I am not sure we can make any changes this week barring injuries. To scruitinise anyone's performance under those circumstances is unfair imo. Don't get me wrong I am happy with some of the mentioned changes but think it's a week to give everyone a gold pass.

If the call to drop VB had already been made before the geelong game then I got no problem dropping him now.

Thommo was shocking but obviously unprecedented circumstances. Some perform (Danger), some don't.

But the clincher for me to give him another shot is his Showdown last year was fantastic…I'm hoping for another vintage display.
Thommo is a showdown specialist. Even when he's 90 and in a wheel chair his selection's a no-brainer.

Correct.
One of the commentators mentioned that we set up as if we would win the tap, and we weren't doing that so why aren't we setting up defensively was the question.
IMO this is why we were smashed. Different circumstances in the middle and our 1st and 3rd qtrs are a better indication of how things could have been.

Trade in anyone who can help stop us conceding the first three goals of each game. Don;t know about anyone else, but I'm at the point where I now assume the other team will get a good start against us.

Exactly. Watching the game I said to mates "relax we always start at 3-nil down". Too bad we didn't finish the job.

We're certainly rendering the Immunity Card rule obsolete

There is always a reason why we can't drop underperforming players.

I'm not dropping VB because he was terrible on the weekend (and he was), I'm dropping him because he's been terrible all year.

This has always been the issue whilst Campo has been our midfield coach, we set up well to win the stoppages, but if we lose the stoppage, the opposition generally can bring the ball out under relatively minimal pressure. The fact that our midfield is filled with slowish, see ball-get ball types is probably one of the main reasons we have trouble, with no genuine A-Grade outside mids. Essentially most of our guys get sucked into the contest, leaving no one on the outside to defend a lost stoppage.

Its not a major issue, as we're one of the top clearance winners in the comp, its just means if the opposition get a run on, they can often score 3-4 goals in the space of 4 minutes.

Was showing promising signs early considering his year out, but has steadily gone from average to bad to horrible over the course of the year. He doesn't even resemble an AFL quality footballer at the moment and him keeping performing SANFL players out of the team is why we've been so god dammed ordinary for so bloody long. Even on here, we find people still looking at reasons to keep him in the team. Whatever good he does off-field is made a mockery of as soon as he crosses the line at the moment. Give the poor bastard a chance to find some form in the 2's, it's embarrassing watching him out there. Thank Christ he's not the captain.

Oppostion teams just waltz out of the centre square every week.
And before you know it, we are 3-4 goals down.
This is were I feel Thommo is letting the team down, he just doesn't get the ball enough from the centre with the amount of time he spends in there. And if the oppostion get the ball, he cant catch them or put any defensive pressure on at all.
I hope Lyons gets a go soon, I think we would improve if he started in the middle, just give it a go

Thommo is 4th in the entire AFL for highest average centre clearances. He's also 3rd in the AFL for average general clearances with the 4th highest disposal efficiency of the top ten clearance getters.

I'm not having a go at maxlily, but I'm mighty sick of the ignorance of this board at times, with the utter rubbish and ill-informed opinions about just how slow, bad and inefficient Thompson is and how he prevents our future players from getting experience yadda yadda yadda ****ing yadda.

Thank you. The end.

Agree 100% with this, at the start of the year I thought he would've slowed down completely but he's still a great asset with another year or two after this.

I really hope people aren't continuing to believe the false dichotomy that experience equals short-term success.

Just because we are in the race for finals does NOT mean you don't drop very poorly performing senior players for promising rookies. Sure, the long game is most important but I also believe replacing VB, Wright, Mackay with Atkins, Lyons, Martin/Kerridge makes us a better side next week as well as next year!!

You have less options for the future if you don't continue to implement changes.

Really interested now that Sam Shaw has put together a few weeks of footy without snapping in half. Did not even have him on the radar at all.

Could we go with a back line rotation of Talia, Hartigan, Lever, Shaw, Cheney, Laird, Brown. Is there enough run/rebound there?

Henderson further up the field - wing or roaming half forward. Possibly in Wright's role, who then becomes sub.

Smith moves up into van Berlo's position.

Ins: Cheney, Shaw
Outs: van Berlo, Mackay

Wright sub, CEY on.

Not like for like changes but rather a bit of a shuffle.

No. Hartigan, Lever and Shaw are fighting for two spots

Talia must go to Schultz, Hartigan will need to go to Ryder (cant have the same think happen in round 5)

I think there will only be one change.
OUT: DMAC
IN: Martin or Lyons

I reckon Shaw and Lever will provide more rebound than Mackay and Brown combined :o

I like these changes. Lever takes the Hoff first up, Cheney plays off a man and becomes the extra man up in defence, Shaw plays the rebounding flanker role and swaps on to the Hoff if Lever is getting beaten.

Henderson upfield to the wing would be good, even if he is pushing back into defensive holes (which a wing needs to)…but I don't want him playing as a defender!

Re the back 7:

- Talia, Lever, Shaw as the talls (2 of which still provide great rebound). I'm not anti-Hartigan but these 3 are the best options.
- Cheney and ? as the mid sized players (Kelly was in but struggling to find the ball, short term maybe Smith as he prob needs a role again.) Not Mackay.
- Brown and Laird.
