National second tier comp would be ideal mate. It’s been discussed and still is being discussed at executive level with the AFL. Ideal model is just align the AFL seconds and the AFLW to play same day and same oppo as the seniors. Can then ticket the fixture to add value to the fans. It’s coming but not for a number of years. The Jordan Croft situation this week really highlights how poor the VFL setup is as a second tier to the AFL.
As a young player on the verge of senior selection, the experience of traveling to Perth with the senior team and participating in the preparations is no doubt valuable, but it sucks that it costs him another game of competitive experience.
It wouldn't be so bad, but as the AFL season enters R5, it'll leave a fit, healthy Croft with 1 game played for the season, against poor opposition.
There's got to be a better system for developing AFL listed players to be getting invaluable competitive experience early in seasons in real games.
