Changes v Hawks

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I'm pretty sure I saw Lloyd doing this on ANZAC day. What's worse, he should have handballed it to Davey. Pretty sure he didn't touch it after that (not counting the soft free kicks in the first quarter).

See you clowns on Saturday.

Please, going to start another thread after Essendon lose or go missing when Essendon win?

typical hawks fans, always go missing.

Yeah lets bring in BOTH JJ and Campo and take another step backwards like we did last week with Bolton and Kepler.

No wonder we went 15 weeks without a win last year.

If Campo, Bolton and Kepler are all in the side along with JJ, Pev, Heff etc then Sheedy may aswell throw the towell in because he's finished.

After going along to watch the Hawks v Bulldogs yesterday we need to select run. Yesterday the Hawks kept pushing hard into space all day. They play two players loose across half back or the back end of the square to provide run. When the ball goes into the opposition forward line their midfielders take of into space out wide. It didnt work yesterday because the Bulldogs where equally as good in the run department and where more polished in their disposal so the Hawks out smarted themselves a bit by giving the Bulldogs too much space at times.Against lazy/slowish sides their style of play will be dangerous.
If we are not on our game and prepared to work we are going to get smashed.

I watched the Footscray-Hawthorn game fairly closely, and it was fairly evident that the area which Hawthorn got on top and have to address is at the clearances. They killed Footscray in that area, but seemed fairly limp everywhere else, hence they got rolled in a game they probably thought they could have won. Footscary had to do a lot of their attack from a kick behind most stoppages, generally the back and half back lines, an area in which we too have had to launch our forays forward from more times than we would like. Hawthorn do this well too.

I dont want to talk too early, as is typical of us someone like Cloke puts in a good game, but their KP forwards outside of Franklin didnt seem too worrying. Im not sure if Roughhead is at the level, and Dixon had a shocker - Im sure he wont kick that badly next week. At the other end, their backline KP was hardly solid, and many of Footscrays blind bombs into the forward line resulted in goals. Will Jacobs play next week? This was all against a Footscray team which really struggle with KP players. Like St Kilda, I think Hawthorn will play more players behind the ball in our forwardline and try to rebound that way. On paper they dont seem to have the obvious matchups, but football isnt played on paper.

Them losing Williams was a godsend for us, as we dont have an obvious matchup for him.

So, what does that mean? Like Collingwood (hingsight), we need to ease up on the KP players, and bolster the midfield, especially ball getters at the stoppages. If we can break even at stoppages we will win. Assuming Hille & Fletcher come up, there is no need for Bradley (obviously), Bolton or Johns.

Hopefully Winda comes up, but outside that, I think that perhaps one of JJ, Lonergan or Hilsop (suspended?) or to a lesser extent Houli will come in to help address the area in contested ball at the stoppages, as well as run obviously, an area in which we looked horribly flat against Collingwood.

Our two obvious choices for Buddy are Fletcher and Ryder. We have to pay him the utmost respect, as he is who they will go through and is most dangerous. He can be exposed defensively, which no doubt Sheedy will instruct Fletcher or Ryder to do when they can. On the rebound we have to be extremely careful tho.

In short, the clearances worry me, and we have to address this area with more grunt & run in the midfield. I can easily see, if fit, Hille, Winda, Welsh & JJ or Lonergan or Houli in for Bradley, Bolton, Johns and perhaps Dyson.

In : Houli
Out : I don't care.. just bring in Houli.

Surely must get a run in the seniors now. We are crying out for a player of his ilk. A midfielder with a good motor, skills and pace.

He might not be ready yet but I'll guarantee you he'll give us more value than Dyson and one or two others.

SAY YES TO HOULI 2007
JUST KEEP SAYING NO TO CAMPO 2007

Against lazy/slowish sides their style of play will be dangerous.
If we are not on our game and prepared to work we are going to get smashed.

Agree and we should be well aware of it after what happened in the first half of Hirds testimonial game against them last year.

Even bloody Dixon that night was ripping us in that half because of the silver service their midfield was serving to the forwards.

Our possible ins are:

JJ
Campo
Hille
Winderlich
NLM
Welsh
Houli
Hislop

Outs should be:
Bolton
Bradley
Dyson
Laycock/Johns

I reckon up to 4 changes should be made pending fitness-

Hille for Laycock
JJ for Bolton
Winderlich for Bradley
Welsh/NLM for Dyson

We deffinitely need to bring in another running player and drop a tall.
Hawks strength is their rebound out of defence, as they seem to play a loose man back there.
We must go long and direct. When our big forwards lead, they must hit the packs hard and bring opposition players to ground in the process.

Dont think NLM will come up. Was in the Mod group at training today and reports are he pulled up a bit sore after his last fitness test.
Hille is also pretty questionable at this stage.

We're 3-2 with both Peverill & Heff in the side....you honestly think JJ will make matters worse?

The side I would like to see take the field this weekend against the Whoreks are

B McVeigh Michael Fletcher
HB McPhee Ryder Lovett Murray
C Peverill Stanton Lovett
HF Monfries Lucas Hird
F Johns Lloyd Davey
Foll Hille JJohnson Winderlich
INT Heffernan Laycock Welsh Hislop
EMER Slattery MJohnson Watson

IN JJ, Hille, Winderlich, Welsh, NLM, Hislop
OUT MJ, Slattery, Watson, Bolton, Bradley Dyson

With this side he have enough height to worry the hawks and enough run with bench players who are all more tan capable of time in the midfield. Also need players like NLM and Hislop who are tough at the ball and wont flinch when it gets tough.

If anyone out at all either injured or suspended (Hislop) bring in slattery. Dont need more big men or height. Our backline has 5 that can play tall if needed and forward line has 4, that height can be moved around the ground if lose a tall.

Michael will take Roughhead so Fletcher can play his quarterback role from defence, he will be fine now as he has had 11 days and he is a tough character.

Llyod or Lucas will kick a bag as they were quiet on Anzac day and will provide a decoy for johns to move up the ground around half forward to be marking lead and drive the ball deep.

The most important thing this weekend is run and losing watson, bolton, bradley and dyson you lose nothing in that area.

Watson needs to go to bendigo for the week and not handball all weekend, just keep kicking the ball until he learns to hit targets.

We will not make 6 changes to a sde that is 3-2. NLM, Welsh and Hille are all a bit iffy for this week anyway. Changing a quarter of our team is ludacris.

Its not ludacris if there are 6 better and fit players to bring in, its not like old days where your senior side and reserves side have people they like playing with.

Making changes like this would put a lot of them on notice to lift and prove that sheedy is still prepared to face things front on. You are probable right with injuries and availibilities but the week will take a couple out of the 6. As long as Dyson, bradley and bolton are dropped for better players i will be happy.

haha yeah but can you remember who was playing on him for the better part of the night...???? Bolton... theres your reason

I understand where you're coming from but you can't make 6 unforced changes. That is a move of team in dire, desperate trouble and is going to the absolute extreme to win a game.

It's obvious the team balance isn't right and in my opinion, they only need to make 2, maybe 3 changes. The team is too topheavy, as has been stated a million times since ANZAC Day. So my outs would be Bradley, Bolton and Dyson. My ins would be Winderlich (if healthy), Welsh (if healthy and JJ. All three are ball winners.

In- jj,houli,hille and hislop
Out-johns,dyson
Out for ever-bolton and bradley

Does anyone think hirdy needs to miss a game? I no there will be a 9 day break between games but i think he should miss the hawthorn game also

i cant see sheedy making any more than 2 changes even tho i feel we need to make more than that...i can even see kepler getting another game after sheedy came out and defended him like he did.
i think:
In: Winders, Welsh
Out: Bolton, Dyson

i hope:
In: Winders, Welsh, Houli :thumbsu:
Out: Bolton, Dyson, Bradley

Nothing confirmed by the club officially but it looks like NLM is very doubtfull to play. Slattery is also in doubt with a minor hammy problem.
They are hopefull that Winderlich , Welsh and Hille will be ready. Of these 3 i would say that Winderlich and Welsh look good at this stage and Hille is still very much 50/50 (based on todays training).

We have to make sure we are hard at the ball against the Hawks. That's why I think we desperately need Welsh and NLM back in the team if they are fit. We should also keep Slats in the team if he is fit to play. Mitchell and Hodge need to be closed down at the stoppages. These two players carved up the Bulldogs. I think Heff should play on Mitchell and Pev should play on Hodge. We also need to win our own ball at stoppages so it would be ideal if JJ returned otherwise maybe Monfries could be played a bit more on ball.

Lol, he will be back for one week and hit someone and be out for 6 ;)

Probably, he plays his role well ;)

Brown says Hawks skipper set to return

http://www.thewest.com.au/aapstory.aspx?StoryName=377856

Hawthorn captain Richie Vandenberg will lead a trio of impressive returns for Hawthorn's AFL match next Saturday against arch-rival Essendon.

Hawks utility Campbell Brown said Vandenberg, Trent Croad and Joel Smith were likely starters for the MCG game, while Chance Bateman should also recover in time from the calf muscle injury he suffered during Sunday's loss to the Western Bulldogs.

Vandenberg is yet to play this regular season because of a hamstring injury.

"The game was definitely there to be won, and had we won yesterday we would have been in a fantastic position at 4-1," Brown said.

"It was a little bit frustrating the way we let the opportunities slip like that, but in saying that, all the stats ... were really good.

"We know that we get a few blokes back this week - Trent Croad, Richard Vandenberg, Joel Smith - a bit of experience in the side, maybe that will help.

"You always want your captain out there, he's definitely going to be right to play.

Brown added Bateman's absence from the field late in Sunday's game was more a precaution.

"He missed a couple with a calf and he's come back, there was nothing too much wrong with him, we just didn't want to risk him in that second half," he said.

"He felt a little bit of tightness, but I think he'll definitely be right for this week."

The Bulldogs ended Hawthorn's three-game winning streak with the 17-point win.

Brown said the loss was frustrating, but added there were some positive signs.

The Hawks matched and even beat the `Dogs in some statistics, but poor kicking for goal in particular proved costly.

Brown went forward in the last term and kicked a goal, a rare foray ahead of centre for the backman.

He had done well on Bulldogs captain Brad Johnson before the move.

Unlike many defenders, Brown said he preferred not to go forward.

"I'm the type of player who needs to be given a role - when I'm a given a role on a player, I just like to do my job," he said.

"I find it easier to get into the game that way (rather) than play forward, do my own thing and run around."

Brown also admitted he was keenly anticipating the clash with the Bombers.

The tough defender has had some notable physical clashes with Essendon opponents in the last few seasons.

"What's happened over the last few years has probably built that rivalry up even more.

"We've beaten them the last couple of times, so I'm sure they'll be looking forward to playing us and getting a win back.

"I know the Essendon club doctor (Bruce Reid) and Kevin Sheedy pretty well, so I like to lift for the Essendon game
."
