Players that are not performing as they should be: Darling, Hutchings, Redden, Vardy - they should be on watch. Ah Chee would be a chance to come in, Schofield perhaps and shift Cole to midfield. There is not much else in the cupboard.

Out: Oscar from defence. He was sooo out of place and not surprising, we’re asking a young kpp to play kpf, 3rd tall forward, chop out ruck and now KPD. Cannot expect him understand our defensive structures and all other aspects
In Brander - time to make him our KPD and if not him, then Schofield

Out: Cole. He has lost confidence and is costing us.
In: Nelson or Rotham

Out: Hutchings unless he has a hard tag
In Matth Allen

Out Venables (concussion but did SFA prior to that)
In Waterman

Cole played ok last night I thought. No way he comes out if Jetta is suspended.

If you don't think Darling needs to be dropped to whack some sense into him you do not know football. **** me he is a liability right now. His lack of willingness to impact a contest is horrid. His lack of leading into space is **** house. His constant playing for frees instead of out muscling campaigners is disgraceful.

Redden on watch for a wake up call.

Sheed too.

Sheed?

33 touches, 13 marks and 2 goals Sheed needs a wake up call?

I personally don't think that the answer to our slow start to the year is in the Reserves team.
The issue doesn't seem to be with our premiership players but the tactics deployed against them.
We are seeing a return to the bad old days of the double flood but not only is it used against the Eagles but all the 2018 top teams who all used a similar game plan. Melbourne, last night just resumed that structure and style from last season against WCE who also deployed the same game style as last season and the game played out as you would expect based on the 2018. Otherwise Melbourne has struggled as has Richmond and Hawthorn.
Collingwood has struggled over the last few weeks against Carlton and against St Kilda today.
Something has changed, not the new rules but a more negative approach that has resulted in lowers scores, ugly football.
A few of the commentators (so called experts ) are now picking up on this and you can bet your life that some time soon some coaches and strategists find their way through the mire.
We are not doing too bad in the current environment.
We are the hunted don't forget', every coach is watching what works against the Eagles.

Among the tactics that are obvious are:

1. A twelve man defense, with 5 across half back and 4 across center including 2 on each wing to stop the switch and the overlap causing the WCE to play back.
2. This flood also stops Darling and Kennedy to lead into space. Darling and Kennedy sometimes double teamed as well.
3. Arms of McGovern, Kennedy and Darling being held and chopped consistently.
4. Ball being delivered by opposition teams into their forward lines low and wide. (Often results is difficult shot on goals by opposition, hence numerous behinds kicked against us)
5. McGovern being blocked from running to the ball delivery.
6. The flood invariably chops off many WCE attacks and slingshots ball over into a vacant forwadline and run on to score goals. (hopefull enough to win the game or get close/ Ross Lyon style.)

Personally I don't believe that the Flood and Run Game can be sustained for four quarters.

I know they stopped him around the ground, but gee wiz thats terrible. 6 frees against is just not acceptable either.

Zakly!! Gawn looked to be dominating through clever timing as much as anything, especially against hickey. The big bag of meat brooksby is made to crash into campaigners. Get him in there crashing campaigners give our inside players a chance. Too often Gawn gave his mids better service on the outside

Redden is kind of the odd man out now, you bemoan Sheed playing out of position but Redden is behind Shuey, Yeo, Sheed and Gaff as far as mids go so his numbers won't be great all the time. I agree though he's capable of way more than he gave last night. Still put his body on the line in the last.

Cole was actually quite good, happy with his game and Duggan just needs to refocus on his kicks, started the season very well but has lapsed recently.

Sheed doesn't need a wake up for 80% of his game which is spot on, he does have stuff to work on (tackling/kicking off a step) but it's best done at AFL level. Stark differences between his movement and that of even someone like Gaff in the contest. Very valuable still though. Had some good spoils tonight when out of position, halved some aerial contests but did let himself down at some stoppages.

Darling was alright, he's having an impact in games still, something JK does as well even with poor delivery. 4 tackles, 2 goal assists, 18 pressure acts. I'd say he's showing enough to think he'll have it all click soon, without being brilliant. Kind of similar to the team as a whole.

Jetta won't get suspended for that.

Was just a tackle not a spear tackle.
Nothing like natanuis tackle either.
From the MRP...

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Careless Conduct with Medium Impact and High Contact. The incident was classified as a one-match sanction.

Schofield comes back in for Jetta.
Masten will come in for Vendables.
Waterman back in for Vardy
Most logical choices I think.

Not sure I like these to be honest.
Schofield is almost stationary slow, Jetta fast.
Masten can run all day, but is slow, Venables reasonably fast.
Waterman can't ruck, Vardy... ok, I can go with this.

You cant find identical replacements.
Just experience to come in for the injuried.

Unless we go down the path and try an untried player like Allen for Vendables.

Watson would of been a good replacement for Jetta but he's injuried also. Masten will likely come in or unless we take the risk with Rotham
Vardy is just hopeless. We don't need two rucks. Hickey and Allen is fine.

If Vardy can't play forward as he as been very poor down there we might aswell give Waterman another go who's a true forward and can take a mark.

Absolutely sick of campaigner teams continuing to play apparently concussed players with zero repercussion while our blokes get rubbed out because of concussion. AFL can gagf with their persistent look both ways administration.

Out: Venners (conc) Jetts (susp)

In: ah Chee, Nelson

Rotham unlucky

Shep Schofield Hurn
Cole McGovern Rotham
Redden Sheed Gaff
Allen Darling Cripps
Ryan Kennedy Petch
Hickey Yeo Shuey
Vardy Hutchings Duggan Rioli

Out Jetta, Venables,
In Rotham, Schofield

Rotham in for Jetts, Allen goes back to the forward line and Schoey takes his place in FB.

Rioli Ryan Petch and Crippa give plenty of pressure to make up for the loss of Venners.

Allen is kicking more than a goal a game, he is the future of the club, he is learning his craft from two of the best in the business before one of them retires, he stays

Vardy is a forward who can ruck a bit (some question about that at the moment ). He is NOT a lead ruck who goes forward occasionally.

Considering that as it stands...
1. He is not taking any marks. And as for marks i50...
2. He is not kicking any goals... ANY goals...
3. He is averaging about 6 possessions (at low %) per game....
4. He can't win a ruck contest. Even against spuds he is being beaten. When he comes up against someone half decent, it's embarrassing.

After being a brave warrior at the end of 2018, he is currently offering nothing. He couldn't win a ruck contest if he paid the other guy to fall over and he's doing nothing else.

Even if Hickey can't get up for the South Park Cows match, we cannot afford to carry him. We would be better with a debutante going solo than this.

Time for a rest. No matter what.

The most sensible post in the whole thread, just got through a tough game where we hit our straps in the last quarter when we needed too. We were also playing after flying interstate and then a 6 day break, something that we struggle with, a great effort by the boys, especially given Gawns ruck dominance. Nic Nat to return in a few weeks too😀

Maybe it is the difference in being live v watching on TV but I did not like Cole’s game either Friday night or the last month

Assuming Jets is out, then Cole stays in. You would think the logical Jets replacement is Rotham but could also be Nelson.

Again watching at the game, Allen spent more time manning up on smaller forwards and looked confused and unsure of his role. If Schofield is fit, I’d return Allen to forward-ruck role.

I’m keen to bring in MAllen and play him as a mid and get Shuey and Redden to spend more time forward.

In Schofield Rotham MAllen
Out Jets Venables Vardy

7 defenders
Sheppard Hurn Schofield
Cole McGovern Duggan Rotham

8 mids
Ruck Hickey Allen
Tagger Hutchings (tag Sloan)
Gaff Yeo Sheed Shuey MAllen

7 Forwards
JK Darling
Redden Rioli Ryan Cripps Petruccelle

I still feel like he is playing sore. Struggling to get separation, lacking a but of pace and chasing at 80-90% (not alone there).

Hopefully an 8 day break and the upcoming bye can help whatever is ailing him...

Was commenting at the game that he was either sick or sore, but he was hobbling around like an old man. Even off the ball looked like he could hardly move. Either way, if he is not 100% he should not be playing.

Surely Venables misses?
Yeah, even if medically cleared he surely gets the chop for grossly underperforming. All the experts had him down for 20+ possessions and he ended up with 2.

I hope we find a spot for Rotham. Should be one of the first in line for elevation based on consistency of form.
