Changes v Geelong

Last time around Rutten got Tomahawk and Talia got Pods. They kicked 1 goal between them which was from a dicey free kick. So we will probably go the same way again if Pods plays. Rutten usually takes the more gorilla forwards whereas Talia is better suited to the leading forward.

I think our key defenders match up well on the Geelong guys, but it's the small and mid-size players like Johnson, Chapman, Duncan and Smedts who are probably a bigger concern to me.

Its funny you say that, I'm thinking the same at the other end. Given Tippett's absence, I'm confident on our tall backs vs Tex and Jenkins. I know Scarlett isn't playing due to a brain fade, but I'd start Lonners on Walker and Taylor on Jenkins and rotate if need be. It's your mediums and smalls that will do the most damage I think, not to mention your midfield pushing up.

I find it quite amazing how much of a connection our 2 clubs have had over the years.

IIRC Bruce Lindner was the first or second interstate recruit signed by the club in 1991, he came from Geelong. Then there obviously Malcolm Blight and his relationship between the 2 clubs and taking over from Blight was Gary Ayres. Now we have Brenton Sanderson who played a huge part in developing his football and coaching career at the cattery.

Also, if you believe urban legend, Mark Thompson took his senior players aside after the 2006 round 13 game where we beat Geelong and told them that they need to play like that before they could amount to anything. And this was the key moment that opened a few players eyes. He also dissected the Neil Craig game plan from 2005 and 2006 over the 2006/07 summer and told his players we are going to use this style of play and training and look where it got them.

Now, with Brenton Sanderson bringing a monumental amount of Geelong game plan and intellectual property to the club, that baton is getting passed back.

May the 2 clubs continue to have a healthy and successful working relationship.

In my order of ranking it goes:

Sam Shaw (is best 22 with a fully fit list)
Richard Tambling (has been in form at Sturt and we need to see what he has left).
Matthew Jaensch (is just plain crap defensively 1 on 1).
Luke Thompson (can someone else comment on his form... I got nothin)

Jaensch and Tambling are not 'like for like'...they would replace a Doughty, Mackay, even Smith type.

Shaw is the only option without major weakness.

The others have ability but also an obvious weakness:

Thompson (dodgy skills)
Johnston (questionable intensity)

That sucks as it (IMO) looked like he was regaining some much needed confidence in his body. However, 6 weeks is no time and it could be much worse.

I'd agree on that. Made sound decisions and wasn't panicked and fumbly like we had seen previously.

Has he played much defence this year at SANFL level?

He's been booting goals but I haven't heard of him going down back.

Lynch has the exposed SANFL form in that position and should be the first to go in if Shaw doesn't.

Yet lynch comes in our side as a forward.

If Sando rated Lynch as a defender surely he would of had a run down back already?

I would pick Lynch but i think Luke Thompson might get the nod. Has been in very good form for WWT. Lucky we are getting injuries in spots we have depth.

Afc just tweeted that Otten had a knee op this morning and will be out for up to six weeks!

goddamn it. All second half on the weekend he was fidgeting with his knee. Discussed it with brother and old man and we all agreed that surely he wouldn't still be out there if he wasn't right. <sigh> Maybe he couldn't make it any worse.
