Didn't 20 have that chance this week?

I think you've forgotten Laird. He is untouchable. Even last night, he was the only player on our side who looked serene, composed, capable, and in form.
I actually didn't think he did.

So much of the back line play is designed so that Laird ends up wth the ball, but even though he was getting his hands on it, I felt he was fumbly and kicked and hoped most of the time. Thought Smith was better myself.

Douglas has been our best midfielder in both games.
Watch the first quarter and note the following times and players:

19:16 Douglas fails.to impact marking contest
17:15 Douglas brushed aside by Viney at stoppage
16:34 Douglas taps it to opp instead of taking it
13:28 B Crouch seagulls contest after his brother runs past the tap
12:56 Goes to ground under pressure and ball goes past him

That's in the first 10 minutes of the game. I also counted 3 soft Atkins efforts and a couple from Mackay and Jenkins.

Those things might seem minor, but they contribute to the opposition gaining confidence and ascendency inside. It's soft mindedness and a lack of hunger.

Out: Sauce (rest him), Jenkins or Otten (leaning toward JJ) Dmac, Hampton.

In: Greenwood, ROB, Knight, Wigg (besides disposal I liked the amount of ball he got in JLT).

Mackay's selection embodies everything wrong with this club at the moment
The selectors are about as bad as Mackay is out on the field. They are not doing him and the team any favours by continually playing him as he knows his selection is from a group that obviously accepts his mediocrity with a reward each week.

Look he wasn't fantastic. In fact he was mediocre. But he was the best mid out there. He tried twice as hard as any other player. That's an indictment on every single midfielder in our side. It wasn't enough.

The post replies to Bicks, you need to read back to gain context.

You responded to me saying Douglas was our best midfielder, after you earlier suggested he didn't go in for the fight. He was probably our only midfielder putting in. He wasn't perfect and didn't contest everything, but he tried.

Yeah sorry I quoted the wrong post. However you responded to my original reply to Bicks. The context is my assertion that Douglas doesn't work hard to get to contests or 50/50s and B Crouch short steps often

Not sure about Douglas, he has been working harder than anyone else. Though he does have a habit over the past two weeks of jogging like a plodder.

Crouch has zero confidence in his body and doesn't put in to the level acceptable for AFL. Only tackles in close. Don't think he's taken a contested grab or even competed in the air for 3 years

As a general observation, watch the stoppage at 11.05 in the second. Every player is behind their opponent. Every one. This from a team needing to make a statement, top of the ladder, and 3 goals up.

Terrible, and epitomised the pantsing we copped.

My team:

Backs:

Talia needs to swap with Hartigan. He is the best full back we've got and under pressure will hold his nerve. He must take the best key position player.

It's also time for Lever to step up. Make lever the CHB. He's a great defender and decision maker and a born leader. Let him direct play from that position.

Make Hartigan the third defender. Release the pressure on the guy and maybe let him use his speed and size as a weapon.

Doedee, the season is still young the time is right.

Brown, Talia, Hartigan
Doedee, Lever, Smith

Mids:

Cameron needs to become a permanent part of this midfield and Mackay must be banished forever. We also need a big body and some fresh ideas. We're clearly one of the slowest starting sides in the competition and I believe this is all about the midfield. When I look at our starting centre square midfielders in Sloane, mrouch and Douglas, I don't exactly see an explosive group, buy more work horses. How about we try different combinations at the beginning and let the workhorses takeover when the sting is out and the opposition are tired?

Cameron, Brouch, Hampton
Follow: Jacobs, Sloane Laird

Forwards:
The least of our worries really.

Lynch, Walker, milera
Menzel, JJ, betts

Interchange: greenwood, mrouch, Knight, Douglas

Douglas has been serviceable and I can't fault his endeavour, however it is time to take a back seat. Surely we've learnt from the Thompson experience and understand that the torch must be passed when it is still burning strong, not when it is just about out of gas.

Full team:

Brown, Talia, Hartigan
Doedee, Lever, Smith
Cameron, Brouch, Hampton
Lynch, Walker, Milera
Menzel, JJ, betts

Follow: Jacobs, Sloane Laird

Interchange: Greenwood, Mrouch, Knight, Douglas

Out: Atkins, Otten, Kelly, Mackay
In: Doedee, Greenwood, Lever, Knight

No McGovern?

I wouldn't mind seeing Talia and Hartigan swap places, especially with Lever intercepting around the CHB area. Think as a 1 on 1 Talia is far better than Hartigan and generally around the CHB area you have a few helpers whereas the deeper forward generally get a 1v1 more often.

Talia is mentally pretty strong and will hold his nerve on the last line.

I also feel Hartigan needs a pressure release, hence why I'm suggesting third tall defender.

More importantly though, I'm convinced that it's Lever's time. We need the give him more responsibility and CHB is perfect for him.

I just can't see how we can keep Hampton in the side. He refused to chase his direct opponent and tries to do too much and ends up doing nothing. His disposal is going south quick and he isn't laying any tackles and is getting beaten in the midfield. He's had his chance. Greenwood should now get his chance.

Need some hunger in the side. Pyke needs to show he's willing to drop underperforming players.
Make them work for and earn their spot.

Out this week: Menzel (inj), Mackay (omitted), Cameron (managed),

In: Lever, Greenwood, Galluci/Polhoke.

On thin ice as per my above statement: The whole side except Sloane and Eddie. No golden tickets, no passengers.

Talk about not watching the game you want players dropped for underperforming and Leave JJ in he has played round 1 well and may aswell not have played the last 3, Mackay deserves to go but has played more games better than JJ

Do you believe in gold passes

No but JJ won't be getting dropped this week. As I said whole team on notice, but I would almost bet my house that Pyke won't drop him.

Interesting point you make regarding Talia. I remember in the Sando years thinking how often Talia was one out against the best opposition forward at the top of the square and he either won it or neutralised it. Was always thinking thank gosh for him. Is he deliberately playing further up the ground or opposition dragging him away or am I just not watching that aspect? Would have saved a few goals Saturday night if he was the defender in some of those contests.

. We will have to accept Thommo short comings to not get smashed and pushed around like last night it's not ideal but it's the best we have
I agree. 2 weeks in a row now we've been totally out muscled. Whilst I agree that Thommo is slow with no 2 way running we need his mature body in there I think. We've got way too many outside runners atm and nowhere near enough at the coalface. When Sloane is tagged and it will happen more and more now we've got nobody there to win the ball. Thommo will bring that toughness I think, whether that will be enough remains to be seen.
My changes would be;
Out; Menzel, MacKay,Otten.
In; Thommo, Greenwood/Knight, Lever.
Bit of a risk bringing Thommo in I know but against Brisbane I think it's worth a try to see if we can get our MF balance right cause atm it ain't working.

You have plenty of good points I would have knight in if he was playing well but he isn't and deserves to go back to the twos to gain form with Greenwood deserving a crack and the way JJ is playing he may aswell be running water for the team if he needs to be on the field where otten is far more effective
