Changes v Brisbane

The whole game plan is to move the ball so quickly that it doesn't matter if targets are hit.

That is a very strange comment to make, especially when turnovers cause goals so often. When running / carrying the ball through the middle of the ground, a turnover will often result in an opposition goal.

I don't think Tenace is all that faster than the other mids in general play. He lacks the lateral ability that you need to fool opposition / break tackles, and his awareness is pathetic. His pace by no means outweighs a target being hit in the forward 50...

Sometimes pace can be the most important factor in a player though, with disposal secondary. I am sure there are many players in the AFL in this category.

You can not hit a target and not turn it over. Ball falls short, player still gathers. Ball is contested and a goal is crumbed. I could go on.

Point is, I never said turning the ball over wasn't bad.

Again, no change unless change is forced.

Rooke might be in trouble. The only thing in his favour was that he was just about standing still and Ricciuto was coming towards him. He did brace for the bump though and the duty of care lies with the bumper.

Selwood will slot straight back in if Rooke is out.

Tenace was poor by foot on a few occasions today but unless we can replace him with someone who would provide an equal amount of run, we can't drop him.

This is not directed at you, but that is unquestionably the dumbest phrase to be used in AFL football. If Rooke had moved towards Ricciuto I'd agree, but he was standing still. What the hell is he meant to do - gracefully move aside and let an opposition player pass? Duty of care is what barmans have for drunk patrons, it should never be applied on the football field.

From what I saw there are plenty of players that might be dropped for poor disposal - Enright, Tenace, Corey, Mackie. But a lot of players made bad decisions - Bartel and Chapman on more than one occasion bombed the ball mindlessly to 3 on 1 contests. I thought G.Ablett was our only classy player today.

I thought our two worst players were Nathan Ablett and Varcoe. Ablett had about 4 touches which is just not enough, and Varcoe did even less. For all the talk about his defensive pressure, he is simply not getting the ball. He's also soft when the heat is on. If anyone will be dropped (which I still doubt) it should be him.

Don't forget though our seconds lost and only Selwood really put his hand up for inclusion. Can't see wholesale changes for next week. Although Hawkins in for Nathan Ablett may not impossible depending on Thompson's thinking.

:D:D:D

I could write an essay why this statement is so undeniably dim-witted but I think I'll just sit back and laugh at it instead...

You have taken a part of his statement and focusing on it in isolation. try looking at it broadly and you will see the point he is trying to make

Doesn't mean you have to agree with him - that is upto you. But there is no point singling out a statement and not taking into account what else he said.

Hey, not my words. That's what the AFL says. They'll say Rooke should not have braced for the bump.

How so?

I know you usually back up everything else this guy posts, but come on you're clutching at straws this time!

Under no situation is it ok to not hit targets, it causes turnovers. Turnovers directly result in easy goals for the opposition.

Fair enough... but in Geelong's case we struggle with hitting targets in a flooded forward line and have too many mids with bad disposal -- Enright, Tenace, Corey, Mackie etc. The combination of bad disposal and our forwards not being strong markers makes it hard.

Riccardi is a good example of what I'm talking about. Not fast, but always hit the forwards and often kick goals... Tenace's kicking is not league standard!

Its a tough decision in a split second.
Do you pull back and everyones hanging it on you for doing so.
Do you hit it and everyones hanging it on you also.
Loose Loose situation

A passage of play where the ball was in dispute and Varcoe most definitely waited for the Adelaide guy to grab the ball instead of putting his head over it first. He's only young, I'm hoping he'll grow out of it. But a real pressure game like today showed he's got some way to go. As it did Nathan Ablett.

This isn't a slagging off, he's been good this year in patches. But you can't endlessly afford the luxury of a forward pocket who only gets 2 touches a game. I'm afraid I'd have Selwood instead right now.

Out: Tenace, Rooke
In: Selwood, Hunt

Tenace is absolutely useless under pressure and turns the ball over too much. Selwood has shown he has the skills, toughness and agility in a handful of games that Tenace will never have...

Fair enough mate. I know what you are saying. You could be right too. Thompson might opt for someone else this week.

I dont know about you guys but dont you think this one was more important than any we have had over the last weeks as we won all those with so much ease . We did need one that we had to fight for. sure there were lots of mistakes but we really had to pull something out and thats something we havent been able to do in the past.

Couldn't agree more Tony, I thought this was easily our most important win of the season. We had to beat quality opposition at a ground where our record is terrible; we had to win where the expectation was that we would win; the opposition were very well drilled and coached and nullified our game plan; finally most of our forwards were down on the day.

Wasn't a great game, but a very great win.

Varcoe has to stay in the side. His defensive pressure is excellent (and crucial)... everything else in his game is a bonus IMO.

When your winning why make changes. The only changes should be suspensions or injurys. There was alot of poor disposal today from both sides it was one of those games.

I don't really buy the 'no need to change as long as we're winning' mantra. It's not as though 22 players contributed at an equal (or passable) level during the game. Similarly, there's always scope for improvement.

I don't think Tenace hit a target all day - delivered a mixture of every kick under the sun that doesn't hit targets. His running game is improving, but it's not enough to be his saving grace for mine.

Varcoe was very ordinary as well.

Finally some common sense. Swapping and changing people in a team just because they had one bad game is ridiculous especially considering the fact the game was a win and a hard close interstate one. It was an ugly game and our disposal wasnt great, especially in the first quarter but even if Gazza stuffed up a disposal or two (remember the one where he tried to loop a handball over to Varcoe in the last quarter during a cruicial point of the game?) Sure Tenace had a very bad game but his last few games before today have been very good. U cant drop a player for one bad game.

I think the only out might be Rooke if suspended. If he is, I think Selwood seems the most likely to come in unless he has a bit of an injury. If thats the case than Hunt will prolly make his way into the side.

Agree Tenace had a very poor day today, but so did quite a few others......disposal wise especially.

Joel was absolutley woeful yet again with hand and foot, Enright also, and Scarlett too. Was what I would term a "painful" win.

Rooke will go so bring in Selwood or Prismall. If Tenace goes out then bring in Hunt (although I think one poor game should be allowed, especially for his development and confidence).

Varcoe should retain his spot, no reason to drop him.

NAB has had a lean couple and may be considered, but again I think he will be OK (unless injured) and Hawkins will come in for him (even though he played like he didn't really care in the two's - though NAB had a similar trait in his first couple of years too).

So:
Out: Rooke (susp)
In: Selwood/Prismall

Maybes:
Out: Tenace, N Ablett
In: Hunt, Hawkins

Bit harsh on Hawkins. I watched the game and he looked ok but the kicking to him was atrocious. It was even worse than the seniors if that's possible. When they actually kicked it to him out in front he was marking well. His kicking for goal was off but I didn't think he was that bad.

In my view only Selwood really stood out. Maybe Prismall also. Hunt was solid for a half but certainly didn't star.

What is wrong with everybody wanting to drop players. We have won 6 straight why change the team around. Only bring in players if another is injured. Not everyone can be outstanding every week. They are all playing their part, and ok we didnt play that great against adelaide but we still won, and it was at aami we needed a hard fought win like that
