BRISBANE rookie Jackson Paine has been elevated onto the senior list and will face Melbourne in Round 9.

It’s understood the Lions are in the process of lodging paperwork with the AFL that will see Paine replace Justin Clarke on the club’s senior list.

Clarke was forced to retire in March after suffering ongoing concussion symptoms.

Paine, 22, will play his first senior game since Round 23, 2014 against Melbourne this Sunday at the MCG.

The defender has notched 12 senior matches since debuting for Collingwood in the opening round of 2012.

The key position forward, who has found a niche in the backline over the last 18 months, was traded to Brisbane in the deal that saw Patrick Karnezis join the Magpies in late 2013.

After six senior games across two injury-ravaged seasons, Paine was delisted at the end of last year but given a lifeline with pick No. 2 in the 2016 rookie draft.

This season he appears to have overcome his shoulder and ankle issues, skippering Brisbane’s NEAFL outfit which is yet to win a game.

“He’s in really good form at the moment,” Lions reserves coach and 2000 Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin told the club website recently.

“He’s really consistent and leading the group well in what hasn’t been a great start to the year.”

I think the coaches might be keen to give the 3 tall forward set up another go?

Ins could include Freeman, Paine, Mathieson, Jansen and Robertson.

I am guessing Andrews isn't ready with Paine being promoted and coming in.

DBeams is obviously out. I think CBeams and Taylor will also go out. Hanley looked to be carrying a niggle so could be out. Rich, Bell, Bastinac and Green could all be on the chopping block. Freeman in for Walker could also be an option.

Is Paine seriously only 22 still?

It feels like he's been around forever, and spent time at the Pies before that!

Am actually stoked to see Paine Train get a game. Has been in very good form in the reserves and he is playing in a position that is a major need for us right now with our KPD stocks wearing thin. On top of that he is a terrific guy off field and a real character. He'll go out and give it his all and hopefully he plays well:thumbsu:

When I was in the rooms before indoor warm up with my son and a couple of his friends. Paine walked by and said hello to everybody, which I thought was such a small thing but meant a lot...well to me, my son said "who was that?".

This might sound a bit old school but do you think with your backs against the wall now is the time to blood some youngsters and tell them to go the knuckle? Line in the sand game..

and they all get suspended and we are even worse off? Plus if our youngsters were Browny and we had a few like Pike, White, Johnson and the Scott brothers yeah ok. But current crop no.

Two years with Pies, two years with us... does seem like he's an old hand though!
Might've been promoted on the back of his Locker Talk performances. Good on him!

Tim Watson quality coaching there. "Alright young fella, we're gonna give you your debut. I know you're going to be nervous, but I want you to go out there and start punching on. Good luck".

"BRISBANE rookie Jackson Paine has been elevated onto the senior list and will face Melbourne in Round 9".

Worth a try, but a week too late. Despite the easy and seemingly popular view espoused in Whiting's AFL piece "SWING THE AXE, LEPPA", the coaches and selectors must carry a fair bit of the blame for recent performances:

- knowing that McStay was unlikely to play last week and not including a covering tall/KPD (ie Paine) in the emergencies

- continually having players play outside of their positional strengths (Rich, Hanley, Mayes, Paparone, McStay, CBeams (he looked great as a mid in his early days, getting 20 - 30 touches and kicking goals, and hasn't been near the midfield since))

- agreeing to the "run and gun" half-a-game-plan, whether player-inspired on not. This is an absolute act of desperation and has taken opposition teams about two games to effectively work out and negate.

It seems that although everyone blames the midfield for the current level of performance (probably correctly), all the proposed changes seem to be directed towards the unfortunate small forwards (starved of possessions) and overworked backs.

I look forward to several changes this week, with those dropped having to fight back and show their mettle in a dysfunctional and poorly-performing reserves team like their replacements have had to.

As expected, Andrews confirmed out until Round 10 or 11.

Knew Paine would have to get a run with Clarke and now Andrews out. However I can see Hogan kicking 8 on him, something he doesnt really deserve :(

Alternately, he could keep Hogan to less than 3 goals and end up kicking off a massive career as an elite defender!

Surely Rog gets Hogan.

I'm taking the Lethal approach this week with the inclusions - it's never as good or as bad as you think. Paine and a few more will get an opportunity and who know's what we will discover. Paine has the chance to cement a spot on an AFL list - it's his last shot at it. I suspect he won't leave anything on the field. He might not be good enough - he might surprise us all. Let's see.
