after watching the game again... and will probably watch it again tonight :D I am hoping bevo plays JJ forward again, but pushes suckers up to the wing also. having two blokes who can kick accurately from 50 wipes out the opposition defense completely. To compensate they push up, opens the 50 for cloak and Dicko and maybe bont again, to run riot. I really REALLY like that forward set up.

I also LOVEEEEEEEEED that we didn't bomb away, in fact several times you could see them trying to not follow their instinct to bomb and kept going side to side looking for an opening. BEAUTIFUL!

Well I think you should have a good balance in your 22. This may be seen as controversial in a way, but I would like to have 7 backs, a ruck/forward combo and then 13 players who can play as a forward and then one of inside or outside mid. This is our 22 from the weekend:

Back 7 (need to be able to intercept mark)
Lewis YOUNG- good
Zaine CORDY- good
Easton WOOD- good
Shane BIGGS- good
Bailey WILLIAMS- good
Matthew SUCKLING- nope
Robert MURPHY- not really (both should be moved forward so they can use their dangerous foot skills)

Ruck/Forward Combo (capable of taking contested marks around the ground and up forward)
Jordan ROUGHEAD- good
Travis CLOKE- not quite

Midfielder/Forwards (dangerous by foot/genuine leg speed/good in 1v1s)
Luke DAHLHAUS- genuine leg speed, good in 1v1s
Tom LIBERATORE- good in 1v1s
Jason JOHANNISEN- genuine leg speed, dangerous by foot
Marcus BONTEMPELLI- dangerous by foot, good in 1v1s
Lukas WEBB- dangerous by foot
Bailey DALE- dangerous by foot
Caleb DANIEL- dangerous by foot, genuine leg speed
Toby MCLEAN- good in 1v1s
Liam PICKEN- good in 1v1s
Tory DICKSON- dangerous by foot
Mitch WALLIS- good in 1v1s
Jack MACRAE- dangerous by foot, good in 1v1s
Lachie HUNTER- dangerous by foot, genuine leg speed

Feel like we need to add a few more players capable of taking an intercept mark, and I feel like we need a bit more leg speed up forward. Also need Tom Boyd back to balance out the forward/ruck combo.

Murphy has been playing forward.

He's nice when he gets it, but faaaark me he can't win a contest any more.

Why is Suckling the whipping boy? Why does everyone keep thinking he'll get dropped when he's played every game for the year? If he wasn't being dropped missing shots 35m out directly in front under no pressure, he's not going to get dropped when he's nailing shots from outside 50 from tighter angles which he's done over the last few weeks.

Plain and simple, he does something that nobody else on our team (or not many in the entire AFL for that matter) can do - consistently kick the darn thing over longer distances. That is inherently a valuable skill. When we set up for kick-ins that involve slicing it straight down the corridor, where an extra 5m can be critical for who kicks the next goal from that kick-in, Suckling has value to the team. When we have the ball on the half-back flank, and we decide to square it up sideways to Suckling, who then wins the ball, runs and carries 10m before bombing it 60m, that has value.

I just don't get it. He's a solid player, but more importantly, he's functioning in a role that nobody else can replicate. I get that he has his weaknesses - nobody over 6 foot tall should be that weak overhead in marking contests - but unless anyone can offer up a player who will play that role better than Suckling, after playing every game this season, he's not getting dropped.

I would place him in our top 10 this year easily. He is one of the few who can really open up the play with his kicking, and it's only got to work a few times for a few goals. He doesn't make as many errors as some people would believe either. Only thing I'd say is he shouldn't be taking kickouts though. His kicking style throws off players

Speaking of opening up the play, Libba did several fantastic kicks into the corridor to open up the game, think he is slowly finding form.

No change for mine. Honey to come in if any are rested. I'd rather play Cloke instead of Red, even if it meant potentially upsetting Red. I'd like to see Cloke build some form going into finals... provided we scrape through...

Can any Brisbane types tell me when the open training session will be this week?

Those kicks were gems. Long penetrating balls that went directly to the intended targets - who all happened to be in yards of space. Almost my favourite moments of the game. Aside from the final siren!

As I watched one of those kicks - when he took possession in the centre, looked up and checked out the options and picked out Dickson ??? - I flashed back to the prelim final against GWS.
It was a carbon copy of the play when he found Macrae for the winning goal after a miracle tap from Bontempelli.
The mojo was back!

I'll admit that he's been better the last couple weeks but his long kicks are useless if they go straight to the opposition, which is no rarity.

It's at least better footy than the month after the concussion and before he was dropped, which is a start. If he like many others can progressively improve as we push for finals he's going to be extremely important for us.

Yeah, I'm not saying he doesn't have his faults, rather we have a certain style of play that relies on his distance kicking and we organise around that. He plays a role - if we don't have the same player for kick-ins, for example, we would have to structure a different way which might be harmful to the team.
