he's still one of the best forward/ruck players in the comp. He's absolutely best 22 and will be back in a week or two.

rest Sloane? What the hell for?

hoping it only takes the rest of the competition a week to forget he struggles with a hard tag?
It was more 'it's a long season and he will need a rest'

the last two weeks don't count? ;)

in all seriousness we've got the bye and a week off before finals, I think Sloane will be alright. I'd be looking at resting Jacobs and guys like Talia and B. Crouch who have had the odd hamstring complaint.
