We need to see who can stand up in the middle as our midfield is decimated. Van Berlo is not even a B grade mid, without being rude the first good thing Walsh did was remove him as Captain. It's hard to drop the Captain now he needs to be dropped. Apparently the fittest person in the team his work ethic is poor and he gets no where near enough ball.

Need to get more games into Kerridge and Lyons. Can't wait for Brad Crouch to get past his injuries he is going to be a gun.

Agree 100% with this, at the start of the year I thought he would've slowed down completely but he's still a great asset with another year or two after this.

He will be lucky to go around again. The stats just mentioned were all about clearance volumes, this is not our problem and hasn't been for ages. It's what happens after that which causes our pain. We don't generate the same quality attack from ours, which is where Thommo is a liability because he can't take on a tackler and often gives to someone under the same pressure as he is. He's also a key reason why our opposition are able to waltz away when they win under no pressure whatsoever. Then Thommo basically just jogs from stoppage to the next providing little else.

Also happened against Freo.
Also happened against Norf.

Pretty sure it also happened against Western Bulldogs.

It's a massive problem.
Yeah it is. Against West Coast we didn't read the oppositions tap ruck work. If Sauce is being beaten the reading is poor and maybe there's and extra player standing offensively. Sauce likes to place the ball at the drop for Thommo, we clear from in tight and slightly static. West Coast have their followers moving at pace and more outside where the taps we're going. We didn't counter it. We struggle as you said against those sides that have ruck dominance and need to have a plan to deal with it.

There is zero point in bringing in Lyons, he has been weighed, measured and found wanting, same as Martin. Good state league players only.

Kerridge continues to not meet standards, apparently. Not sure we'll see him any time soon.

Cheney will return if over his back injury and Henderson will push up to the wing. The only other potential in with any kind of SANFL form at all is Atkins.

Out: No idea

We struggle against sides with ruck dominance because we have a bad set up and no pace to speak of, the same reason why we struggle against ordinary sides that used work rate to bulldog the ball out to their runners, ie Brisbane and Carlton

I love thommo but his last 2 games against wc have been absolute shit. Youd think him and priddis would be ideal matchups. Needs a big showdown.

Thompson has been a huge part of us getting ripped to shreds at the start of games. He's also been a huge part of our recoveries in those games. What do you do?

I really don't want to see him in the middle in the first quarter at least.

We always start with Thommo in the guts and VB on the wing - that's 2/5 ground level mids who are slow as treacle and non-entities in the first quarter of games. We're gifting a fast start to the opposition.

I think you're underestimating at only 2/5

As slow as they are, they're both still faster than M. Crouch and Lyons, and CEY is faster but still not fast. Our only two express pace players also start with them, Danger in the middle and Smith on the wing, while quickish Betts usually does the CHB run through.

Henderson and Cheney back means Henderson can start the opposite wing, and he has some pace, but short of stealing Cameron out of the forward line and leaving us bereft of crumbers every restart, that's all there is. Bare cupboard for pace, in either set of 22 players.

Thommo is 4th in the entire AFL for highest average centre clearances. He's also 3rd in the AFL for average general clearances with the 4th highest disposal efficiency of the top ten clearance getters.

I'm not having a go at maxlily, but I'm mighty sick of the ignorance of this board at times, with the utter rubbish and ill-informed opinions about just how slow, bad and inefficient Thompson is and how he prevents our future players from getting experience yadda yadda yadda ****ing yadda.

Thank you. The end.

You watch the stats there Footy4ever.
I'll keep watching the footy. Thommo is a big reason why we are so slow out of the blocks.
Do you ever notice how many times Thommo's player runs away with the ball ? Or doesn't that show in the stats

Been away from the keyboard for the past week, had to watch the game on my phone... changes have to be made, unchanged just goes against what Walshy stood for with elite standards..

I can't believe people still think VB should get another game..time to stand up as a past captain of the club and all you can manage is squat....has to go...think he is finished as an AFL player, we can't keep carrying a guy who gets so little of the ball not in a key defensive spot.
My other whipping boy Wright has finally started to get his shite together so he is probably safe for another week..Dmac is in the gun...if he is playing up the ground now that Hendo is back then he would be close to getting the chop as well...
So
OUT
VB Dmac
IN
Cheney Atkins

Its not a major issue, as we're one of the top clearance winners in the comp, its just means if the opposition get a run on, they can often score 3-4 goals in the space of 4 minutes.

If it's regularly costing us 3-4 goals per match then I would consider it a major issue. 18 or 24 points is a substantial amount considering most scores don't exceed 100, so that amounts to about a quarter to a third of the opposition's total each game.

You got one thing right, but it took right until the end of the post.

Thommo as sub or as a forward until the game slows to his pace.

Can just about guarantee he'll be standing in Jacobs favoured tap to spot at the opening bounce against Port. We return to the safe option every time, hoping it will work like it has in the past. He was always going to need managing to get through the year on top of the ground. If hasn't happened, he has no zip and struggles enormously not just with the pace on the spread, but also the pace around the contest. He's of little value if Sauce isn't hitting it to his advantage.

Dropping to the sub is probably a bit extreme. I'd give him a genuine rest or play him in the forward line.

this is why we need yarran

If VB is not dropped we know Tredrea is full of shit suggesting he was dropped for the Geelong game.

WCE game was his worst for the year.

You're comparing the way Walsh wanted to go about it with the old settled system that existed prior to his arrival. I wouldn't put it past Noble and Campo to reverse the dropping of a seriously out of form, mediocre player on his last legs. Especially one nearing his 200th game. Walshy was implementing elite standards, we weren't there yet and that mantra sure as shit didn't exist in anyone still employed prior to his arrival.
