Do people think dropping Boak for say, Amon or Barry, think that we'll be a better side for it?

I mean you can argue he's out of form and that's one thing, but do you think dropping him will actually improve our team and give us a greater chance of winning?

His role is so important to our ball movement and forwardline and none of those guys can play it.

Not least because he's developed into quite a good wingback.

So many timely overlaps off the back of the square. One of those immeasurable qualities that players either have or they don't.
Saying this he does seem to be more effective off a wing/middle.

Definitely a transition in the making.

I’d argue there’s no good alternative to replace Boak and if Boak were to miss a game through injury, we’d be a weaker side for it.

I went to the game and then watched it again on TV especially after the boak bagging. He was good involved in everything and sure he made a few errors but he created and made a lot of our goals. If you think he was poor go watch the game again and look at the little things he does time and again.

We had two ins (Marshall and Thomas) coming off the same length break to play the Dogs, who like Melb were coming off the bye.

No reason Watts cant come in if his form (response) warrants it
My bet is Hinkley dropped him two weeks before the Dees game for a reason. Imagine if he had to drop him in the week leading up to the game. The media distractions and the effect on Watts would take all the focus. He would have to put in a blinder to be picked this week.

I was just about to post this, he played a lot better on TV than at the ground :).

And SPP must be wearing gloves as his hands have improved ridiculously.

We are now halfway through Boak's 4th year of terrible football. Admittedly he has played a handful of good and some great games in this period, but generally he has Ben poor.
I agree he is a great captain, which adds a lot to the team but at some point players need to be accountable for actions on the field.
Boak has now sepased Mark Taylor for the title of the captain with the longest free ride.

I don’t think Boak’s terrible, he’s just not elite (hasn’t been since 2014), and has possibly dropped outside our top 10, or getting close to it.

He’s still better in his role than Amon or Barry would be.

Would love for him to stop fumbling though and to kick the ball better.

He’ll play very good games yet for us this year.

Ebert concerns me more tbh, although he finished strongly on Thursday night.

My argument is more that if we dropped him we may see some improvement when we bought him back, rather than simply continuing as he is. Though i agree we dont have anyone to replace him. Maybe Atley or Barry.

I'm just disappointed that Boak has turned into an average footballer over the last few years. I expected so much more. Same with Ebert. Two of our prime players a few years ago are now hard to watch. Agree they both work really hard although Ebert has dropped off his workrate imo. Some of Boaks handpassing out of packs on Thursday was great but wow, he can stuff things up often. And then throw in Sam Gray and the frustration levels rise further.

I really want Atley to be given a chance this year and given the form of our midfield atm he needs to be tried as a flanker, forward or back. If we don't give him an opportunity I think he will leave. We need to know if he can make it. He has some qualities and is young. I don't want this to be another Aussie situation.

On re-watching the game.

Out: Marshall, Clurey
In: Watts, Jonas.

Marshall didn’t do much wrong, but Watts currently offers more, same for Clurey and Jonas.

I did the same and agree his game was better than I first thought but its still not good enough for a player of Boaks reputation.

I don’t think dropping Boak helps the side at all. We don’t have anyone ‘better’ to play that role. Nor would it be good for Boak. Malthouse recently spoke quite candidly about coaching and mentioned how challenging it was to drop senior players back to the VFL as they ‘lost’ the pace and AFL and really struggled to get back up to it.

I’d be keen to get AJ, Watts and Jonas back in.

For anyone who watched that ring around the rosie game between Sydney and Wet Toast would appreciate our players a lot more. Boak makes clangers, but not more than anybody else. He does seem to pick out the opposition with regularity, and again, that game on Fridsy night, that was happening monotonously. Much prefer him to take it on than be timid and perfect. I have been loving Sam Gray’s work for ages and I have no fxxxing idea why anybody would not have him in our first ten picked. There is no fxxxing way he would be remotely considered fringe. End of rant.

Good to see we have been able to find someone to go after for a pile on now Neade’s out.
A bit sad, isn’t it. Mind you at least we don’t have five or six whipping boy threads going Like our neighbours do.
Boak gives 100% and would be a bit frustrated with the effectiveness of his kicks.
Does anyone think he might be carrying an injury?

DBJ finished the game with 'hamstring awareness'.

HBF stocks could be dwindling if it turns into hamstring irritation.

Wonder if Irra could get a run?

Personally I don't rate Irra at all. Clumsy with ball in hand and occasionally runs like a headless chook. Decent defensively but I think he'd be exposed at AFL level. I don't see an obvious replacement though, so I see where you're coming from.

Because you read opinions you dont agree with.. Its half true. Not fully, but half.. if boak wasnt captian he would be in the first handful of names mentioned in the outs each week.. it isnt and shouldn't happen.. but several points about his game and the decline are very valid.

At least those sort of comments help you weed out who actually knows something about football and who has zero idea.

Would love to think AJ is in or thereabouts near our best 22 so would love him to come in if it works. Extreme speed, allegedly in the discussion as quickest in the league, and an absolute madman.

The way I see it, there's two reasons to drop a player - they either have a poor attitude/workrate or they can't get their hands on the ball. Considering that Boak has neither of these problems, I don't think dropping him will have any effect. If it's his skills that are the issue here then playing sanfl isnt going to improve that.
