That stat is a classic AFL media stat - think they’ve come up with some formula for something that doesn’t take into account nearly enough information.

It’s based on how many chains of play they’re involved in and what percentage of those chains result in goals. By nature it punishes high volume teams who start a lot of chains of play. It’s the sort of stat that would be laughed out for the NBA for not being adjusted for pace or per/100 possessions, but because the AFL has just discovered stats exist beyond dream team, it’s what we’ve got.

Ultimately yes you’d rather have your mids dominate the stat, but it’s not close to the full story.

First year attempt as a full time ruck? He's rucked plenty in his time with us, often on his own in 2017 and he was a much better player.

It's concerning that he's in the worst form of his career (with WCE) when he should be improving.

In 2019 he's averaging club low goals, behinds, disposals, marks, tackles, clearances, contested marks, score involvements and metres gained.

Even more telling is that he's doing all of this from more TOG% as well ^^^^

I'm actually a fan of Vardy, have been since he arrived, but i'm also a fan of getting the 4 points.

Thankfully we're only against ROB and likely Jenkins this week so Vardy SHOULD really be able to hold his own.

Always feel with Vardy the need to temper expectations - we aren’t going to turn him into a #1 ruck. So expecting him to get 30 hit outs each week is just not going to happen. So against a guy like Gawn all we would have asked for is a contest, and to try and push Gawn the other way by taking marks up the ground and kicking a goal or two. He was off around the grounds and was beaten for the most part, but He won’t be the first ruckman to be beaten by Gawn this year. He’s top 2 in the league for a reason.

We’d all love Nic to be back tapping it to a running Shuey or Yeo but for now we just have to scrap.
