No offense but you need to watch the replay and focus on what Colquhoun did because right now you couldn't be more wrong.
Colquhoun divides people. personally I lok at him and see Krak and Polec in the way he actually looks ahead, see's what's on offer and picks his path, sure he might bugger a few up but he is coming back from a knee reconstruction, our captain blazes away and caughs it up more than he does - (nothing against you though Tav!).

I can't remember whether it was Surj or raman on the podcast who said that he and Pittard are cerebral players, which was a good point. The sort of player who takes their time to think about the best option rather than just going with the first option is always divisive in the AFL. Two reasons:

A) Taking your time in Aussie Rules football is probably more dangerous than in any other sport, because it requires 360 awareness. It's so much easier to get tackled from behind in Aussie Rules than soccer, basketball, rugby, gridiron etc, especially with the level of defensive pressure that AFL teams put on. That sort of player is therefore invariably going to get called HTB a lot, and not much is more frustrating to fans than watching players get caught HTB.

B) That style of play draws more attention to their mistakes than other people's mistakes. If you take your time, sidestep a couple of opponents and then make a mistake with the ball, it's more noticeable and is going to stick in the memory of the fans more than somebody who immediately blazes away and makes a mistake with the ball.

But when the cerebral player does pull off what they were going for, it usually leads to a much better result for the team than the player who blazes away without thinking. That's why I like Pittard and Hoon despite their occasional mistakes.

Hoon is excellent with his on field positioning, his kicking has really let him down at times though. He was better against the Saints - his small size is still a concern but he's strong enough I reckon, he just has to work on his skills.

First option is your best option.
I see enough of our first options which are rubbish - i.e. blindly putting it on the boot coming out of defence just to clear it, straight to an opposition player, been happening all year and it kills us 90% of the time. I think when you have two options in front of you and you have to make a choice, first option might be the right one, but probably involves how quick the play is moving and close you are to the next play.

Great description. Sums up perfectly why Pittard and Colquhoun are quality.

For one I absolutely loved Pittard's runs last week. I trust him because I know he has the ability to execute the sidestep well, just wish the crowd would start backing him in.
He was just dancing around blokes and opening up the whole field for us. That sort of attack of half back is hugely valuable.

I have to keep reminding myself that he is young etc. he drives me crazy otherwise, too weak for my liking...but he's young.

First option is your best option.
Not necessarily, just depends how many tricks you have. Robbie Gray wouldn't be half as effective if he took the first option, Pittard ditto. But yes, Colquhoun probably doesn't have the tricks to get away with not giving the first option at AFL level.

Colquhoun fair dinkum drove me mad last weak ... still wiping the dribble off my chin! The unforced errors had me throwing things at the TV, but he unquestionably ran all day, kept positioning himself well all game, and then made some great handballs & chest passes at other times to compensate ... I love him, hate him, love him, hate ......:confused:

But you know he will keep getting better. He will end up a good player for us.
