Knights said today that Houli and Myers were both more than likely to play in the VFL again this weekend with Skipworth and NLM the two that are in contention for recalls.

The only one i could really see is NLM for Hurley, purely for match up reasons however.

NO CHANGES!!!!!

Please not Skipworth. Team plays a lot better without him IMO.

Only changes - If Slattery doesn't come up then Houli (who i prefer anyway) and Bellchambers for Hooker, Paddy can't go all night against those bash and crash ruckman from the dogs and Hooker just doesn't give enough in the ruck despite his efforts.

Agreed, was a useless PSD pick. He better not play or get on the Dogs by a heck of a lot. No changes unless injuries.

Hurley can play forward if there is no matchup!:thumbsu:

I'd like to see Myers in for Hocking before the end of the season, but given the break it's probably best to wait a couple more weeks on that one.

NLM ahead of Skipworth if we need to make a change.

Knights has singled out Skipworth and Lovett-Murray as possible inclusions this week.

NLM is fine as he is a mature body with good skills, that said I'd rather back the current team who got the job done in Sydney. I see no reason for any changes unless injuries occur between now and Friday night

I dont think Skipworth is in the best 22 but I think it was a decent pick up. A lot of young guys have stepped up unlike most thought (winder, dyson, hocking) and Skipworth did ok when McVeigh, Prismall and Welsh were out of the side.

Its good to be discussing how to get good players into the side, rather then finding someone to get bad players out as in past few years.

Skipworth deserves a recall.. No changes will happen this week hopefully, but Skippy would be my first inclusion back to the side if something were to happen.

Also Hurley has only just got back, terrible form and an injury would be the only thing that would make knighta take him out of the side.

NLM has much better skills and has more gut running speed than Skipwoth has
They're two separate things.
Gut running is running to the point of pure exhaustion; think Ben Cousins, Shane Crawford or Robert Harvey.
Running speed is self-explanatory; think Lovett, Davey, Winderlich.

NLM has neither of these qualities.

Ahead of who, no-one in our 22 he is better than plus even NLM has more matchwinning ability!

I'm just guessing NLM's ability to break a line is what you call match winning. But I don't believe he's ever won a game for us off his own back. He certainly does have a quality to him that is both exciting and confronting, but his efforts 1 on 1 in defence is terrible, his body on body is shite and he often can struggle in pressure situations..

I say Skipworth is worthy of being a priority inclusion because he's experienced, skillful, footy smart, confident and has general hunger for the ball..

I've posted this before but I think it's pretty relevant here.

On Skipworth, I honestly don't believe he brings enough to the team. Fair enough, when the team is doing well he gets involved, gets a lot of possessions and kicks goals but when the team isn't going well he, in my opinion, is one of the first players to go missing. He has a poor workrate and does not do enough defensively. He can get into dangerous positions and kick goals, this is only a result of him not bothering to pick up a man. He also doesn't go at the ball or man hard enough considering he has a pretty nuggetty ("strong bodied") frame.

you sir are an idiot! sorry for stating the obvious everyone lese

Slattery was injured against the Swans. If he isn't fit you could bring in Skipworth but I would like to see Houli or Myers given a run. However, Knights has said they will continue to play in the VFL. I would like to see Zaka brought back into the side but at the moment there is probably not a place for him.

Myers was very good in the VFL last weekend so he would be first in line for a recall, I'd imagine. Skipworth who is apparently returning from injury would also be putting his hand up. Houli was good in the VFL but not great, same applies for NLM - so I doubt they will be considered this week, barring injury.

Not at the moment, no. To be honest I think he has already showed enough this year for us to be totally satisfied with drafting him. Perhaps the wear and tear of a long season is starting to take hold. He was good in the VFL on the weekend but certainly not good enough to warrant an instant recall.

As for Eade predicting a 50-goal shootout at Etihad Stadium - he has to be kidding himself, surely? This would probably be the worst possible result for us if this occurs. We have tall forward line targets who on their day can kick bags of goals, but I think they have more forward line options which can hurt us, especially with Monfries out of the side. I can see 16 or 17 goals winning this game.

Small forwards worry me a little bit in the lead up to this Footscray game. The Doggies have got 46% of their goals this year from small to mid size forwards, which is no surprise. However defending small forwards is one of our weaknesses IMO.
In three of our more disappointing losses the small forwards have been pivotal for the opposition;

RD 1 Port 15(total team goals) - Motlop 4, Grey 2 and Ebert 2. Small forwards % of total goals - 53%
RD 10 Cats 20(total team goals) - Johnson 6 and Byrnes 2. Small forwards % of total goals - 40%
RD 11 Crows 21(total team goals) - Knights 5and Douglas 2. Small forwards % of total goals - 33%

Now this doesn’t mean all that much as we have had wins were opposition small forwards have done a bit eg Tigers and the 2nd Blues game. But getting our match ups correct is going to be the key factor.

Johno - Pears (I think John has lost a step and this would be a good challenge for young Tateworm)
Aka - Spike (Most logical match up I think)
Josh Hill - Dempsey (what a mouth watering match up)
Higgans - Houli (IMO Houli has the speed, lateral quickness and endurance to go with Higgans)

Houli is probably the only controversial match up, but he has(by all reports) been playing well at Bendigo and he has done some good jobs on small forwards this year so I think he should be give a shot.

For the bigger forwards;
Hahn - Hurley (Will test Hurleys strength but a challenging match up for him in his 3rd game)
Welsh - Slatts ( if Welsh plays)

Fletch will be required to match up on the tall’s floating forward eg Minson and Hudson and that will give him the opportunity to zone off a bit.

So my;
ins = Houli
outs = it's hard but I think Slatts might need to be squeezed out, he might be injured anyway. If Welsh plays Slatts might be needed but I think between Hocking and Fletch they can cover him.

Yeah if you get enough of the ball you must be a gun!!!

Stanton's accountability is poor.

What is Stanton's role in the side???

If it is to get the ball as much as possible and not be accountable, then I would like to see Houli in that role because he would be more damaging, and that is the reason why he is in the seconds - to work on the defensive side of his game.

If Stanton is such a hard runner, why not give him a run with role and make him accountable in trying to stop his opponent getting the ball while getting it himself!!!

Just saw the coaches votes from Saturday - Stanton 7 votes.

So Knights and Roos must have liked his game, but they obviously weren't watching him as closely as you were.

They are stupid statistics, you talking about small leading forwards or crumbing forwards. All very different types of players too. Ever thouhgt they kicked goals easily cos the midfield didnt apply any pressure with the ball coming in??

I put a disclaimer saying that they didn't mean that much other than small to medium forwards kicking a good % of goals against us in some of our worst losses. I think it's universally know that we dont defend small to medium forwards all that well and the point is we are coming up against a team with the best array of small forwards in the league. Maybe that's why we haven't beaten them since the great Ty Zantuck pull on our jumper.... ;)
