Bassett let on what was expected of Jack. He said they wanted to see him attack the contest when they sent him back to the sanfl. To his credit he did just that but he has to do it consistently. Polec was given the same treatment and is a much better player for it.
Matthew Lloyd said as much on Footy Classified. Jack Watts has plenty of talent, was traded on the back of 15 possessions and 1 goal a game over the previous 3 years and is producing less this year. He's too good to be at that level but he has to really want it and not look back in 5 years and think he blew an AFL career by coasting.
We all want Jack to be the best he can be and he has to show that's what he wants too.

Even if true, and it might, it has nothing to do with Watts being dropped. The best way for learning how we play would be actually playing games.

I would like to see AJ come back in. His speed would be ideal to break lines Friday night and add to our pressure game. Who we leave out will depend on fitness and match ups...
I don’t want Hombsch dropped if Jonas is right to go. He has been very important when he’s played.

For those not happy with Watts not coming straight back into the side...
Look what happened to Polec and even recently SPP when they had a few extra weeks in the reserves...They are much better players for it and we’ve been crying out for our team to be harsh. It’s the best way for the players to respond and give themselves a reality check.

People are being harsh on Clurey. Has a bigger tank than Hombsch. I have them line-ball at the moment. Depending on the opponent you could use one or the other.
If the match up is Hogan... I'm going Clurey.

If Jonas is fit he plays. There is no question on that. I think that be the only change, provided DBJ is fit too.

I just wonder if Westhoff would be a good influence on this. He's Humphrey by name and Humphrey by nature. His running and courage at times is exemplary. No one would call Hoff soft anymore - but there were stages early when it seemed he was going to go that way. He's turned it around massively, and yet his personality and who he is would suggest it's hard for him to this - similar to Watts. I wonder what gets Westy up for the fight each week, as it wouldn't be natural to him imo.
Just keep him away from goalkicking mentoring, lol.
I got the feeling he was more talking about going when it's his turn and defending hard rather than game plan per se.

We now have that many supporters conditioned to accept mediocrity that that they cannot see that good sides have good players in reserve. Jack Watts is a good player at his top, he is no champion, but a good player none the less. If a good player like Watts burns it up in the SANFL that is no more than supporters of a well performed club should expect from a good player.
In a well performed club there are no gold passes so if we aspire to become a well performed club we should not be in the business of recalling a player with potential on the strength of one good game in a B grade competition. If Ken Hinkley says Watts has a bit to learn I will go with it, I just hope that the same standards apply to others on the list.

I wonder if Jack isn't just almost too nice a guy, so what you say is right. He really needs a bit of white line fever. I thought he attacked the contest hard for the Magpies and that's what the coaches want to see.
Another guy he reminds me of is Darren Smith. He was pilloried by opposition supporters (and more than a few Port supporters) because he didn't smash guys into the ground, but as John Cahill said he had great football courage. He would back into packs and contest from any situation. Great hands, endurance, mobility/agility (he could lead up the ground and turn on a 5c piece) and an accurate kick for goal.
Jack Watts has all those qualities.

Yeah I think Jack is almost too positive. Obviously this is some serious armchair psychology on my behalf but I get the impression that a loss or a mistake doesn’t burn in his guts the way it does for someone like a Travis Boak or Ollie Wines.
It probably helps his goalkicking. I get the impression when Trav or Ollie are lining up for their set shot they’re thinking to themselves “gee it’d be bloody terrible if I missed this”, which only increases the chances of them missing it. Jack probably goes back and slots the set shot while humming the sunshine and lollipops song to himself. But the flipside is it means maybe Boak or Wines will go into a contest harder than Watts would.
Players need to get the balance right between putting just the right amount of pressure on themselves. I think someone like Boak could stand to put a little less pressure on himself, whereas Watts could stand to put on a little more.

I'm thinking it'll be Jonas for Hombsch if Jonas is fit and Irra for DBJ if DBJ isn't fit. So anywhere between 0-2 changes is possible.
Hombsch has been better than Clurey this year.
Trengove is a massive downgrade on Ebert sorry but it's true
I can only see Trengove getting a shot if one of Wines, SPP & Rocky get injured and many would prefer Atley to come in.
Hombsch had a better DE (by 3%) but Clurey is averaging 75 more metres gained.

The biggest issue with Hombsch is how bad he is at getting around the ground. Offensively slow and provides zero rebound. Clurey is a bit better in that department, but Hombsch is probably better defensively. All in all Clurey is a more balanced player, but Hombsch would be the one i'd want "doing a job" on someone, if that was the deciding factor between having one or the other in the side.
