There was a poster back in days ('Chops a must' I think it was) who reckons the club had Hase have surgery where some of his vertebra were fused together or something like that. Reckons it ruined any chance he ever had of getting properly fit. Anyone else remember this? Or remember Chops for that matter?

I remember both.
Don't know whether the fusion surgery is true but it's certainly an oft' repeated yarn.
Do know that Hase suffered a serious back injury very early.

Yeah - i would as well. I wonder how he would've gone under RTB??

Probably would have been sent to Peel at some point to get his skinfolds down.

Imagine a fitter, trimmer Hase - he might have even been as good as Blakely!

Port are rubbish, at full strength I think we would smash them. They have a team full of cameo players like that spud Westhoff who show up when they feel like it, lolworthy that Hamish Hartlett was a pick 4 as well.

Robbie Gray is a star though, may be a massive twat, but still a star

They've got enough quality players. They haven't quite clicked and a few have been up and down form wise too. It happens. However, if they to their potential, what they showed most of last week would be enough even, they are 5-6 goals better than us on our form.

Every game we've had these lapses where we just fall apart. Usually it's where we go missing in the contested ball and/or our defensive structures go to water. We do that again at some point during the game (and the pattern this year has shown we will), and Port are a team that can score. We'll go from competitive to 6 goals down in less than a quarter. Hopefully we can do better than that, but that would be what I expect.

This was one of the reasons I disliked mark harvey. He prematurely ended hases career as a 30 year old on 210 games. he easily could if gone 2-3 years and played 250 for us.

I dunno about that. I remember Hase looking pretty cooked by that stage.

He wasn't quite at Pav levels of professionalism in looking after his body.

I've tipped Port. I'm hoping we'll put in a good show and knock them off, but I don't want to get ahead of myself considering our last two opponents.

Best Freo player or best ever?
Hase had a ripper debut season but a few from other clubs would be right up there...

Best debut for Freo easily - he actually dominated the game, everyone was saying how good is this, we have a super star (rising star round 1 if I remember correctly).

Haselby ended up being a very clever player for Freo but in hindsight we all feel cheated because he was seriously good.

As for AFL, I haven't seen a better debut but there certainly may have been one.

Interesting comparison imo. Blakely has him in the mongrel department, Hase and Blakely both seriously good with their hands (this is were they look similar) but Haselby is way ahead as a contested mark and kick on goal at this stage (subject to change!!).

Haselby was one of those players were you can home from the footy and said well Hase had a quiet one and then read the stats and saw he had it 38 times (always the one getting the ball out).

Scott Cummings kicked 8 on debut. Seems to be some correlation between being pudgy and having a great debut.

Apparently Coleman kicked 12 on his VFL debut. You'd be pretty happy with that at any level.

Jokes aside - a fitter (lighter) Haselby might have decreased his back pain problem. A little bit more speed in the legs with his elite disposal.

Daniel Metropolis kicked 6 on debut and his first four kicks were all goals (I think that's right). Not sure where he fits in, but just saying.

FWIW, also think Hase was a bit ahead of Blakely at the same stage.

Some comparisons sure, but Hase had very nice skills in just about all areas from the get go. He kicked nicely, beautiful set shot, extremely good hands (both marking and one of the best distributors in close), very quick decision maker and was instantly at the pace required for AFL. Besides the burst speed that Blakely has, in most other areas Hase would have him covered at the same stage of things IMHO.

BTW, Blakely is exceptionally good too, but Hase was a half step above is how I see it.

First qtr is going to be interesting.

Port have lost 7 of 12 first quarters. (Won 5 first qtrs)
Freo have lost 6 of 12 first quarters. (Won 3 first qtrs, Drew 3 first qtrs)

If this is going to be a close contest the result might be decided by the team who is switched on from the beginning.
