I guess we'll never know. nor does it matter as we both know Brown will come back in. So do you think we beat freo next week?
I have no idea anymore. We are easily more than capable and Freo are going as average as us. Id reckon we are 55-45 to win because we arent a terrible team.

still holding faith. You're doing better than me. I don't see us getting within 6 goals. They smashed us at the G. Now it's our turn in Perth. I'm not looking forward to it. But if we do win, top 4 becomes a less faint chance.

They lost so Sydney Collingwood and Stkilda at home, nearly lost to Port at home aswell. They really arent great, doesnt mean we wont lose but its not exactly mission impossible

Is he? Gus was pretty crap on the wing most of the year hes only really gotten good behind the footy. JJ is atleast on par with Gus as a winger this year if not better

Yeah fair point. I'd back Gus to play better then JJ as a winger though...

My broader issue is we seem to have too many mid/small defenders but an issue moving the ball decently in the midfield.

As someone else pointed out, dropping Salem could be an answer but at his best, he's one of our better players and the FD will back him in to recapture that form. Dropping Riv could be another answer.

I'd also like to see more risk taking and kicking ability through the midfield, hence JJ's solid but very safe style could be something that makes way.

I think our issue is that its Oliver, Trac, Viney and Langdon every week that get it 20 or more times. Its never ANB, Salem, Fritsch, Sparrow, Bowey etc that dominate a game with the ball disposal number wise. So basically our whole game revolves around how well those main 4 guys play and use it.

Kind of like how the Australian Test Cricket team relies on bulk runs from Smith, Warner and Labuschagne. Those three get held and it’s struggle street.

That and then blaming the bowlers when the batsmen make 100.

Our midfield dump kicks it alot on transition and Oliver and Trac and horrible and getting involved in the link chains from D50 and doing any damage by foot. Instead everyone here thinks getting a key forward will fix their issues

If you want to fix the wing, figure out what the hell is wrong with Langdon. Has played one good game since his ribs went in that Thomas tackle vs North. And so has the team. He is the barometer. He’s not even being tagged anymore like against Collingwood, he’s just ineffectual atm. JJ and Brayshaw are both ‘good’ wingers but only Brayshaw can play as an elite HBF.

Ben Brown shouldn't come back in. He will, but he shouldn't. No surprise that we score one of our highest scores without this dude dropping marks. Weideman kicked 3 which Brown has done only 3 times in 14 games. Weideman is at least quicker than Brown once the ball hits the deck.

Weid was uncompetitive just like brown was you clown.

Loved the Weidy dont even fly at the footy in the second half tactic, just lurk out the back for a handball

Blokes a headcase. Plays a good first half, then beaten a few times in the air by Gardner in the third and completely gives up even trying to play like a key forward in the last quarter and a bit.

I'd almost be tempted to go with Weid as second KPF/ruck instead of Jackson, with Brown coming in. Would create some noise externally but Jacko's form has been awful for weeks (not that Weid has been amazing or anything).

Lever back for Tommo.

I'd also be tempted to move Gus to the wing instead of JJ, and bring Bowey back to defence.

Chandler's VFL form has been immense and he deserves a chance to at least be sub.

I'm sure Goody will be pretty conservative, however.

At some time, I'd be tempted to give Turner another go, as Sub; for utility balance. Back, or up front. The kid has a read hot go.

I see him becoming a 3rd tall defender, soon enough; and his attack at the footy in the air is really welcome. Now I don't know if he played this week or not, but his skillset is something we want.

I could see him being a great foil to help Weide up forward, or can go back to replace any other 3rd tall back options.

FOR this week... I think its time now for Chandler to replace Bedford as this weeks Sub, IF not in the 22...

No real issue, just trying to find a way to maximise our strengths. Gus is a better winger than JJ (certainly last year) and I think Bowey's kicking skills are needed in our backline.

I think our defence works best with Brayshaw on the wing, and playing that wing to defence sweeper role.
This allows Salem and Hibbo to be more offensive. Our defenders can get higher up with wingman Brayshaw covering off.

We then get away up the ground with better use. Brayshaw has been excellent in defence as sweeper, but we lack the quarterback role of Salem, as they're roles are tangled up.

I think Weide needs to put on another 7 - 8 Kgs, but in his thighs, and hips. Lots of squats for the Weide preseason coming.
I'm of the opinion he is a natural 2nd ruck firstly... way before being a fine tuned tall forward.

The other year they got TMc to put weight on, and build his leg power, and it didn't suit his gamestyle. He had a poor year.
But I think it will suit Weide... to be shaped more like his grandad was.

This way he can hold his ground around boundary throw-ins, and also up forward in the packs. He is currently too skinny to play 2nd ruck around the ground imo.

Turner as sub for utility balance? Bloke has only played back in senior footy. How can it be good balance if he's got no experience playing forward or mid or wing or ruck? [emoji38]

We are very good chance to win. In fact I am pretty confident we will. They’re not going well. We play well on the road. I think we are more likely to beat them than to beat Collingwood.

Because he will go at the footy in the air.

He reads the flight well and so this should translate into doing it as a 2nd or even 3rd tall up front. To run as support to shield Weide, or to go at the ball when he's got a clear run at it. He could be a replacement to Melk.

This is how TMc became our tall forward; from his defender days. He and Pederson gave us the chop-out up front, due to injuries to Hogan, and to Gawn in the ruck.
This was the beginning of Melbourne playing a tall winger (TMc). And Pederson playing ruck and half forward.

It resulted in us taking marks across the centre of the ground and from kickouts, and led to us being masters of marking the highball around the wings.
Maxy has since taken that mantle, but is currently being monstered, and double teamed, when going for those marks out of defence.

Jacko recently was starting to take a few one grabbers across the wing, but since has gotten crossed up in his head or somewhere, and has dropped his ball.

So with BBB out injured and perhaps retuning, its time to try someone else in support of our FF; just a taste to see where things sit.

I see van Rooyen as a TMc replacement for CHF. He'll be getting close imo, but my gut says not yet for him. As he is touted as a forward of our future; where as Turner has the skills required, but is not expected to be a star forward.

Less pressure = less expectations of himself, so he can play Free in spirit.

Thats my reasoning.

Oh yeah, his 0.7 goals a game over a 10 week period when our season was on the line tell me that in fact, he does quite the opposite.
Hahaha you just made this stat up. Hes kicked more than 7 goals over every 10 week stretch of games this season no matter where you choose to place it.
