Prediction Changes v Hawks - Rd 22, 2021

Without Bruce I'd probably be okay with a forward line of
JJ English JUH
Weightman Naughton Wallis

Wallis brings that leadership and experience to bolster the forward line.
We definitely don’t need Wallis if we have 3 talls, along with Cody who is good on the lead. That position has to go to a fast pressure player. I’d have both Garcia & VDM in that spot (one on the bench). I hope VDM got through the VFL well last week and we could look to playing him in seniors this week or next.

Hopefully this gets a mention both internally and externally this week but the Hawks game will be our 2,000th V/AFL match. We are the last of the remaining classic 12 teams to reach this milestone and even though we shouldn't need any extra motivation but it would be nice to bring up this milestone with a win.
I couldn’t believe we were behind the Saints so I went to afltables.com to check. Is this the site you used?
The sites has
Saints - 2432 games
Hawks - 2034
WB - 1998

obviously the figures are last weeks. The Hawks figure I can believe given the finals they have played over the last 50 years but the Saints figure must be a mistake. Surely ( not calling you ...)

The Saints were in the league 28 years before we entered. We entered in 1925 with Hawthorn and North Melbourne, but those two teams have played way more finals than us. Unfortunately for our history one of our golden periods was in the 1920’s, before we entered the league and were considered maybe the best team in the land, but in an inferior league (although not the chasm between one tier to the next we now have).

Schache / Cordy to the forward line once Keath / Gardner is back.

Cordy forward. It worked well once before.

He doesnt need lots of goals, he needs to contest in the air and on the ground. He can do both.

I watched the 2016 finals highlights the other day and Zaine was serviceable up forward.

Forgive me if I've just completely blanked this period out of my life, but have we ever actually tried this at all relatively recently? IF Alex Keath is due to come back, could we try Cordy up forward?
This isn’t the worst idea once Keath and Gardner get back. Would rather Cordy go forward than Schache

We threw him forward a few times in 2018 and 2019.

His defensive effort for a ‘tall’ is very good. He’s just never going to take pack marks or kick a bag.

Did a good job keeping McGovern and Barrass honest in the 2016 elim final too (but Grundy ran amok with intercept marks in the GF).

Yes. My mistake. I was thinking we came in with Hawks and Saints but it was Hawks and North. Never mind me. Carry on.

Bont to CHF? He can be a focal point and bring that leadership and experience.

I think he’ll have to up his forward time a bit, but we are deep in the midfield, as much as we’d rather him be in there.

Getting Martin right for 4 weeks is critical now, but we need to otherwise hope one of Sweet/Young/Schache really step up. Those 3 are the only ones on the list that could allow us to use English more forward, otherwise we need to pull off an effective forward line out of our asses with what we’ve got and go in with 1.5 talls

It is now time for Dunks to step up he has 3 games back now and not unexpected been very quiet. We had a lot of passengers against the bombers Scott, Richards, JJ, Dunks, Cordy, Schache.

ins Weightman, Sweet, VDM
outs Bruce, Scott, JJ

Whichever way we go I think we now need to commit to a settled forward line and persist with it the next two weeks - we can’t be tinkering in a Qualifying Final

I didn’t see enough of the Swans game where Young spent some time in the ruck and forward but is pairing him and English an option and hope like hell big Stef makes it in another month an option?

It’s a serious possibility IMO. The question is how much do we lose in the midfield replacing Bont with Dunks & Treloar. Again on the weekend we saw that we have too many mids and it means that someone becomes pretty much invisible playing elsewhere. Treloar was a permanent wingman, Dunks played minimal mid time and was almost unsighted and Smith was down a bit.

Bont to CHF
English to the forwardline
Naughton to CHB
JUH keeps his place
Sweet comes in

might not happen this week but I’d be looking at something like that for next year. We can’t afford all of Naughton’s missed finishes up front and he’d be a star down back
English isn’t a ruck and with Dunkley and Ads back we should use their chemistry in the guts more often.

Yesterday was a total shocker in every sense of the word. not to mention the injury to Bruce. I think that Bevo might do one of these: Schache forward because he has become somewhat confident and creates lots of space, though would expect him to be in the backline with Keith. The other is to bring Sweet and rotate English forward. Another is to shift Cordy forward to become a pressure and spoiling forward ala 2016. Martin I think is doubtful to come back. Finally, moving Bont forward for extended periods of time. cannot see Wallis forward. Just too slow unfortunately. also, as someone else expect the unexpected with Bevo

Name a KPF that was moved to defence because he missed shots on goal. Franklin, Richardson, Cloke (I could name about 10 more) for starters all were problematic kicks at goal and yet the the prospect of moving them to defence was never even thought about.

It wont happen. Especially when Aaron is an erratic field kick and all our good ball users are specifically moved to defence.

Even more so now that Bruce has gone down.

The difference being Naughton is a proven excellent backman and has demonstrated that prior to being moved forward…..

Bontempelli has kicked 20 and English 16 this year. Feel free to revisit your statement when you’ve considered what they have put on the board. I’m all ears to a better plan that might have more than a 5 word sentence……
