Clurey was custard against the Dogs. He's had a good run, and he will be back.

Ken clearly has the philosophy that if you are good enough you will knock down the selection door - and he has consistently shown he rewards those that have.

Clurey was amongst our best against the dogs.

Ken's philosophy, if that's what it is, will make us a very good SANFL side. But we don't play SANFL. If we had Michael Wundke or the Gowans brothers in their prime, they'd probably be knocking down the selection door in the way that Mitchell, Gray and Stewart have this year.

The results are plain to see. The AFL isn't the SANFL and selection shouldn't be based on SANFL form alone.

we have skinny O'shea 193cm or short but bulky Jonas 188cm to play KPD but **** all like that in our forward lines - ie Neade, S.Gray, White and Monfries and on the bench - Mitchell, Impey, and Krak . Johnny Butcher might be an emergency for a good reason.

I think we should be targeting a key forward from their list instead of Gold Coast, considering where they are at with their list they will probably be easier to deal with.

I don't think you'll get many people agreeing with you about Clurey. He was the shining light in a defence that got spanked.

Even if we knew for sure the Dixon deal was over the line, it's still the wrong decision to continue to ignore key forward development.

What seems to be the problem? You're all losing your shit because some rookie who was pick 30+ doesn't get a debut game when our forward line hasn't functioned with the structure of three talls in Schulz/Ryder/Westhoff all year? Or is it the fact that we've given a young defender a taste of AFL level football - like we did with Jack Hombsch - and don't want him to pick up bad habits and think that the way our shit defenders have been playing is the way he should play? Oh wait...no...it's the fact that Kane Mitchell is getting a game over spuds like Moore and Young. Well, Mitchell may be a spud too, but at least he gives 100% effort, which is more than the other two can say.

Premierships are decided by more than just who plays what player in a particular position. Our problems this year are nothing to do with selection in terms of skill level. It's all to do with form and heart. If we don't turn it around with the players that get selected every week, we're not going to win anything with this squad, because they are ALL THERE IS. Playing Harvey isn't going to magically improve the running of players. It's not going to magically improve their decision making.

The only selection that is a bit odd is Jonas, but he's in our best 22 when in form and improves the rest of the back six, and he can't possibly qualify for SANFL finals so I don't have a problem with his inclusion. As others have said, we're going back to the 2014 structure and not the 2015 'let's play another key forward because that'll improve our side!!!!111!' rigid, glacial shit that we have been doing by not playing another tall. Imagine the side with the following changes:

Mitchell out for Wines
O'Shea out for Polec

And it's pretty much the 22 that lined up to play against Hawthorn in last year's prelim, with Ryder replacing Lobbe. Krakouer gets in ahead of Impey.

Not sure what you guys are actually wanting from the selection panel. We're supposed to be gunning for a flag with this list, not babysitting players and bringing them up to speed when they don't deserve it.

I can only imagine the look of disbelief on O'Shea's face as he gave away a few silly frees last week has saved him in the eyes of the selection committee. Everyone's allowed one shocker as a re-adjustment game.

The coaches aren't infallible and they make mistakes all the time. If they didn't we'd be reigning premiers.

Dropping Clurey for Jonas is a clear mistake.

Picking Kane Mitchell was a mistake and has been a mistake every time we've done it.

Sorry janus, i usually like your posts but there was one statement that i had to call you up on.

Why not drop the defenders with bad habits instead? And keep the young defender who is playing well?

Again, we've spent the entire thread after 6 oclock arguing against the selections. Coaches aren't infallible (El_Scorcho, 2015) and blindly accepting their choices defeats the purpose of a footy discussion forum.

Not really. I see it that they are desperate to get Jonas back in the side and would rather play O'Shea because Ken doggedly backs his favourites, as evidenced by Lobbe and Jonas stringing together months of terrible games before finally getting dropped.

WTF!! .... Are you taking the Piss? .... I must have been watching a different match. Clurey has shown something since coming in, but he was spun a merry dance last week! He will be a port player for many years, and play many games for us. A spell in the Magpies after last week won't hurt, and will allow him to play finals. Sure people might disagree, but the insults to Ken and the club are nothing short of disgraceful, and for some posts, even stronger ... Disgusting!

FWIW I would have kept Jonas in the SANFL and played Clurey again. I wanted to see Frampton or Harvey in for Lobbe. I don't rate Mitchell at all.

I am just trying to be the devil's advocate and placate some of the anger on here with some alternative views, trying to get inside Ken and the selector's heads to make sense of the decision making.
