So now Brown was touched up because Milne never got the ball??

No, Brown was touched up whenever the ball did come to Milne, he just didn't get 5 goals because our midfield didn't let it down there very often.

You guys are seriously overrating Brown's performances this year. He's been ok, but certainly nowhere near Doughty last year, and it's rose spectacle work to try and suggest otherwise. Not saying he'll never be better than Doughty, just that he isn't as good as him now, and the lack of an effective lock down small defender contributed to the decline of our rebounding defenders, who had to commit more time to defending. Laird has alleviated some of this.

Nobody is saying he is better than Doughty just yet we are saying he is better defensively than Reilly which is a much lower standard ;)

Or perhaps your wrong. Club dropped Reilly and mentioned he wasn't getting the job done on his opponent while Brown has played every game.

Reilly was dropped and replaced with another attacking defender in Jaensch, who also didn't get the attacking job done, and was poor at defending.

"If you do a really simple comparison of what he was able to do last year and what he's doing this year in terms of being able to shut his man down and get off and intercept – he probably hasn't been at that [same] level."

Spending too much time deep defending, and not enough time forward attacking and intercepting. From Bicks himself. Brown has been serviceable to ok, nothing more. Laird has been the difference since settling. Laird looks like a 150 game player already, let alone being a future 200 gamer. Brown I wouldn't wager on making 100 games just yet.

Thanks for proving my point Reilly was not getting the job done offensively or defensively so he was dropped. If he could defend he could have played and they could have dropped Brown for Jaensch to try and create more drive but obviously Brown was a better defensive option.

Reilly was dropped for not getting the job done offensively. It's why he was dropped for an offensive player. Pretty sure I just said that using a few more words.

If he was doing a good job defensively why didn't they shift him into Browns spot and drop Brown for an offensive player?

Answer: Radar can't defend to save himself and Brown is a far better option!

Watched the first half again and noticed this -

Freo almost always had loose men on the defensive side of most contests, viz.
At Throw-Ins they had 1 loose x 5 (times)
2 loose x 6
3 loose x 2

At Stoppages they had 3 loose x 4
4 loose x 1

At Protracted Contests they had 1 loose x 2
2 loose x 4

I couldn't be arsed repeating to accurately figure just where the Crows lined up but I can be pretty sure we did not have an obvious 'loose' man at any of the above on any side of the contest. Freo manned us up but still managed to get spare numbers. Make of that what you will.

-ooOoo-

The other thing I noted was how when we had a mark or free, on almost every occasion, we almost politely and with little obvious haste, backed up the full distance behind the mark, looked somewhat uncertain, showed exasperation, and took more than 3x the time Freo did to move the ball on (or sideways, or back). Freo, without obviously playing-on, quickly moved back and sideways a couple of steps and delivered the ball pronto. Unlike Crows, Freo were rarely called to play-on in the similar situation, because they were presented with options by their teammates. Our slowness is predictable and easy to defend against - almost surely because we do not work, run and spread to provide options.

As RearAdmiral says we rarely 'take the game on' and worse we very rarely 'take the man on'. I cannot see Crows progressing without significant changes to the manner and rate at which we move the ball to advantage! Just hope 2014 is different.

Brown was flogged up and down 3 weeks in succession by Milne, Ballantyne and Thomas, and only a few very fortunate bounces of the ball prevented Ballantyne from having a 4 goal game.

Brown has done some nice things, but consistently beat his man is not one of them.

Ignorance is not a defence. You clearly haven't watched a game all year.
And yet you are blaming Brown for Thomas having a good game which is odd because I swear Thomas kicked 2 goals on Otten and one on Smith.
Last year Milne kicked 3.3 from 13 touches on Doughty as opposed to 2 goals and 11 touches on Brown.
Last week Walters apparently smashed Brown, kicking a huge two goals. One of these however was on Brown, the other Laird.

Yes Ballantyne beat Brown but so what, everyone gets beaten every so often. Hell I remember Paul Stewart flogging Reilly last year when he had to defend one on one.

As for your contention that Reilly's form dropped because he had to cover for Brown is almost as embarrasing as Vader given Doughty credit for Smith beating his man.

Are there any rational posters on this board anymore? In what way did Tambling deserve to go out before Grigg? Because he's older, even though he played a good game last week and provided some good drive from defense?
Embarrassing no 2
