i would go with

mcveigh-johnson
slattery-higgins
pears-welsh
fletcher-hahn
hurley-minson
dempsey-aker
and in the midfield i would go
watson-boyd
lovett-picken
dyson-griffen
welsh-cooney
stanton-cross

Big loss for us there IMHO, Dempsey is most damaging when he is less accountable and is free to run off half back.

I would drop Stanton and bring in Houli to shut down Aker!!

I watched Stanton very closely on the weekend and sorry I have had a gutful of him doing nothing week in week out!!
That effort on the wing where he had to go hard at a loose ball from an indirect kick was just pathetic, he looked like he was going at it at about 50%.
Houli could play his role and be much more damaging and can be more accountable, Bachar's penetrating kicking is what we need to set us up coming out of the backline and entries into our forward 50!!!
Tooooooo slow!!!

We need more pace against the Dogs!!!
Sorry no one will change my mind about Stanton = 29 possesions of absolute nothing!!!

Ins = Houli
Outs = Stanton.

I'm getting sick of your do you watch football comments. It doesn't make your argument any stronger and it's becoming quite pathetic.

Well you left yourself wide open earlier in the season by making comments on a game you had not seen.
If you wenrt such a Monday quarterback people would not question it :D

And for a change i do happen to agree on this one. Slattery has had some wins on Johnson in the past.

Backs
Johnson - Pears
Higgins - Slattery (if he can't do this job then get rid of him, because this is what he is in the side to do!)
Hahn - McPhee
Minson - Fletcher
Murphy/Aker - Dempsey
Welsh - Hurley

Have to play Bellchambers and prob leave our Hooker. Come finals we need 2 genuine ruckman to compete and Bellchambers is better than Hooker in that role. Ryder is starting to struggle with doing most of the ruck (not in ability just must be sore palying ruck all year) so bellchambers is a must.

The Age gave Stanton best on ground so he must have done something right.

Ryder was far from struggling against Jolly on the weekend. Collingwood must have been an off day.

Stanton struggled to get in the top 5 on Saturday imo. Seems to me The Age base their votes on stats alone.

True he did well but i just think another 2 months in the ruck he might start to battle a bit more. Its clear his body is starting to feel the effects of playing ruck all year against men, something he hasnt done before.

I think it would benefit to make him play 60% in the ruck instead of the 80% he is now, we need him firing come september if we make it. And also give bellchambers the experience he needs. Hooker tries hard but its clear he is not a ruckman.

Yeah if you get enough of the ball you must be a gun!!!

Stanton's accountability is poor.

What is Stanton's role in the side???

If it is to get the ball as much as possible and not be accountable, then I would like to see Houli in that role because he would be more damaging, and that is the reason why he is in the seconds - to work on the defensive side of his game.

If Stanton is such a hard runner, why not give him a run with role and make him accountable in trying to stop his opponent getting the ball while getting it himself!!!

The thread on this site titled 'votes vs Sydney' also has a large number of fans putting Stanton in the top three on the ground so I guess everyone looks at things differently.

I personally didn;t think he was in the top 3 but he definetly had a good game and for people to say that "they watched him closely and he does nothing week in week out" p****s me off.

He constantly covers more ground than anyone else and is a very dangerous player when let loose (which is the reason he is tagged most weeks) also he's the youngest listed player to have reached 100games (people forget he has only just turned 23).

Stanton is the new scapegoat it seems with Dyson and McPhee now off the hook.

In a few years it will be Hooker or Houli or someone else. The younger supporters have a short attention span so they get bored with a player once he's been around for a few years.

I agree.

I think we should look at delisting him along with Lovett, Lloyd and Lucas who aren't accountable enough... possibly Jobe also but we'll keep him for the time being.

Did you see when Goodes ran through the middle from a ball up and kicked a goal. Unaccountable Ryder and not good enough.

Off to Bendigo for you.

After watching Bendigo yesterday i would consider Bellchambers for Hooker, and if Slatts doesn't pull up from that back injury i'd bring in Houli.

Johnson - McVeigh
Hahn - Pears
Welsh - Fletcher
Minson - Hurley
Akermanis - Dempsey
Higgins - Slattery (this one really worries me)
Murphy (has been playing down back recently but if he plays forward i'd go with McPhee)

I stand by my opinion that Slattery is more effective on small forwards who are crumbers, rather than small forwards who are marking players

IMO, McVeigh is a perfect match up for Johnson. Has the speed, football smarts, strength overhead to match Johnson.

Johnson has had a very solid year and was good against Collingwood.

Slattery has stood Johnson for the past 5 or 6 times we have played them. He's been relatively reasonable apart from a few freebies that Johnson received cherry picking.

I guess you know more than the coaching staff as they seem to pick Slattery on Johnson every time without fail.

You think that mcVeigh is a bad choice for Johnson.

Johnson is a similar player to Porplyzia, who McVeigh took to the cleaners.

Lets focus on your campaign to get Pears the Rising Star Award.

I think McVeigh is a great choice on Johnson. IIRC correctly McVeigh held Johnson a number of times in the early 00's.

Problem is Hahn's strength might be a bit too much for the other guys and McVeigh can handle that.

Either way I'm confident we have the right mix to hold them or mix and match if things don't go well.

The only blokes i can see coming into the side are Bellchambers and Myers. I only think one of them will come into the side (if not none) so i'd be looking at either Hooker or Hocking being dropped.

Why is there so much focus in this discussion on our defensive 50??
Are we planning to just play the game in that third of the ground??

IMO the focus needs to be on the midfield contest.

The Bulldogs' quality of ball movement/delivery from the midfield is how they get away with such a short forward line. Need to apply a lot more pressure at that point of the ground.

And I have an uneasy feeling that a midfield featuring all of Watson/Welsh/Prismall(/McVeigh perhaps) will not be able to keep up defensively with the Doggies midfielders. Any thoughts??

Oh yeah, forgot about Hocking. Another one that could be subbed-out this week...

Just one change for me.

Out: Hooker
In: Bellchambers

B: Slattery, Pears, Fletcher
HB: Dempsey, Hurley, McPhee
C: Lovett, Watson, Hocking
HF: Winderlich, Lucas, Dyson
F: McVeigh, Lloyd, Davey
R: Ryder, Stanton, Prismall
Int: Bellchambers, Lonergan, Welsh, Reimers
Emerg: Myers, Hooker, Houli

I agree with your concerns about Hahn.

He cut up Hooker big time last year.

I would probably try Hurley on Hahn, Mcphee on Welsh, Pears on Minson and Fletcher as the floater.

Hahn is probably too strong for Mcveigh, especially in the air.

We have flexibility to change the match ups if the needs arise.

Bear in mind that some posters on the Bulldogs board are asking for Hahn to be dropped.

i thought our worst player on the weekend was actually mark mcveigh - after his indiscretions i was expecting better. i thought he got off easy not having to play for bendigo - thought the soreness excuse was a bit flimsy...i would play him again this week but put him on notice.

the 5 day break will not help the bendigo bombers players given they played sunday and the game is friday night.

now that hurley is back, hooker's spot is the most dubious with the obvious replacement in bellchambers. big t-bell spent the best part of the whole match rucking so a lot will depend how he pulls up. if he pulls up ok then perhaps he could relieve ryder in the ruck off the bench.

slattery has a hamstring issue i believe - if they don't want to risk this then i would go with one of myers or lovett-murray.

in: bellchambers, myers (if slattery misses)
out: hooker, slattery (if injured)

matchups:

minson - hurley
hahn - fletcher
welsh - dempsey (courtney is actually reasonably tall and would run off and exploit him)
johnson - pears
higgins - mcveigh
akermanis - slattery/myers
