Changes v Freo Anchors

Have to think similar to this.
Maybe even an Andy Otten out letting both Smack and LJ play.

Only because LJ offers much more as a forward then Otten does. Ottens been good but he isnt a better option forward then LJ

I get your logic but I dont quite think its fair. Otten played a fairly good game and its kindof unfair dropping him aftera good performance while players like Jaensch got multiple mediocre games before being dropped. It doesnt exactly send a good message to Otten.

Otten played a valuable game, and while this doesn't guarantee (with Sando) his spot for next week, I think he will stay. We are reluctant to make changes from winning performances, but the key thing is - Sando likes footballers who can primarily execute the defensive side of the game, including forwards.

It shouldn't be about fairness, it should be about what gives us the best chance of winning.

I have been on Otten being out of the side since before the last Freo game.

For me we are far far too slow with Rutten/Talia/Otten down back. We looked a lot better having a quicker backline against Geelong of Rutten/Talia/Brown/Tambling/Hendo (with Laird/Smith playing back there and in the middle). This will be even more important on the the big Subiaco ground against a Freo side that doesn't really have big key forwards.

As to putting him forward. It has worked as a bit of a stopgap against Carlton (3.1) and Geelong (2.0) but in both of those games he has had a few absolute shanks kicking for goal. IIRC - of his 5 goals 3 have come from marks in the goalsquare and 2 have been arsey snaps. His actual goalkicking is pretty piss poor.

For me it should be the following changes:

Out: Thompson (inj), Otten, Mackay
IN: Kerridge, LJ, Smack

Having Jacobs, Jenkins, Lynch, Smack, LJ will really stretch Freo - especially with an underdone Sandi and no McPharlin.

What will happen:

Out: Thommo (inj)
In: Kerridge

Anyone else get the feeling Danger will be a surprise inclusion?

Nope not this week and I have a sneaky feeling it wont be next either. Hard to see us making too many changes, Sando doesn't after a win. Hopefully Thommo goes out because he can't cover the ground anymore., Kerro comes in to run with one of their midfield monsters.

What's the weather forecast for the Freo game? If OK, I think we should go taller in our forward line to stretch Freo as they are missing McFarlane. Smack needs to come back in as can also use to run around Sandilands too.

Defence has me thinking as they are likely to play the resting ruckman, which only needs 1 of Truck/Talia, with Otten being suited to Mayne (keep Hendo free).

Do we throw 1 of Truck/Talia to CHF & give Jenkins a rest?

Would use Porps as sub this week, given quiet last week.

And who better than the team he kicked his first three against :p

lol. Thats what I was alluding too. ;)

The semi-trailer does not have a good match up in defence and could be a suprise packet in attack. If the wheels come off, simply pull the Truck off the road change tyres in park it at FB.

Freo are just so unbalanced at the moment its hard to match up on them. It would almost be better if Pav was in then we wouldn't look so slow down back.

Otten has to stay forward if he's in the team otherwise we'll have to sent Truck or Talia forward (which is a loss for us because they marshall the backline so well).

I think we have to back our current defenders in to win in the air and then our smalls to be really tight on the ground. Talia, Brown and Laird are a good chance to do this and are all in good form. Truck just has to stick to the resting ruck so he doesn't get turned around and our midsand half backs have to run back like the season depends on it and not let their midfielders score their goals.

10 goals will probably win this game. Freo will struggle to get more without big midfield bags or a Mayne miracle.

FFS is anyone on this board going to acknowledge that Otten was moved forward to do a defensive tagging job on Harry Taylor?

Why is no one giving him credit for executing the job he was sent there to do - and topped it off with 2 goals to assist himself by ensuring Taylor had man him up.

People thinking he will be dropped are totally deluded and cannot possibly have paid attention to his role.

9:40 into the video, Sando basically brushed aside the BF board main gripe this year; not selecting for 2014 and beyond considering our position on the ladder.

I didn't see any outcry to this statement, or did I just miss it?

I wouldn't rule out that he's just boosting confidence in any youngsters that get a game between now and the end of the season. It'd be pretty ordinary to get a call up and have it in the back of your mind that it's a charity game.

Especially if they have legitimately earned it, you don't want any doubt in their mind that they've done so.

He did sound genuine though.

Good call. Two goals is a good return on its own but combined with his job on Taylor it becomes a great game for Otten.

Doubt LJ would have defensive side to his game. Not sure if we can play a defensive tallnin the backlines every game but we shouldnt need to. Its a good option to have though and its good to know Otten can get the job done.

I would be looking at Johnston this week. I don't know how fit he is, I don't know how often he is involved in team drills to know our system when our forwards are involved in the press? All I know is our forward line has cost us games this year and i know that freo are defensively in a league of their own.

We have the ability to win the ball and to get it forward against anyone but our system around the f50 line is shocking. We need to pull a fast one here or Freo will murder us on the rebound,. ala Syderny..

Johnston seems the logical choice. Patterson has alot of space which will suit him..But is he up to it?

LJ simply has to play this weekend and for a string of games. We need to know whether this guy can cut it at AFL level.

Baptism of Fire. Elimination Type final games against Freo then Power.

He was on the cusp of getting selected when Tex went down and has since taken time to recover.

Sando needs to be brave and make a decision on not only the immediate future but for 2014.

If LJ fires it would just lift all out supporters for the impossible.

If we could somehow fall into the 8 and play Tiger team at the G which would probably suffocate or our 2nd dream final lol thanks Chad.

Ok I woke up, but thats what this Club is about dreaming the impossible.

Both Port and the Crows wont play finals this year, itll be one (them) or neither.

I think you have to understand that his move forward v cats was not a case of him being switched to a fwd per se, he was playing a role as a defensive forward. So don't judge him as a forward only, judge him on his role. Did Taylor influence the game as he usually does? I think Otten wins that one. In addition you want a player in this role to be a threat. He kicked 2 goals - had 15 poss. Tick.

As a comparison look at a Petrenko. If the match up is right he is capable of being a competent defensive fwd IMO.
I get what his role was and it did work. The week before he played forward and had 4 possessions.

My point is our key position forwards should be forwards not defensive forwards. We only play two key forwards and it will place too much pressure on Jenkins. Besides there aren't too many Key Defenders who play like Taylor that require a minder.

If Tex was playing would Otten be up forward? No, their defenders would need to mind our forwards. We've got a key forward who hasn't had a decent run, he's played one game for us. If we haven't already marked him as a delist we need to play him to see if he's worth retaining. Also our kicking for goal is shit and LJ would help that.

Personally I can't see Otten being dropped but if he stinks it up this week, do we move him back?

I think your right he won't be dropped, and he will only go forward if there is a match up for him... Possibly Johnson ?

Otherwise I'm not sure there will be a match up for him in defence. With Pav out they will be fairly small meaning Tambo effectively takes Ottens spot.

Like you say not too many Taylor match ups but this week might be one.

I agree though that LJ should get a run its just not a like for like with Otten

If everyone in here thinks LJ should play means that he wont. Which is going to be massively disappointing.

Sando may want to keep him for the Showdown, but by then our season may be shot depending on results.
I think the Blues could lose against GCS which will open up the jostling for bottom 8 positions.

I dont care how we make it to the 8, whether it be courtesy of ASADA or Power choke, I just want to get that September feeling again.

Geez it was a good time for me last year.

Funny that some of the posters who bagged the selectors all season regarding Lyons now think he would be an ideal sub candidate. Maybe the selectors do know a little more about their players than you (i.e. obviously they have always known about his fitness issues)? What a shock!

Genius, or absolute clutz? :p not sure if youve seen some of his set shots for goal while hes been up forward this year but they are woeful! I think ive seen him kick more out on the fulls than actual goals from set shots lol. He could be a very handy swingman for us as he can be damaging at both ends of the ground, its just that he needs to get his goal kicking in order if im to have any confidence in his ability to put scoreboard pressure on when up forward.

like i said, it would be a secret, but he showed a little x-factor up there. As ridiculous as it sounds, 1 big play like that mark can really make a player (confidence-wise).

would just love to see him really become a champ, seems a good honest team man.

Hey guys sorry to intrude and I know this isn't the dream team thread so I'm be sorry! I currently have Thompson in my fantasy elite side. I heard that Sanderson said they'll keep playing Thompson even though he is injured. If he continues to play, what kind of averages are expected? Close to 100?

Again my apologies I'm in a dire situation at the moment,

Ps please destroy freo :)
