He got the grand total of seven, I mean SEVEN disposals in that game. He kicked two goals but did nothing else. He got two other kicks for the entire game, for goodness sake!!

It was a game that supports my thoughts on McStay but it was too long ago so I thought it wasn't relevant.

I should apologise for my post because the start was a little smart arse.

On another point, I would have liked to put up both original posts but I don't know how to do it. I often see a post with multiple quotes which often allows the development of interesting arguments. Putting jackess' original post and my response post, up together, would make the discussion much more followable. Could someone give directions?

jeezus

Another armchair critic that thinks fantasy points win matches.

Maybe support the crows if you place a high importance on the stats sheet. They have guns like the Crouch brothers

Because he wont do so at the expense of McStay (or to a lesser extent Hipwood).
And yet when Stef was out he put in Archie instead. There are a lot of players who have contracts here for next year, Skinner is not one of them, and if he's to survive the seemingly likely list reduction, you'd think he needs to play at some point.

Then it's up to him to force his way into the side. Given McStays limited output there's a chance for him

You'll never get your second like with posts like that.

Racking up likes on here would be relatively easy. I’d just stick to having a go at Ah Chee, birch and Rayner then argue the toss on McStay.
My comment still stands on witho. He had a poor showing in the finals last year and by his own admission used it as fuel in the off season to train harder however came back under done after the Covid break.
All I have seen so far is a high draft pick that has talent but is lazy in games, both with his apparent elite kicking as well as his defensive pressure and apparently looks like he doesn’t put the work in away from the track. To top it off he looks like he is running on the spot ala Lester so at this stage of the season isn’t bringing too much to the table to warrant a recall. At least Ah Chee is willing to get his head over the ball and create a contest.
I hope I am wrong in the long run on him as we desperately need a rebounding defender that is damaging but I can’t see him being that player.

I think the jury is still out. Must have a great work ethic to be the traveling emergency, but he's also not getting a game at a time where list size is set to be reduced and we've got Fullarton outperforming him as a cat B and Ballenden being preferred in the ruck.

Sam is a great dude and I really hope he makes it, but am not convinced he will.

I wouldn’t say Fulton has been outperforming him. Skinner had a great preseason and was first cab of the rank then before doing an ankle. Ballenden got the jump but Skinner has turned that around since and is now first cab of the rank again. He just needs an opportunity. We’ve been incredibly lucky that neither McStay nor Hipwood have been injured. An injury there and Sam gets his chance.

Everyone's got their own personal opinions on players that aren't in our top 12 or 13 , misguided or otherwise. I don't see any problem with airing concerns , that's what a forum's for. Players aren't perfect, have different abilities and physical limitations, you can only get them to do what they can do . I think expectations seem to be getting a little high since we've suddenly become a contender. It's only footy and the main thing is that they're competitive, enjoying it and improving. Which I think they are.

Let’s bring witho in so he can get toweled up by Daniels again and remind us that he doesn’t have a defensive side to his game nor any pace for that matter.

Witho is much much better than your post suggests. He will come again and be better for his time out of the best 22.

You've actually got it backwards, you have to defend the whipping boys and the likes will flow, particularly if you can do so in response to a negative poster.

In fairness to you this is a far more balanced post which I tend to agree with much of...personally I don't see Witherden as a best 22 player although I did think last year he bought a toughness to his game which we hadn't seen before. Think he still has a future with us but the speed at which he fell out of the side may be ominous.

We persisted with him for a long time . I'd like another look at him. We don't really know the reason he's not in there at the moment except obviously they believe the players in there give us a better chance of winning. It did seem telling that they recruited Birchall and Ah Chee in the off season and neither Answerth or Witherden have been in since. Injuries and fatigue will present opportunities in this season.

You'd have to be naive to think Fagan Noble and co. didn't get extensive feedback from Hodge in the off season as to what was and wasn't working in our backline. Hence the acquisitions.

Our backline wasn't the problem on Saturday. We didn't take opportunities when we had the chance to bury them and our M/F was gassed by half time.

We will certainly get another look at him but you'd have to think there's some glaring inadequacies in his game at the moment which haven't improved this season. We obviously needed more run which is why went out and got Ah Chee so you would have to think until Witho provides some decent rebound he will remain in the seconds. It might also be as simple as we cannot have three underpaced backs with excellent foot skills (Birchall, Rich and Witho) and Alex is the third option of these players.

With Port's win over GWS, I'm even more nervous for this game.

Two teams that will be wanting a big bounce back win.

Yes GWS were disappointing and you think will be pumped up for next week at home. I am nervous especially if Lester is marking Green
I think Starc will take Greene.
Lester will be left with Himmelberg I reckon.

Our defense will be a bit different from the GWS final in 2019
These were the Lions defenders who played last year.
Rich, Gardiner, Andrews who all played last week
Adams, Hodge, Answerth, Witherden

i think Witherden in for Lester.

So: Rich - Gardiner - Andrews -
.....Starcevich - Birchall - Ah Chee & Witherden

Nick Robertsen successfully tagged Whitfield
Also de Boer successfully tagged Neale

What benefit do you see replacing Lester with Withderden?

If you think Fullarton is out performing him then you haven’t been paying attention...

I just don’t understand how Skinner has such a good preseason (according to Cornes, was BOG in our practice match) but then can’t crack into the 22... feel sorry for the kid. McStay has had 1 good game this year but manages to keep his spot after some very poor performances. I just don’t see why Fagan wouldn’t try Skinner out in that spot... I’m hoping this week McStay goes back to play on one of the three GWS talls, opening a forward spot for Skinner to come in and finally prove himself.

It seemed pretty obvious in The Roar Deal imo.
I think you’re forgetting though, as Skinner has been emergency for majority of weeks he has not been allowed to play reserves games. Just the fact that Skinner is and has been the emergency for the past 6 weeks or so highlights that he is next in line for a key forward spot

Fullarton is a Cat B and can't play unless a player suffers a LTI - unfortunately this week to McFadyen - depending on how things go, could see him getting his shot soon.

Not sure if you’ve seen Fullarton play, but imo he is just not up to it, he is thin and gets pushed aside way to easily, plays similarly to Hipwood so I’m not sure if I could see Fullarton get a game.

Stop right there when you mentioned Cornes.
