Lester may have been good in patches, but my god, some of his elementary errors were deplorable i.e. spilling simple uncontested marks, particularly the one in front of the MCC which was a standout.
Yep, clocked that one. It was right in front of me. Players should be ably to take uncontested chest marks.

I hope I'm wrong but N Robbo looked to pull up lame in a chase about six minutes from full time. Was immediately benched and stayed until the siren.

May have been cramp or something, but could have been more?
Spoke to Nick today
Was cramping a lot towards the end
That was his second game in 5 weeks due to NEAL bye, injury and travelling emerg for the west coast game.
I reckon he'll be better for the run.

Bewick, Cutler, Paparone IN
Schache rested
Other 2 outs too early to call
Paparone forward

Given we dropped players not putting in and then Paparone only gets one tackle, it doesn't seem to make much of an argument for a return.

Those tackling stats in the NEAFL are a bit odd. Often quite low. Not exactly sure why.

Do we expect Paparone to be a big tackler? He's always been a very soft outside footballer.

In the seconds I'd hope they are, to be honest, given they should be racking up disposals at least.

Okay keep Paps in the 2s but play him forward FFS.

I don't agree. He certainly looked like he was playing through injury yesterday. He had a dip but he's struggling overall. Well be low his best.

His running looks off, but I thought his kicking and decision making was much improved yesterday compared to the previous weeks.

If he has lost run or evasiveness, I think the HBF isn't the worst place for him to work through it. We can at least use his kicking without expecting him to win clearances. We're too young a team to shelve him if he can play a role.

The reserves got thrashed again so can anyone actually say that there is some talent to bring into the seniors. A cricket team (Barnawartha North) whose games I umpire have a ideal way of deciding who plays if too many turn on the day. They draw names out of a hat. Who ever does not get a game hangs around all day drinking the clubs beer.

Any Brisbane player who misses out could go and practice kicking for goal at a local ground.

I think this is the way forward for the Lions. It could not make the situation any worse.

Schache did look like he needs a rest, so happy for him to have a week off and come back against Carlton (means I get to see him play ;)). Evans would probably be the first out. He was pretty non sighted at the ground. Would have him out before Mayes or even Taylor (who wasn't great)

Hopefully he will get a string of games in the seniors so we can see what he can do once he gets used to the pace again.

Always happy to be wrong when the end result is favourable.

It's been a long time since Hawks been away against Brisbane. Think it will be closer than most think.
I'm expecting a tough contest. We have been down for weeks now. Anyway, hope we win of course.

No injuries both ways.

Yeah, Hawthorn are 3 and 9 at the Gabba against the Lions since the merger. You have also only beaten us at the Gabba once in the last 15 years (just don't tell anyone you haven't played there for 8 years). Obviously the Hawks are no chance.

Sydney beat us by 3 points, and beat Hawthorn by 14 points.

Favourites!

It's been over eight years since Hawthorn last played the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. That game was way back in Round 5 2008 on a warm and humid Saturday night with over 30,000 fans at the game.

Lance Franklin kicked 8 goals and 6 behinds for Hawthorn and Daniel Bradshaw kicked 7 goals and 4 behinds for the Lions in what was a high scoring game with Hawthorn winning 19.16.130 to Brisbane 17.16.118.

The only player who played that night for Brisbane that's still active is Daniel Merrett. For Hawthorn Mitchell, Lewis, Birchall and Rioli all played in that game, with Hodge and Roughead being the other players who also played in that game but are currently out injured.

How are you looking selection wise this week, improved ?

We will likely go with the same team that played against Sydney. At the moment we are playing average footy. We've only won 16 of 36 quarters this season.

The Lions effort against Sydney a few weeks ago at the Gabba was impressive in a game in which they should've won. A long list of injuries have ruined the Lions starting team. What may go against Hawthorn this week is most of our team haven't played at the Gabba before. This season we have had fairly average first quarters. If Hawthorn are off their game early and Brisbane are switched on, then I can see this game going right down to the wire. What's hurt Brisbane this season I think is not having any key position players available due to injury with players like Gardiner, Andrews, Cutler, Close, Freeman and Beasley all missing chunks of the season and it forces you to change your team structure around which Brisbane haven't been able to adapt to so far like up forward and down back.

I went and watched the Melbourne vs Brisbane game on Sunday. There were some positives to take out of that match.

- Ben Keays looks to be a solid half forward flanker. He just needs to working on his kicking for goal.
- Jonathan Freeman is a strong marking key target up forward. I think he took about 6 contested marks.
- Rhys Mathieson was solid on debut.
- Daniel McStay is improving with each game in defense. Although I personally believe he needs to be used as a genuine key forward alongside Freeman.

Who's in the selection frame for the Lions in this game; Rockliff and Cutler?

I know Schache will be great for us.....eventually.

However, he was crap last week . Was rarely sighted and when he was, he couldn't hold a mark, regularly fumbled ground ball as well as NOT laying a shepherd in front of our goals that would have presented Lester with a walk in goal.

I think he should have another "rest" next week.

I don't agree that a run in the NEAFL will do nothing for his confidence. The poor bugger looks like he has zero of that right now anyway.
