Changes v Hawks

The weakest player for us on the night was Luke McPharlin, by far. Pratt was decent for a first game - mistakes in defence are always more evident then ones made through the midfield or up forward.

As for Des - no way does he come back in the team unless he's dominating the WAFL. I'd be disgusted with Harvey if he just slotted him back in.

You would think Des would need at least 3 weeks in the WAFL considering how much football he's missed. Pratt made a basic "schoolboy error" turning back into traffic like that. His kicking looks a bit shallow and up and under in style. However there was plenty to like about other aspects of his game and I expect him to hold his place for Friday.

I am a bit worried about Pratt and the bigger Hawthorn bodies but he did his bit the other night and unless a player is really hopeless in their debut game (think Clayton Collard in his debut), you have to give them another go to settle into it. Broughton is the form player in the WAFL this week and it looks like Schammer is getting the arse from the MRP (Must Rape Purple) so I think the team has been decided if the Schammer farce sticks:

Out: Schammer (touched a carltank sissy)
In: Broughton (Suban or Hayden to midfield).

I was really looking forward to Foster pushing for selection but I think he was slightly injured (ankle/leg?) in his WAFL game so will have to wait another week at least. Schammer out will make this game very line ball for us I think (even with Hodge and Bateman out).

Pace and ruck is where we have to hammer home the advantage - losing Bateman and Hodge are big outs (as is Schammer for us).

I am wondering if they may bring Renouf in - similar to Hampson coming in last week - as they may be a little Sandi aware ...this is fine as it is one less running midfielder to rotate through.

I really would look at just making the enforced change and to be honest it is a very simple choice Broughton in - and look to get a little more midfield run from wherever you can.

Thornton must stay in - he is going OK and gives us some pretty good run at Subi.

Murphy - tall key forward, Hawks struggle down back ....I saw some good signs last week and if he kicks 2 goals a game - that ticks a box for me.

Clarke, Walters and Pearce need to keep building on that WAFL form.

I was at the game and Pratt worked his a*** off all night.

Working his ass off or not his deicision making was very slow which is a huge problem when your playing in defense. He could end up being a decent player but at this stage Broughton is a long way ahead of him IMO.

Out - Pratt (not up to AFL standard)

In - Broughton
Dumbest thing written here since Canberra Dockworker.

There is no way I want to see Headland back in the team until he's getting 30 touches in the WAFL and running out games. The chemistry the team is building is based on the hard work put in a bunch of first and second year players. They should be kept together and rewarded as they obviously want to play and to win (yeah f*k you Josh Carr, who's winning now, good riddance).
I would be really pissed if DeBoer or Hinkley for example was dropped to make way for Des. Hinkley improves with each outing and DeBoers attitude and attack on the footy is exemplary.

Broughton for Pratt makes sense. I agree that Pratt looked a little of the pace although you can't question his endeavour.
Yep. I would be ropeable if Des comes in in expense for one of the young guys. Even when he is fit. I would only bring him in for Soloman as they have as much future here as each other.

Disagree. Broughton is better now, but Pratt had a really promising first game.

Stood bravely in front of Fev, took a courageous mark, tackling was great and I thought his skills were generally good.

DO NOT confuse adapting to the pace of the game, and the standard of the player. You'll be just like one of those Hilly dissers first up this year.

Broughton is the obvious in... but I'm not sure who we have left in the team that can play a pure midfield role. I thought Peake adapted really well to Schammer's old role in the first half, and seemed to go out of the game. Not sure how much Hinkley and De Boer were put through there either. Both seemed to play a lot up forward.

So we might even see one of the smalls moved forward... and Hinkley and De Boer put in the middle... which would be interesting to see how they could work it.

Hasleby, Mundy, Pavlich, Ibbotson, Hill, Duffield, Suban, Peake, Solomon, Pratt, Hayden, Hinkley, Dodd and de Boer are all that's left in the current 22 capable of playing in the midfield - to varying effect. That means it absolutely has to be a midfielder who comes in. So as nice as it would be to see Clarke come in, that would only leave us with 14 players who can go into the middle. That's about the bare minimum - probably below it at Subi.

The best chance we have in this game will be by running the Hawks of their feet. Not suprisingly, if we don't have enough runners we won't be able to do that...

Out: Schammer (susp.)
In: Broughton

If Schammer survives the mystery wheel tonight then no change.

You say we need a midfielder in but bring in Broughton.

News flash - Broughton is definitely not a midfielder.

Is he a permanent midfielder? No, but Broughton is more than capable of playing a role through the midfield. Much like Dodd, Solomon, Mundy, Hayden, Pavlich etc are able to play in the midfield when/if needed. Unlike Clarke - several people have suggested him as the IN - who will just further weaken an already depleted midfield.

We've already lost Palmer and Crowley (probably Schamer as well) so it's extra running players we need, not bigs.

I've never seen him play midfield.

Broughton is the obvious inclusion, but I disagree with your reasoning behind it.

Just curios, is it just that you think Taz is suited to Roughead that you wouldn't put him on Buddy?

I would've thought Taz is the ideal match up for Buddy. Other than Dodd, he'd be the only one with the mobility to go with Buddy, but Dodd would get killed one on one - Taz wouldn't. McPharlane could do the job too, but I reckon they'll play him forward again to stretch the Hawks defense.

No, I think Taz would do a good job on both Buddy and Roughead, Just thought Elvis would be better suited to the more mobile, more unpredictable type forward, where as Taz seems to do well in the more physical contests, and the big spoils, and Roughstock seems to play a more traditional forward role. Six of one, half a dozen of the other i guess.
Just my thoughts.:)

Does Broughton have the closing speed to go with Williams or Cyril?

He could go with Williams, wouldn't trust him on Cyril. Maybe Ibbo would be a better match-up? He's probably our quickest and most agile mid, aside from Hill of course. He didn't shut down Judd completely but he certainly hurt him the other way.

I'm struggling a bit with all this love for Broughton. I thought he was just OK inthe game against Adelaide - nothing special, certainly not any better than Pratt. If we need another midfielder let's select a proper one(Des, Foster). This would probably be in place of Murphy. Hinkley stays for his aggression and pace. Solly probably earned a reprieve as he was OK on Saturday night. I really doubt there will be any changes though.

Broughton had 19 touches, was solid as a rock and comfortably beat his man. Looked like he'd been in the team for years. He was easily better than Pratt imo (not that Pratt was bad).

Agreed esti, Broughton had a very solid debut game and it's a pity he was injured, but he came back and collected 25 touches for Subi last week, and we should be rewarding excellent WAFL form.

Although I don't agree with it I have a feeling it will be Broughton in for Pratt, I'd like him in but who does he replace?

How far is Broughton away is he still injured

He had a metarsalectomy and a bilateral cross phenelofusion ....recovery times vary depending - estimates are currently 11.5 weeks.

Harvey is a supercoach though and if anyone is going to get Broughton back into our dream team it will be him.

Sorry, but it was actually a trilateral cross phenelofusion.
